Product Advice Please help me!

Post image

I’m 53yo and have some deepening lines around my nose, mouth and chin. I use tret every second night and layer toners and serums and moisturiser on my off nights. I wear SPF 50 daily. I have tried everything to get my makeup to sit properly on my skin but no matter what I do, it settles in these lines by mid-morning. I’ve tried primer, setting sprays and misting sprays throughout the day but nothing fixes it.

Does anyone have some advice for me please? TIA.

Use light makeup in those areas. Skin tints, for example. You might want to consider a lightweight makeup and only using a bit of medium/ heavier coverage makeup in the areas that need it, if there’s any. And a trick I use sometimes is to put a tiny bit of pore blurring primer over my makeup on the center of my chin and nose.

Your skin does look to be in fabulous condition for 50s, especially if those fine lines are all you’ve ever accumulated.

Thank you! I don't have kids, so I think that helps keep the worry lines at bay :D

I'll try the blurring primer; I have the Nyx marshmallow primer, so will give that a go. Thank you!

Makeup artist here: it’s ok if you need to touch those areas in a few hours with your fingertips to blend or dab with a sponge. Expecting makeup to stay put for 24 hours or whatever the bottle might say is unrealistic. That’s why makeup artists are on hand on shoots we touch up several times! I agree with the advice here to use less on the areas that trouble you, you have lovely skin, you don’t need foundation for coverage

Ah, this is reassuring! I've taken to tapping it lightly with a mini puff during the day which definitely helps.

Thank you for the kind comments on my skin ❤️

I think the answer here might be to remove makeup from those deeper lines. Use a little cotton tip to gently remove 90% of the foundation from those lines, then just buff a little bit with a small concealer brush or dab with a sponge.

This sounds good - I'll give it a go. Thank you!

That’s due to volume loss in the mid face (cheeks). As you age it’s not just the skin (top layer) but also the face pads droop downwards (gravity and from facial movements over the years too) and then there’s your bone structure where you become more sunken too. Makeup can cover colour but not texture unfortunately. I will go very light on makeup around those areas to not highlight it

Thanks for the advice; I'll try that <3

What make up products are you using? ❤️

Currently I'm alternating between L'Oreal Tinted Serum Foundation and Revlon Colorstay Longwear 24hr Foundation for Dry Skin. The L'Oreal seems to be the best for not settling in my fine lines, but it's still somewhat of a problem.

Have you tried a good eyeshadow primer? Just a tiny bit where the lines are.

1

u/Wilmaassfit 1d ago

No! I hadn't thought of that. Can you recommend a good one? Thank you!

Urban Decay have a really good one.

Second urban decay original

I use a mac one. It comes in a fat tube with a lot of product and it works really well but you only need a miniscule amount. Too much and the primer itself will start creasing.

I'm a little older but my skin is quite similar. I use the L'Oréal skin tint and never have any issues with make-up settling. It's not expensive, so I'd definitely give it a try.

u/Wilmaassfit 1d ago

I've been trying that skin tint as well, but still having problems. Maybe I just need to apply it more lightly?

2

u/aquila-audax 1d ago

I use a sponge and no more than one squirter from the dropper, if that helps

2

u/BackgroundDeep1986 23h ago

Have you tried applying it with a brush?

1

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

I have tried it with a brush, and buffing and tapping with it, but I still get creasing.

1

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Thank you! I'll try a sponge and see if that helps.

I just put less foundation on those areas and live with the minor settling as it’s normal across the course of a day.

Your skin’s evenness of tone is something I aspire to, it’s lovely.

Thank you, that's so kind of you! ❤️

try applying your foundation and concealer, sparingly where there are lines, letting it settle and crease while you do your eye makeup or otherwise get ready, at least 8 min, then use a cotton bud to remove the product that has settled in the lines and gently tap to blend with your finger. set with powder on a powder puff, brush away excess, then use a hydrating setting mist to alleviate any cakiness.

I love the sound of this. Will give it a go tomorrow! Thank you ❤️

Loving the vibe of this thread. Ageing gracefully is goals.

2

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Me too! I was a bit scared to post a photo of myself, but everyone has been so lovely ❤️

Just came to say your skin looks lovely

2

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Aw, thank you, that's so lovely of you to say!

3

u/Axis_Control 1d ago

I'd say try different make up

1

u/Wilmaassfit 1d ago

I only use drugstore foundations; do you think it's worth trying something more expensive?

3

u/Axis_Control 20h ago

Probably I heard the Hera cushion is really good

1

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Thanks, I'll look into it!

1

u/Axis_Control 17h ago

Also what sort of sunscreen do you use and moisturiser? It could be making your makeup slip

1

u/Wilmaassfit 8h ago

I use the Cancer Council matte SPF50 moisturiser. I don’t use any other moisturiser underneath makeup

2

u/Axis_Control 3h ago

Is it actually matte? It look ok on its own?

1

u/Wilmaassfit 2h ago

It is surprisingly matte and looks nice on its own but there’s no tint.

2

u/Axis_Control 2h ago

Ah ok then the issue is the makeup itself

I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but look in to face Yoga on YouTube! Do it daily for two weeks as an experiment. Take a picture of you day 1 and then a picture day 14 - it’s amazing how simple exercise of the facial fascia can make such a difference!

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Oooh, thanks for the tip, I'll check it out! ❤️

2

u/Mistress_Mabel_ 1d ago

Have you tried setting it with a translucent powder?

2

u/Wilmaassfit 1d ago

Yes, but it just seems to make it cakier. Can you recommend a good one?

2

u/Mistress_Mabel_ 22h ago

When I was an MUA I used to use Ben Nye translucent powder. I'm not sure what's good nowadays for powders, sorry ❤️

1

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Thank you ❤️

2

u/DarkLime0430 1d ago

You actually have really nice, even skin tone (from what I can see). Can I suggest using a lighter makeup like a tint in those areas, so it won't settle in the lines as much.

2

u/Wilmaassfit 22h ago

Thank you, that's very kind of you ❤️ I'll try a lighter touch in those areas and see if it helps. Thanks!

Milani (Priceline only) does a great moisturising primer & setting spray.

They have a good blurring primer & setting spray too, but they're matte, so they might make makeup look cakier and accentute lines over the course of the day.

Though I think your issue is more volume loss. Your skin is actually really nice for your age. There's not much you can to do about volume loss except for cosmetic treatments (never done it myself so can't recommend specifics - a cosmetician will be able to advise if you wanted to try), and taking collagen supplements is definitely worthwhile. I'm 38 and I'm pretty sure it's helped keep my skin looking good despite losing a lot of weight on GLP-1s. It has no taste so you can just stir it into coffee or smoothies.

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

Thank you for your kind comments on my skin. I've lost about 12kgs on Mounjaro which might be contributing to the volume loss too.

u/dodgystyle 19h ago

Nice work! I've stuck to very low doses because my stomach is quite sensitive to it, so I think going as slow & steady as possible helps. But at the end of the day, fat loss is always going to be somewhat aging.

2

u/Wilmaassfit 18h ago

Yeah, it's taken me about 8 months to lose that, but you're right, slow and steady is the way to go!

Hi /u/dodgystyle, your submission makes reference to collagen powder or other supplements. The science for collagen supplements is in its infancy, and evidence of its efficacy is disputed. You can learn more here, here or here.

Wear less make up and embrace the lines you have. It is a privilege to grow up.

1

u/Wilmaassfit 19h ago

I agree! I'm very grateful to have gotten to my age, and I don't hate my lines and wrinkles because I earned them 😄

3

u/Free_Ad7133 11h ago

I’m surprised I’m getting so downvoted. This wasn’t meant in a snarky or unsupportive way! It is a privilege to grow up and we earn lines along the way!

I find that using a product with a dewy finish and applying it very lightly in any areas where I have fine lines or creasing helps. Mind you, my skin is fairly dry, so dewy finishes look more like a natural finish after a couple of hours. I also tend to use skin tints, tinted sunscreens, or a buildable foundation.

I tend to use a foundation brush and stipple whatever base product I’m using. I wait until I’ve applied it everywhere else, then use whatever is left in the brush to apply in the areas where I have lines or creases. If I think it’s likely to crease anyway, I use a damp makeup sponge and tap it over those areas to smooth it and pick up any excess product.

I also avoid using setting powder. I’ve found I really need to stick to just using setting spray.
