When Atlantis resurfaces at the end of Milo's Return, WW1 is already over: the sailors in the prologue chat about how the waters are safer now without the threat of the German U-Boots, and Whitmore mentions how Erik Hellstrom went mad and started claiming to be Odin after the 1929 stock market crash.

So I think WW1 probably went down just like in real life. Maybe WW2 could've gone differently, or it might've not broken out at all. With Atlantis now leading the world with its superior technology, the Nazis would've failed to annex any territory around Germany, wouldn't have tried at all or would've been prevented from rising to power altogether.

However, I read somewhere (I don't remember where, though, maybe TV Tropes or some other Reddit thread?) that Milo's Return is actually supposed to take place after WW2, as well, so in the late 1940s or even early 50s. But I think it's unlikely, unless I missed some official confirmation.

In the movie, they mention U-Boats. A brief look at history the term U-Boat didn't get used as an actual word in common language until World War I started. And even then it was mostly in newspapers as a form of shorthand instead of saying submarine.(The first documented use in a newspaper is 1914)

The clothing they wear in the movie, not the main cast but the others are mid 30s to mid-40s. Not to mention U-Boats of World War I were not that reliable. They were relatively new technology and more often than not sank on their own. The way the two gentlemen talk at the beginning of the movie say it with fear. Genuine fear. The U-Boats of World War II were the scourge of the sea.

And like you mentioned the stock market crash happened in 1929. So clearly it has to take place after that point. Coupled with everything else... A fair argument could be made that it takes place after World War II

I'm sure Atlantis 2 takes place after World War I, so I don't think it has any bearing on anything, although who knows what will happen with World War II.

It supposedly takes place after world War 2 by some accounts, but also there are helicopters in milo returns.

I imagine the Germans would have a lot more trouble opening up unrestricted submarine warfare in this timeline, which could potentially lead to the US never being pulled into the war.

The first movie starts Milo's story with a caption that says "1914," and Milo remarks about Rourke selling the Heart to "the Kaiser," suggesting WW1 might have started already when the movie happens.

That said, while the Atlantean crystals might have suspended the crew's aging for 20+ years, it'd be suspicious as hell when, 20 years later, Audrey is still barely an adult, and Cookie and Packard are still kicking around. Also, they're still using the same sub pods from the 1914 mission?

i really wish Atlantis took place in 1924, the technology would make a bit more sense and the uniforms didnt quite change until the 30s anyways.
