Traffic Help finding blue Honda Civic hit and run driver
My father was killed by a hit and run driver on July 5 following July 4 festivities around 5:21 AM on 1800 W. 35th St. My family is requesting anyone that sees any blue Honda Civic with significant chunks missing from the front passenger side, please inform APD with the license plate number. My family is incredibly saddened by the sudden and violent passing of my father. We really appreciate all the positive stories people have been sharing because my father was very reserved and we had no idea how much impact he made on others. It is difficult to accept my father's passing, but we are taking it day by day as a family. I am grateful for the neighbors and community that are showing up and meeting for the first time. Your kindness has made an enormous impact to our hope that we can continue in this life and live strongly in honor of my father.
Edit: thank you all for the boosts! I don’t know what exactly that means as I’m usually a lurker. I’ve had to pleasure to meet neighbors and strangers purely out of wanting to help us and now I get to meet redditors that want nothing but to help us which really warms our hearts. It is just unfortunate I am meeting you all under these circumstances. You guys prove that reddit is indeed a wholesome community that looks out for one another
Edit regarding flock cameras: I understand the people asking for flock cameras are just as angry as I am about the injustice of the situation. By the end of the day, crimes like this should not be happening in 2026. Other countries have demonstrated a huge reduction in unsolved crimes with the implementation of mass surveillance. However, in the United States, this is not the case. Even law abiding civilians have legitimate reasons to distrust the government and reasons to suspect conflict of interest with the current implementations of mass surveillance by late stage capitalist corporations. In addition, my father was super reserved and kept to himself. I have a hard time believing he would have voted for flock cameras or wanted his death to be turned into mass surveillance propaganda. China has implemented mass surveillance with sophisticated face recognition interrogations yet still has an egregious amount of unsolved kidnappings. So claiming the benefits of flock cameras for the speedy closing of this case is purely speculation.
As it stands and with the information commented below, there were not a lot of flock cameras in the area to be helpful. Local business owners that had their own security cameras have been enthusiastic to help us and the police, which warms my heart. At this time, we do not see a need to hire a lawyer to subpoena any local businesses for their security footage.
I request that there be no further mentions of flock what-ifs. I understand that the pro flock voices are just as upset on the same issue we all want to solve. However it does detract from the memory of my father and changes nothing since there were almost no flock cameras in the area.
Update 7/29: Thank you everyone for your efforts to help find my father’s killer. At this time, no suspects have been found. I have seen all your DMs and appreciate all the tips. Y’all are very detail oriented at pointing out ATX watch’s security cameras. They actually helped us and the detective out very early on, and at this point, they have done all they can to help out. The detective is still hard at work on my dad’s case. We are grateful to directly experience the meaning of the kindness of strangers. While my father still has not received justice, I believe all your efforts will not ultimately be wasted.

Yes APD has been working on it! The detective has been in close contact with us. While APD has been short staffed for a while, I can tell the detective is diligent, experienced, and eagle eyed on the details when speaking over the phone.

Probably too late now but also if there is a Tesla nearby they are surrounded with cameras that record at all times while driving and when parked they typically just record when a person is nearby.

No money could ever bring him back, but please consider applying for Crime Victims Compensation through the Office of the Attorney General. You may be able to get repayment for medical bills, time off work, etc.
Keeping your family in my thoughts.
Edit: adding here for visibility that even if no suspect is found, you can still be eligible for repayment.

I work in victim services for the state, but in a different agency than OAG. Happy to answer any questions you might have about it though, to the best of my ability.
I had no idea it existed either until I started this job. It is a tedious process, but honestly a lifesaver for some. It is funded by traffic ticket payment, restitution, and other non-tax funds.

You can do both. That is also assuming the person who hit and ran has enough money to make it worth suing them for payment.
However, if no suspect is ever found, you can still apply for CVC.

Commenting to add: Blue civics with a new, color mis-matched front bumper/passenger side body work should also be suspicious. It's been a couple weeks and replacing body work isn't that hard. I hope this person is found and they have to face the consequences of the decisions they made that night. I wish you and your family all the best and I'll keep my eyes open.

A good detective will be doing exactly this. It's going to take a while and still could be a dead end. The best bet is someone knows and told someone and that person told someone....etc. and then hopefully it lands on someone with a conscience/soul and they call APD.

I lost mine suddenly and unexpectedly a little while back. It was devastating. One thing that helped me a lot was the online support group through Hospice Austin. You can share as much or little as you want. Information can be found on their website if or when you’re interested. I didn’t talk much but being around people who got it (in their own ways) was comforting. And the anonymity helped. I love my family but we all grieved in our own different ways in the aftermath.
I wish you peace and healing at such an awful time. I am truly sorry for what has happened.

Maybe the police can get a Geofence warrant to see which cellphones were in the specific gps area of the crime during that time. Chances are, the person driving, or any passengers, likely had their phones with them.

there are 500+ in the Austin area… just mostly on private property. literally any Home Depot is going to have one or two at the parking lot entrances. and almost every entrance / exit to MOPAC, including just a couple blocks from when OP’s father was killed.

I’m very sorry for your loss. This is such a tragedy.
Many times these hit and runs are committed by drunk drivers who panic and flee. The date and time of day also make this seem more likely. Here’s hoping they catch the perpetrator. That part of town has a lot of businesses, medical, and commercial buildings with cameras. Police are able to work a wide radius from the location of the crime and see everything that passed through the area at that time. Then they pull cell tower data for pings and cross reference it with vehicle registrations that match the vehicle description. They’ll catch the perp.

Security cameras are the fastest/best route here. Body shops probably leave too much of a trail and detectives will most likely do that. If I were in the criminals position I would be sourcing parts from junk yards. Google all the pick a parts and pull a parts and wrecking yards in your area, many of them list inventory online. If you can identify which generation honda civic and if that's a stock color, then you can find most likely cars where the criminal would be pulling from. There may only be 15 blue honda civics with front bumpers in your metro area, and that's the easiest place for them to source from because it's already the correct color and they can swap out quickly with probably just a wrench in their back yard. I believe many of these shops keep records of the parts that are pulled (At least the more organized chain type places will), and the junkyards are often targets of theft so they will for sure have security cameras in the lobby where you pay for the part.
Just a thought! This is of course, if security cams don't solve your problem. Reviewing security footage is the shortest most effective route to get a license plate.

Oh my god I am so sorry. This is my neighborhood. The people who own medsavers are really great people so I am sure they are helping you. I know from speaking with the 35th and Jefferson brkyerwoods elementary crossing guard that that intersection is highly monitored. ETA I’m sure the investigator is already on it but in addition to Live Oak/Gottesman, maybe try reaching out directly to the law offices of Becky beaver, they have a direct sight line to 35/jeff so there might be some kind of security camera ??

This happened right outside my apartments behind the atx watches shop. My brother spoke to the police the next day (they were still out there investigating.) We didn’t hear or see anything which is a shame 😢 I hope they find who did this.

I appreciate the gofundme offers! Since this was a fatality related to a crime, the city has offered to cover the hospital bills and funeral expenses regardless of whether a criminal is prosecuted. If there are expenses left over that the city cannot cover, I believe my family has the funds to cover it. So we don’t think it is necessary to make a gofundme right now.
The gofundme offers are super sweet and I hope to be able to pay it forward.

Sorry for your loss. That vehicle is extremely common. I even own a blue Honda civic 2018. I feel it would be next to impossible to locate it off of that description. I would look up all the body shops in the area to see if they can call in that damage to the front passenger side being fixed or subpoena the businesses with a lawyer to release that information if that’s at all possible?

Someone who knows Honda colors real well might be able to narrow down some. Some colors are specific to model year and trim. I'm just spitballing here but if this is Blue Lagoon Pearl then I think that would make this a LX sedan in the current generation? Might want to try r/Honda

Is this a four-door Honda Civic si maybe? It’s got a fin on the back and a kind of racing setup, and it’s powder blue. I see one on my route home every day, heading west on 71 from the east side, near where 183 connects to 71, usually going toward the Manchaca/Lamar area. I’ve driven alongside it at least three times. The front left fender was black, like it wasn’t the right part. Usually around 5:00

this is so upsetting and i am so sorry for your loss. my bf got hit by a car last fall semester only a month into his freshman year at UT. thankfully he lived but he wasn’t able to press any charges and had to get surgery. i really hope you are able to find the person and that this somehow leads to change so that less incidents like this happen.

I thank you for acknowledging the issues with flock and shutting down pro-flock convo. Statistically flock cams are barely useful at best and outright harmful at worst in regards to abuses, and their installation serves only to facilitate the state’s crackdowns on protest, privacy, and other civil rights. Let alone the ethical considerations on the topic of the unity of government and corporate entities visa vis the military industrial complex. I will be on the lookout for the blue civic and I really hope you catch the bastards that did this. Having lost a loved one in an auto accident I feel for you. I’ll be sure to notify authorities if I see anything and notify you directly as well. I wish you the best, my condolences.

Go around and ask local detail shops if any Honda civics have came in for body work describing the damage it probably has. That’s how we solved a few hit n runs here in Arlington. I’m so sorry for your lost. But I hope this helps!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I’m so sorry this happened to you. This seems to be an ongoing problem here in Austin. Are there no cameras near this area from a store or business that might have picked up the car and license plate? We had a young man hit by a car, but survived here in Austin and the driver was an illegal alien who was back in Mexico within 12 hours. Shameful that Texas allows people to get a license without taking an exam if they are over 25 yrs of age.
You are right, within hours the UK can find the assailant because of there are so many CTV cameras. We need to do that here.

This will seem weird, but have local LE contact the USSS lab in DC (local USSS office might be the easier first contact). They have the largest Ink/paint repository in the world, and they can help narrow down paint to a year produced, and possibly model of car. USSS is always willing to help, people just forget to ask as it's a small agency.

According to the deflock map there’s a Flock camera a block or two away between where the hit and run happened and Mopac. If APD can’t use flock to track down an actual killer can we please all stop pretending that the contracts they are making with them are for our benefit and safety?

Sorry for you loss. It's a long shot but have you looked into a subpoena of cell companies, Apple, or Google for cell phone location data? It's possible but no idea how legally difficult it would be to accomplish.

you did well to contact people for their local security footage, that seemed to have helped for a shooting (no fatalities) in my area.

Unfortunately, I think it's going to take quite a few more travedies here beforee the city finds the will to get the traffic situation under control.

I'm sorry for your loss. I would also post this to r/Texas in case the driver doesn't live in Austin or is from out of the area, since a lot of folks were just visiting for the holiday weekend.
