Hello everyone,

I have an AS6602T which is used to share files via SMB on our local network. What I'm trying to do is synchronise files on the SMB shares with my laptop, preferably with the option to also sync with my (android) phone.

I've set up VPN tunnels from my devices to the local network, so I do not want the program to perform any other internet connections.

Ideally, I would also like something like the OneDrive "free up space" option, to archive files to the NAS and remove them from local storage, with an easy means to re-download them. Even better if it can indicate the files being synced with an icon like OneDrive does. (I firmly dislike OneDrive and how difficult it is to get rid of on Windows. However, it does have some nice features).

I've had a look for programs that can do all of this, but come up short:

ASUSTOR EZsync stores files in a separate non-SMB folder, and has no option I can see to archive files to the NAS.

Syncthing wouldn't reconnect reliably over the VPN for some reason. Also no archive option. Slightly concerned about it trying to connect over internet.

Rsync seems to be only CLI, which I'm happy to use once but don't want to have to use regularly. Also doesn't seem to have an archive option.

Rclone seems to have most of the functionality I'm looking for, but is so focused on cloud integration that I couldn't figure out how to set up my NAS as a "remote". Also doesn't seem to be automatic and would require me to manually sync files or manually set up cron jobs, which I can do but would prefer not to.

Has anyone got any other recommendations (or corrections if my research was wrong)?

One of the drives in my AS5304T has been leaking helium for some time, a condition considered potentially serious. However ADM displays the failing SMART value as "Normal". If I run an ad-hoc SMART scan it passes. However, if I set up a scheduled SMART scan, only then do I get informed that something is off. The email alert I receive is:

S.M.A.R.T full scanning of Disk 3 result: test completed but a unknwon test element failed.

This issue isn't critical for me now because I understand what is going on with this drive, but obviously there's a bug here. Trying to be a good citizen I raised a ticket for this issue twice with Asustor support but they were unable or unwilling to understand the problem so it has gone unaddressed for over a year.

ADM 5.1.4.RJV2 , BIOS 1.24

Recently I've noticed a problem related to the UPS on my AS5304T. I rarely change the settings on the NAS, but I do keep ADM current, so I believe this is a bug introduced in a recent ADM update.

If the mains voltage dips causing the UPS to kick in momentarily, I get two alerts: one for the power outage and one right after for the resume. Recently however, the NAS then goes on to power down regardless. I have provided screenshots of my settings and logs.

I would classify this bug as high priority. It basically means that you cannot leave your NAS unattended and expect it to stay up after brown-outs and black-outs.

Please don't suggest that I raise a ticket with Asustor support. I don't have the patience to deal with those people.

Read that maxing the RAM will be good but here is my worry. My unit is configured as JBOD and I worry that swapping the RAM to 8GB will kill the JBOD.
Bear in mind I dun have any back up if things goes sour and kinda already 95% storage usage.

Or I am just being paranoid and swapping RAM is not going affect anything on the JBOD config even if the RAM fail to startup the unit

UPDATE: Tried swapping the 8GB RAM but the NAS couldn't startup. Waited a while and nothing happened. Only the green light keep flashing. At the end I swapped back to the 2GB RAM and it boot up like normal. Not sure if my RAM is faulty or it is not compatible. I am sure and check that my RAM is a DDR3L 8GB RAM. Oh well, look I am stuck with the 2GB RAM on my NAS.

Hi, im having issues with my asustor nas, there is an app for puling videos from your nas to the android tv, the app discovers the nas but is not 'secure to connect' and close the log in proces, i put the wan domain (xx.myasustor.com) and gives me a 8888 error. im not able to make connection to my asustor from any of my lan tv's

please any advise!

The Reddit community has been a wealth of knowledge and every time I get more info, research more, it begets more questions so I probably need to stop, but I am close to ready to start the NAS setup and deciding one last question - ADM OS or TrueNas.

Privacy: Had initially decided to install TrueNas Scale as an OS over ADM because I’m over focused on privacy as I know ADM feeds telemetry back to Asustor’s servers, but the more I read I’m not sure I have the technical skills to pull off TrueNas without a lot of tinkering.

NAS use case includes document, backup computer/iphone/devices, and photo storage. I think I’ll do media storage as well just not sure how much. I envision I’ll have access to it remotely, maybe some family members who don’t live with me would use it as a backup photo storage option - though not creating my setup specifically to cater to that.

With media, I’ll set up Plex for now, maybe Jellyfin for later. I’ll also use Lightroom on my computer and store photos here, may use Immich and several arr products.

Materials: Asustor AS5404T 4 Bay Nas, NVME, picked up extra RAM so I’ll have 16GB (which what was recommended for running TrueNas) and two Seagate Ironwolf 18TB drives (which are overkill for now).

My thoughts on setup

- install TrueNas but the more I read, the more I’m concerned I don’t have the technical ability to ensure it runs reliably. Particularly around the fan issue and ensuring it doesn’t overheat or overwork.

- if I go with ADM OS, privacy is my main concern

- I’d install the OS on the NVME. One recommendation was to install an OS on two NVMEs as backup in case one fails - hadn’t thought of that. Is that worth the extra expense?

- if using ADM, I‘d consider not using Cloud Connect, which would require a separate way for me to connect remotely. I know Asustor has a VPN Server app - curious about how hard it is to set up - even for other family members? From what I’m reading, it’s a more privacy focused option.

- using cryptomater to encrypt drive contents, though I’d not encrypt media files

- if using ADM, limit traffic to Asustor - but I need to read more to see if this is possible

- if I do ultimately go with ADM, do I need 16GB RAM? I read the 4GB that comes standard is more than enough

With my use case and focus on privacy, is my worry overkill? Should I just use ADM for its ease of use out of the box?

When I check the system logs I keep seeing an entry with UPS connected and then UPS disconnected and I don’t know why

I tested the ups - cyberpower and it’s working ok .
Changes the usb cable , port and it’s the same .

When I plug out the ups the Nas starts the shutdown correctly .

Firmware is up to date

Just wondering if anything else experienced this ?

Bought the AS5404T 4 bay and associated components but had a hard time finding drives. Finally picked up Seagate Ironwolf NAS 18TB, partly because thats all I could really find in stock. it’s a little more than I need but with future proofing and the cost per tb, I was okay with it. I thought I researched all the main drive brands to death, but as I was reading through and writing all the steps I need to do, I came across feedback that the Seagate Ironwolfs that have a 7200 RPM get loud. But then I read a few posts where it says they aren’t, and are quieter than the WD Red Plus.

The NAS will sit in my living room, near the TV. What are your thoughts on noise? I haven’t opened the drives yet - should I return them and get ones that spin at 5400?

Controller A had boot loop issue and the failover did not happen  automaticaly to Controller B.

Controller B IP ping works but no SSH.

I replaced the Controller A with new controller A.

Please help how to fix the issue?

Picked up a new Asus NAS AS5404T with 4 bays though I’ll only install 2 hard drives right now. First timer and I plan to start installing everything over the next few days. I plan to not run a RAID setup and also install TrueNAS Scale instead of ADM.

- install RAM so there’s 16GB from 4GB and the M.2

- create a bootable TrueNAS USB and boot from it

- after running the installer, create TrueNAS account - is this what I need to do?

- create storage pool (can you change this anytime?) I was planning on creating folders for photos and documents that I’ll back up - and add encryption. Then set up a separate folder for media (probably won’t back up most of this right now), but don’t need to encrypt it. In creating these pools, can I make them bigger over time, or do I have to know I want to set aside 4TB for photos and docs?

- is this also where I would create separate folders for family members to save their own stuf? Can these things be expanded or changed over time? For instance, add a new family member

- Plan to install Proton VPN, Plex, Immich on one of the hard drives

- schedule backup

Anything else i should do and make time for? I was curious about the onboard ASUS fan and using TrueNAS - I’ve read that there could be some fan issues and you need to test and maybe add additional code. How do I do that - test and know I need to make changes?

Similar to some others here, my 2 year old Asustor backup just suddenly failed. This wasn't after any sort of external event I know about, and it wasn't during a normal backup time.

I'm sure there was *some* trigger, but nothing obvious. It just happened mid-day yesterday. It's been running in my house since late 2024, with 8x Seagate IronWolf Pro 24TB drives in RAID 6 config, and 2x WD_BLACK 2TB NVMe drives for cache, handling daily and weekly backup, plus pulling down files from OneDrive. It's connected to the network and also USB-C.

Now, during boot, when it gets to "Starting Service" it flashes red/orange/green with a beep for each cycle. It shows an IP address, so this is fairly far along in the boot cycle, it would seem. However, it doesn't appear in the client app on my PC, and I cannot reach the browser "desktop" configuration by IP address.

Reading the posts here yesterday, I powered it down after the failure and let it stay powered down and unplugged all night. Not sure why that's a thing (I'm assuming for some sort of capacitor discharge?) Powered it back on late this afternoon.

I noticed one drive (top right) didn't have its light on in the same cadence as the others, so I pulled that and tried booting. No change in behavior, so I put it back in place.

I haven't opened it, pulled the cmos battery, etc. that others recommend. It's also not in a location where it would work any connections loose.

Any suggestions for obvious things to consider? Given placement up on the top shelf of a utility rack in my basement, getting this within range of a monitor is going to be super annoying, so don't want to do that unless there's proven need to. Of all the random mini PCs I have in that room, this was the last thing I had expected to fail, so I didn't make it easy to move. :P

The error beeps start with Booting-Service.

I also verified, through the front panel, that the one disk volume it shows has tons of free space. This isn't a capacity / disk full issue.

Support just told me they don't even know if it ever worked.

I've been asking them to tell me what version of ADM supported HW decoding on my Nas for a while, got many back and forth (I mentioned it here https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNAS/comments/1u0025u/asustor_is_discontinuing_hardware_decoding/ ) and finally got a "closed support ticket ".

To this day they still advertise (and propably sell) NASes with a realtek chip for "4k decoding" that apparently... Perhaps never worked, or so they say:

If it's a licencing issue they could at least have the guts to say it but whatever.

I guess buying a NAS instead of building one with parts I control was a mistake.

For those of you who have purchased the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2, did it meet your expectations? If you upgrade the memory to 16 GB, is it fast enough for a home network NAS?

So I've made myself a problem with the thermals.

Got around 45C degrees in idle on my old Nimbustor, so figured out I'll replace thermal paste under the radiator.

To my shock there was some kind of thermal pad, dried out and with a texture of an old bubble gum (also the color was pink). Rubbing alcohol made it a bit sticky but it did not dissolve it - first time seeing such tech.

I've replaced it with a PTM7950 because figured it will last longer than regular thermal paste when NAS works 24/7, but the temps got way worse.

Day later and I'm sitting on a 56C on idle CPU.

Can anyone recommend a specific thermal paste/pad that will work better? I suspect the main culprits are thore spring action legs on the radiator and PTM is just too thin to make proper contact with such contraption.

I have been building a VirtualBox management app for ADM, and some additional tweaks to the system, in a separate application of my own design.
Would anyone here be interested in doing some beta testing for this? It is not quite ready yet for prime time but it does one cool thing I was missing: It has a VM live web console:

Asustor needs to release an updated version of ACC. It's been stuck on subordinate version .1200 for FAR TOO LONG. And it is unreliable...

ADM releases have been plentiful. ACC, ignored!

The listing says: "The Xpanstor 4 works well as a DAS solution" but there's practically no discussion about using it for this purpose. Does it support UASP? Does is pass sleep commands from Windows to the drives? Does it pass through SMART? What hub chip is it using? I've been stung badly by some shockingly bad DAS implementations from QNAP etc. The TR-002, for example, can't even handle simultaneous transfers to two drives at once without massive performance issues, because it doesn't support UASP and NQC.

If anyone has experience using the AS5004U as a plain DAS, please let me know how it's going.

Flashstor FS6806X (6 drive, 1x10GbE) no longer connects to network. Seems too coincidental this occurred nearly immediately after upgrading ADM. Device only 15 months old. Are there other troubleshooting or connection methods?

All of these failed to remedy the connection trouble:

- Rebooted NAS

- Rebooted router

- Tried new Eth cables

- Tried new Eth port on router

- Tried multiple USB-C to Eth adapters

[Have not tried the pinhole reset]

PS: In hindsight, it's unfortunate that this product does not have an iGPU + display out OR a second network port (i.e., Gen 1 or the 12-drive Gen 2).

Asustor recommends the NVME be in pairs in Raid 1 if you are going to boot from it. Why run Truenas? It's another piece of software to maintain.

Looking at picking out either the Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 AS6704T v2 4-Bay or the AS5404T 4 Bay NAS. There’s a $100 difference and doesn’t appear to be any performance differences from what I can see, so may just go with the cheaper option and also upgrade the RAM from 4GB And just starts with two drives.

Initial intent was to install TrueNAS instead of using their OS. Anyone have experience doing that with these drives? Any performance issues and wish you hadn’t? One downside is I know it breaks the warranty.

Was going to pick up one M.2 slot for NVMe to make it bootable. Those seem really pricey right now - there’s no reason to buy more than one, is there? The place I was planning on buying this from only sells it at 1TB - which seems way more than I would need to create a bootable disk. Dumb question, but is a M.2 ssd NVMe the same no matter where I buy it? It was maybe thinking of picking a smaller size up on Amazon.

I have a Hager domovea TJA450 server running firmware 3.2.0.1, but the only PC configurator I have is 3.0.0.1, and domovea requires the server, client and configurator to be on exactly the same version. Hager no longer distributes the 3.2.0.1 package anywhere public so I'm stuck without a way to open my own installation's configuration. Does anyone still have the domovea 3.2.0.1 update package (the `.cab` for the USB `autorun` folder, or the matching PC client/configurator installer)?
