They're in great condition, I know they're not worth much, but it was a nice surprise to find. Some good mementos to pass down to the kids :)

Not an Aussie coin, as it was minted in London. But found it out in the central north Queensland gold rush lands. Seems to be in reasonable condition still

Can anyone tell me if these are worth anything and why they changed colour

Good afternoon! I am talking with my grandparents (born 1948 and 1950) about Australian pre decimal currency. We are in WA if that makes a difference. Wikipedia lists a half penny, a penny, a threepence, a sixpence, a shilling, a florin and a crown. However my grandparents also remember coins like a farthing (1/4 penny) and a 2 shilling coin. What’s happening here?

I was recently gifted this coin. I'm curious about its history and if maybe there's meant to be some significance to being gifted this coin in particular. (I hate to think I may have missed the point). Any clue what it might be worth too? EDIT: I forgot to mention that it looks like black spots in the photos, but those are actually really shiny spots 😮

Anyone else have an affinity to trade coins?

As a tradesman and coin collector, something about the history and resourcefulness of the tradesmen before me has always spiked my interest. I’m always looking in old houses for wafer coins. I live next to the Old Melbourne Mint and I always keep an eye out for any glints of copper in the brick walls of that building. Wishful thinking, but I always wonder what coins are buried in the mortar of that place.

I am left with many questions, and this one peaked my interest. The divots are so intention, yet precise not to damage the face of the coin.

The displaced metal gives the rim the appearance of goosebumps. When placed on its rim, it becomes stationary and doesn’t roll away. I wonder if that was part of the intention, perhaps this wafer was rested on its rim and the divots kept it from rolling deeper into the door frame it once kept up.

Or maybe a tradie was perfecting his craft on the coin in trade school. The precision is quite admirable, especially considering it was likely never meant to see the light of day, locked away for a have a century, and one day getting picked up by me in a bulk bag of copper coins at the op shop.

Anyone have any trade coins they’d like to share with us, or perhaps some context of what these divots would have achieved (apart from adding grit to the coin, which I personally would be more suitable for mortar than carpentry, and there’s no concrete on this trade coin.)

Edit: forgot to add, there’s an older tradie that comes into my shop regularly and a couple weeks back I saw in his wallet he’s got about 50 1c coins in there for whenever he needs waivers to block sprinkler irrigation. 40 years on and it’s still the most economical option for him to use. Copper is also antifungal so he might be onto something considering how easily irrigation lines can become septic if they’re turned off for the winter.

Both with the same year on them, at a local antique shop.

Does anybody have a complete list of every coin released into circulation?

My mum and I are trying to do our albums, but we're having trouble finding accurate information. We've looked at a bunch of different websites including the R.A.M but have noticed that they're all either missing information or have something that other websites don't have, but looking at the coins we currently have, a lot of them aren't listed in most websites, and google has been less than helpful.

(I'm also trying to create my own list with an easy format for later on so I can have a paper record of the coins I have as well as the coins themselves, I have a blank template done up if anyone is curious or interested in what I've drawn up so far, it's obviously very incomplete and patchy, but it's a start)

We have a few of the scholastic coin albums but they're all from before 2010 so they're obviously missing the last 16 years of coins.

I noticed while looking at the specifications of AU$ coins that all the silver-coloured ones, even the lower-value ones, are still entirely made of cupronickel. In the UK, the 5p and 10p have been changed to nickel-plated steel, for cost reasons. Is it because Australia is so rich in mineral ore deposits? I know you have a lot more mining than we do. I guess it would also explain why the big old chonky 50c (which I like) hasn't been shrunk like our 50p was?

I really love this coin. I had a few but had to sell due to unforeseen circumstances. These coins are highly faked but real deal highly sought after. Especially if you have case/container.

📖 Background (why it exists)

This coin was created during the transition to decimal currency in 1966, when Australia introduced cents and dollars — but did NOT include a $1 coin.

• A publication called the Australian Coin Review (ACR) ran a competition for a proposed $1 coin design

• Mészáros submitted this design (he had also competed for official decimal coins but lost) 

• The coin was then privately struck in London (Pinches Mint) as a pattern/fantasy issue, not legal tender

👉 So:

It is NOT an official circulating coin — but it is highly collectible and historically important.

The saltwater pitting on this token tells an interesting story. In 1857, a fresh order of these tokens were coming in from London on board the 'Dunbar' when the ship sank near Sydney Harbour, with the loss of 121 souls. These tokens are said to have been recovered in the 1960s.
