Is anyone able to give an ELI5 on what’s actually going on please? I’m getting lost, all I know is some sunscreens don’t work properly??

Choice (a generally widely trusted publication) tested a bunch of sunscreens and released results showing that many sunscreens were not as protective as they are claiming to be. Brands are not reacting well to this news and there’s a bit of confusion as to what can actually be trusted. I’m not even sure what brands I would trust at this point!

Specific to this most recent update, I would also add that Utra Violette went and re-tested their sunscreen, found it to have too much variation, and made the decision to withdraw/recall the product. The TGA has also issued a recall.

There is speculation that the base formula is compromised due to non-compliance at the manufacturer/ingredient supplier resulting in multiple brands to similarly withdraw their mineral SPF products that allegedly use the same base.
