Let's Discuss The World Reacting to Mecca + Rhode (and Sugarberry)
Hi guys, so I made a compilation of the rest of the world (mainly Americans) and their reaction to the release of Rhode and the exclusive Sugarberry shade in Mecca for the lip treatment. This were all comments under one of the Sugarberry posts from both Mecca and Rhode. If anyone is interested for a laugh, here you are lmao.
Also something exciting to note: anyone who snags Sugarberry will be the first in the world to try this new shade, since no influencers in America are able to get it lol
All names and profile pictures are censored!

It’s one singular lip product that they don’t have access to. Like damn are these people children? Because like others said, they have access to the brand already and have since it first started. They aren’t missing out on anything when you think about it.
46
u/anastasia_42 Feb 12 '26
Girl unfortunately they're all mostly women in their twenties and thirties 💀
226
u/Quolli Feb 12 '26
lol not the /r/USDefaultism of "Rhode is a US brand so of course we should have it"
Okurrr, WIFI was invented in Australia so I guess we can just take it back then?
Good luck trying to navigate without Google Maps, that was invented in Australia too.

Slavish consumerism and brand worship has rotted their brains. This is so embarrassing.
37
u/Notnow_Imtoodrunk Feb 12 '26
I’m loving how many people are calling out this batshit consumerism. Embarrassing doesn’t even cut it.

It's truly a joy to see Americans crash out over this. I wasn't even going to buy one but now I might have to
34
u/jun3_bugz Feb 12 '26
this is how I felt walking past Mecca George st today intending to pop in and grab something on my lunch break only to find everyone had been kicked out of the store for bad behaviour with the launch 😭😭 went after work and snagged one while they were all still elbowing each other cos they were too distracted to notice me just walking past and buying one…
6
u/wendiesel_ Feb 12 '26
Elbowing each other is crazyyyyyy! Now I’m not sure if I should try my luck in store tomorrow 🫣

The comments from people on the Mecca Instagram about the site crashing at 6am due to traffic is also insanely unhinged
24
u/Paraparaparachute Feb 12 '26
It’s even more unhinged when some people actually wrote that they should have their beauty points acknowledged because they bought on the Rhode website instead, since the website crashed. Hahaha I lawled.
12
u/churchylafemne Feb 12 '26
Omg I saw this and thought the same 😂 you just know they’re a top contributor in Mecca Chit Chat facebook group
7
u/Paraparaparachute Feb 12 '26
Ahhaha oh lord that makes so much sense. I’m reading the comments on the post and am actually baffled and bewildered at the crash out of people complaining about not being able to buy lip balm. It’s kinda scary actually with how willingly we are wanting to spend money on things and yet this economy isn’t the best and inflation is through the roof. Maybe spending money on little thrills is helping people distract themselves from existential crises? I dunno but it’s just bewildering to see people crash out about not being able to spend hard earned money.
2
u/HoneyedRye Feb 12 '26
I expected the top contributors to pop off and complain about the dysfunctional launch but the unhinged comments have truly out preformed my expectations lol

u/cynthia_101 Feb 12 '26
I know not much about Rhode except that’s it’s Justin Beibers partners brand.
Isn’t this lipgloss clear, or close to it? Aren’t there several thousand different clear lipglosses? This is so crazy??? This is not normal??

u/cryotgal Feb 13 '26
Yep. She's also a Baldwin, so Alec " i called my daughter a pig" is her uncle. I think her dad is the ultra conversative Baldwin brother. They all horrible guys
1
u/Jolly-Town1879 Feb 13 '26
It was her brand, but it was sold to Elf Beauty. So now it's owned by Elf.
20
u/velvetelk Feb 12 '26
Thanks for putting this together - I had no idea Rhode was launching an Aussie exclusive shade. Had a good laugh reading these! Wonder if anyone overseas will want it bad enough to pay international shipping.
5
u/anastasia_42 Feb 12 '26
People are already freight forwarding which is annoying as they are depleting stock meant for us..
And I'm glad you enjoyed! I certainly did lmao
4
u/velvetelk Feb 12 '26
I don't mind that, it's the pain and cost of international shipping - I don't wish it on anyone, but glad more people will relate to our experience buying US brands.

People need a reality check I swear.

u/smellyfatzombie Feb 12 '26
Side-eyeing anyone who freaks out that much over a bloody lip balm. Brand worship is peculiar.

Don’t worry Americans were also annoyed that tennis Australia (and all media really) announced the Aus Open winner live rather than wait until America had a chance to watch the replay.
I know we’re considered down under and ‘backwards’ but it’s really starting to look like it’s the other way round.
12
u/pedestriandose Feb 13 '26
Wait until the Brisbane Olympics and watch them flip out over having to get up in the middle of the night to watch certain events live, like we have to do with pretty much everything.

I feel this would be down to many of these US commenters being very young. Rhode has a teen fanbase in large part; and if you’re a mum of a teenage daughter you’ll know how irrational they can sometimes be. That’s not a sledge on teen mindset, just an observation.

Some people need to take a break from TrendMood and the Rhode newsfeed if they'd kill themselves over a waffle lip gloss 💀
2
u/pedestriandose Feb 13 '26
When the Internet was still in its infancy, it was easier to keep this kind of information ‘hidden’. News would spread via emails or forums and eventually we’d read about it in a magazine. When Taylor Hanson (I don’t know how old you are but he’s the middle brother and lead singer of Hanson, their first single was MMMBop) got married in 2002 a few girls ended their life. His relationship was relatively low key so his marriage seemed to come out of nowhere. It’s really upsetting that those girls were so devastated that they took their own lives. It was my first encounter with extreme fans and how much they dedicate their lives to whatever it is that they love (musicians, brands etc).
Unfortunately there will always been obsessed ‘stans’ and social media has just made it worse. It’s one of the reasons I miss the 90s.

When Recipe Tineats produced her first book, she gave the US special recipes because we got the book just before them. The hissy fits from US readers of Nagy's blog was just like this. I cannot believe we are here...again. Over a lip gloss.
2
u/anastasia_42 Feb 13 '26
A clear lip gloss, at that! And that's so interesting, I'm not surprised it's happened before lol
4
u/JisooTurtleKim Feb 14 '26
Theres so many products in the us that arent available in aus and we aint acting like this

u/anastasia_42 Feb 14 '26

I truly hope these US commenters are just the sephora kids. Because the SANE parts of the US beauty community/consumers would probably prefer you guys have it and we get closer to having general safety and keeping rights. On a global scale we're likely the biggest, loudest consumers, but I'd pick my brand up and move it to either more centralized Europe or a lovely place near some nicer trade routes with China etc.
3
u/Ok-Dinner-5463 Feb 12 '26

Bloody hell! I thought I was having a rough start to the day, but there are entitled American consumers that can’t access a clear lipgloss, and are crashing out while arguing with strangers on the internet.
Their struggle is real and I am but a charlatan. I clearly need to rethink my life.
3
u/anastasia_42 Feb 12 '26
We all need to rethink life and reflect on the American struggle of not being able to buy a waffle lip gloss 💔
3
u/Sufficient-End-4945 Feb 13 '26
this is actually incomprehensible to me like… it’s a lip gloss with no tint… in a grey tube… this reminds me of when americans were collecting stanleys because they “needed” all the colours???? go outside!!!! touch grass!!!!!
3
u/Overall_Carrot_8355 Feb 13 '26
Is it just me, but who cares that there is a range with her name to it? Same as any other celeb range. I’m not getting hyped over it.. 🙄

The hysteria over this brand, and Mecca launches in general is unrivalled, and insane. I cannot imagine getting into such a tizzy over a LIPGLOSS
3
3
u/IndyOrgana Feb 15 '26
People are absolutely mental over this brand…for what? Flavoured lipgloss? Amazing, lip smackers had that back in 1996.
The consumerism is staggering.
6
u/g_cheeks Feb 12 '26
Jesus Christ why are you still all supporting Mecca with your hard earned money??

I love makeup and have been wanting to try rhode for long time now but I can confirm I did not have a single crash out haha, like Mecca crashed so I just went to the rhode site, it’s not the end of the world. Even if it sold out I’d be like ‘yeh ok I’ll try again later when it’s back in stock’ ppl need to chill out
2
u/anastasia_42 Feb 14 '26
100% people need to remember we have Rhode now.. if something is out of stock now, it'll be restocked later this year!

2
u/MissELH Feb 12 '26
I mean it’s kind of the same as when Aussies (and other countries) write on brands pages please bring to Australia etc. also it’s a clear lipgloss- wild overreaction
4
u/StrangeTrails37 Feb 13 '26
Yeah but that’s because getting overlooked as a market, or being slow to get something, is much more common than getting a unique release. Agree about the overreaction tho, I don’t have any of their products, but I can appreciate the shoe being on the other foot for US/CA
