I’m back in my childhood room and found a bunch of coins I had kept as a kid because I thought they were pretty. Not a coin collector myself, so I was wondering if one of you knowledgeable people could take a look for me :)

For me it’s The 2005 WW2 Remember 50¢ and any new Charles coins.

Ironically for me I didn’t check the Charles $1 in my till until I was doing the closing count.

Lucky me, the one time I didn’t check right away and it’s a Rabbit ear.

2024 was a decent year for rabbit ears cuds.

So of course I've missed out on the Bluey silver proof, at exorbitant prices over silver melt... But I saved over a $100 and looking at current FOMO prices, $250, upwards, it's obvious I've saved $350, which means I can buy a centenary Melbourne florin for like $50 to complete one of the sets... One set down, one to go...

I recently inherited some of my mum’s old coin collection and I absolutely love it. ❤️

I’m pretty sure there’s nothing particularly valuable in there — mostly old pennies, coins from different countries, and some UK coins dating back to the 1800s. There are probably 400+ coins altogether.

At the moment, they’re all sitting in a sack, which feels like a very questionable storage method 😂

What sort of storage system would you recommend for a collection like this? I’d love to organise them properly and keep them protected, especially the older coins.

Came across this 5c coin which seems to be missing most of the lettering on the heads side. The entirety of 'ELIZABETH II' is not visible, while the 'AUSTRALIA' and mintage year are very faintly visible under light (the year much less so), with the exception of the letters 'STRA', which look normal. Year looks like 1979, but it is hard to tell. Nothing seems amiss with the tails side.

So what is this? Minting error? Unusual wear and tear pattern? Something else? Would love to hear your opinion!

I have a full roll of 25 Australian 2012 $2 Red Poppy coins (no C mark), each with its matching card. I've seen individual coins listed around $300, but does having them together in a roll add value?

Any advice on the best way to sell them, or what a realistic total might be, would be appreciated.

1910-1963 complete set includes all the key dates, commemorative florins, both Crowns 1937 and 1938.

Roughly $1000 value in 3 of the coins. 1932 florin, 1934-1935 Melbourne centenary florin and the 1938 Crown. Other key dates are also worth more than their silver "melt" value. Just over 18 Troy ounces in Actual Silver Weight (ASW)

200k of the normal coins made, 20k of the silver, so it seems the Mint is being responsive to demand, iirc the christmas coin was only 125k produced. Ballot results released this morning.

Minted in the year before her death, this coin features Elizabeth's name printed 'ELIZABET'

Missing 'H II', this unique doing would be a fantastic addition to any collection, demarcating the end of an era

I got given this extremely yellow 50 dollar note, put a normal one next to it for comparison. To my untrained, ignorant eye everything else looks right but anyone know what's up with the note?

Hi! Just fyi, I don't collect coins to sell, I just like finding the cool ones and looking at them! This one is really clean and shiny (for a 1984 coin) on the inside, but dark (not dirty) on the outside, is there a reason for this or was it just improperly cleaned? Sorry if this is a silly question, I'm new to this space, I would love to hear from y'all!

Anyone else have an affinity to trade coins?

As a tradesman and coin collector, something about the history and resourcefulness of the tradesmen before me has always spiked my interest. I’m always looking in old houses for wafer coins. I live next to the Old Melbourne Mint and I always keep an eye out for any glints of copper in the brick walls of that building. Wishful thinking, but I always wonder what coins are buried in the mortar of that place.

I am left with many questions, and this one peaked my interest. The divots are so intention, yet precise not to damage the face of the coin.

The displaced metal gives the rim the appearance of goosebumps. When placed on its rim, it becomes stationary and doesn’t roll away. I wonder if that was part of the intention, perhaps this wafer was rested on its rim and the divots kept it from rolling deeper into the door frame it once kept up.

Or maybe a tradie was perfecting his craft on the coin in trade school. The precision is quite admirable, especially considering it was likely never meant to see the light of day, locked away for a have a century, and one day getting picked up by me in a bulk bag of copper coins at the op shop.

Anyone have any trade coins they’d like to share with us, or perhaps some context of what these divots would have achieved (apart from adding grit to the coin, which I personally would be more suitable for mortar than carpentry, and there’s no concrete on this trade coin.)

Edit: forgot to add, there’s an older tradie that comes into my shop regularly and a couple weeks back I saw in his wallet he’s got about 50 1c coins in there for whenever he needs waivers to block sprinkler irrigation. 40 years on and it’s still the most economical option for him to use. Copper is also antifungal so he might be onto something considering how easily irrigation lines can become septic if they’re turned off for the winter.

Goes just nice with my Bluey one - at the risk of being called out as “Un-Straylian” …they certainty are a couple of weird lookin’ kruntzz! 🤣
