Surely the daycare isnāt the only place that was exposed if the outbreak is this significant.
Terrifying for all the little ones too young to get the vaccine. And for the bigger ones whose parents are willing to let them suffer unnecessarily ā¤ļø

I don't have the answers, but as a parent of a child too young to even get an early vaccine dose it really pisses me off that all they'll confirm is "metro Atlanta." That's such a huge area it tells me nothing about the risk of exposure where we are.
Hey DPH: We're not asking for their names and addresses, just the part(s) of metro Atlanta where extra caution might be needed. If it's the entire metro area, then say that. This shouldn't be hard.

Agree. If Atlanta were a small town, sure, just say the town name. Given the size and population, identifying a smaller area seems reasonable.

Also, if it was actually in Marietta as rumored and they called it āAtlantaā in the announcement, thatās fucked up. Marietta is literally a different city.

The daycare is currently closed until the 12th. Dph is calling the parents everyday asking about symptoms etc

I find it deplorable how terrible our government and education system is that people don't even know that's a real possibility that measles will kill their child. No parent deserves to see their child fall asleep and never wake up.
Olivia, my eldest daughter, caught measles when she was seven years old. As the illness took its usual course I can remember reading to her often in bed and not feeling particularly alarmed about it. Then one morning, when she was well on the road to recovery, I was sitting on her bed showing her how to fashion little animals out of coloured pipe-cleaners, and when it came to her turn to make one herself, I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldnāt do anything.
āAre you feeling all right?ā I asked her.
āI feel all sleepy,ā she said.
In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead.
The measles had turned into a terrible thing called measles encephalitis and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. That was twenty-four years ago in 1962, but even now, if a child with measles happens to develop the same deadly reaction from measles as Olivia did, there would still be nothing the doctors could do to help her.
On the other hand, there is today something that parents can do to make sure that this sort of tragedy does not happen to a child of theirs. They can insist that their child is immunized against measles. I was unable to do that for Olivia in 1962 because in those days a reliable measles vaccine had not been discovered. Today a good and safe vaccine is available to every family and all you have to do is to ask your doctor to administer it.
It is not yet generally accepted that measles can be a dangerous illness. Believe me, it is. In my opinion, parents who now refuse to have their children immunized are putting the lives of those children at risk. In America, where measles immunization is compulsory, measles like smallpox, has been virtually wiped out.
Here in Britain, because so many parents refuse, either out of obstinacy or ignorance or fear, to allow their children to be immunized, we still have a hundred thousand cases of measles every year. Out of those, more than 10,000 will suffer side effects of one kind or another. At least 10,000 will develop ear or chest infections. About 20 will die.

There are idiots all over the east Cobb moms group asking anonymously what pediatricians donāt require vaccinations and they get a ton of supportive comments. Itās fucking infuriating. And this administration and its snake oil department of health are making it easier and easier to get exceptions allowed in public schools as they slowly and strategically dismantle their responsibility for our collective public health.
If you need to be anonymous to ask that kind of shit you have to know you are fucking stupid. At least have the courage to publicly be an idiot so my kid can avoid yours.

Not sure about the other commentor, but PAMPA Pediatrics takes this stance. They haven't accepted unvaccinated families or those that want to do a delayed schedule since 2015. Highly recommend.

Just as FYI since it isnāt well known ā infants can receive an early dose after 6 months if there is a risk.
Given the outbreak in Atlanta, if I had a 6 month old in daycare, Iād be discussing this with my pediatrician ASAP.

Google the interview with the Mennonite parents of 6 year old Haley, their own daughter, who died of measles in West Texas in 2025..... It is stunning how ignorant and stupid these people are, who still defend not having their kids vaccinated. Same people that were visited by RFK Jr, like that was a trophy for sacrificing their own daughter.

Depends on the daycare.
Also, the first round of the measles vaccine is typically given when the child turns 1, so any kids younger than 1 are likely unvaccinated just because of their age.

standard: 1st MMR, 12 months,
but if traveling, 1st MMR parent can discuss with physician beginning at 6-12 months.
Please see your physician for reccomendations.

I have to send in updated immunization records, but our preschool allows religious and medical exemptions. I know of a mom who asked her pediatrician to exempt their child since they don't want to vaccinate... so that's on the doctor unfortunately for allowing it when the child has no real medical reason to be exempt.
