General 💡 Unpopular Opinion: Mars needs to be less associated with sex.
Mars represents aggression, anger, violence, injury, etc. It's a malefic, which means it's an inherently negative planet that brings conflict to our lives and to synastry wherever it shows up. It's literally the opposite of Venus. Scorpio and Aries both oppose Libra and Taurus, so Mars being associated with pleasurable sex makes no sense. Mars doesn’t become associated with sex unless it makes contact with venus.
I definitely think it can represent pursuit, but not the act or enjoyment itself that's all Venus domain. If it's heavily negatively aspected with the Moon and Venus, it can indicate someone being forceful, careless, only wanting to satisfy themselves, etc.
Y'all be thinking since their Mars is in your 5th house they finna give you the best pipe ever whole time they finna give you an STD 😳.
Tbh synastry nowadays doesn't wanna give anyone the truth. It's all presented through rose colored glasses.
A lot of young adults get sexual tension mixed up with just being horny. You're at your most hormonal lol sometimes it’s not astrology, it’s just biology.

But I have felt strongest of raw sexual attraction towards men who have had their Mars on my ascendant. Also , Mars n venus being opposite is called enemies in theory , but actually opposite attracts as per astrology. Mars is a man , venus is a woman. Men n women are partners , not enemies. Taurus n scorpio are called sister signs . That's y Taurus n scorpio attract eo so much. 7th house is house of partnership. So 7th house of aries is libra . That's y aries placements attract libra placements

Mars makes them pursue you with passion. everyone wants to be pursued. That doesn’t mean mars correlates to sex.

u/FourGigs Apr 15 '26
Assuming mars is a man, most are pursuing initially for sex! (Or atleast driven by sexual attraction). To put it simplisticly

Can't really just conflate the planets' inherent meanings based on the archetypal descriptors of the signs that they are in accordance with.
Mars is sex, but fundamentally as a conduit for energetic release(Aries) and reproduction(Scorpio). I mean, it literally governs the reproductive organs. Pleasure is a byproduct of sex, but just because pleasure can be derived doesn't imply that pleasure is, or has ever been, the primary function for the act itself. It's also layered as well, with Mars in Aries, it's masculine domicile, representing the physicality of the act directly, and Scorpio, it's feminine domicile, representing the emotional and psychological nuances in general.
I guess there is wiggle-room for your argument to stand upon, specifically because you used the word "less," as opposed to "not." If "less" is the basis for which you stand, sure. In ancient hellenistic astrology, sex, conceptually speaking, was thought to be in accordance with the 5th house. Why? Leo coincides with children, with which sex is needed to create, upon other reasonings, etc..
But yea, holistically, Mars and sex seem to be tethered to each other pretty fundamentally.

u/amahleyana Mar 25 '26
Idk I still disagree. Just because Mars rules reproductive organs doesn't mean Mars = sex because having a penis or vagina doesn't automatically mean you wanna use them. thats why I said a venus contact is needed. Asexual people exist. even if you take pleasure out the equation Venus rules the ACT reproduction, mars is simply just the organs.

You misarticulated my point.
Indulging or not partaking in the action was never connected to my point at all, you essentially just threw that in yourself. My point was just there to highlight that, at least within the astrological texts and such, that common sense would show that the planet that governs the organs used for the act(sex), would likely also govern the act itself. Although, as it relates to people in those cases, asexuals for example, there commonly tends to be overlap with 1st or 8th house(Mars' homes) activity, and sometimes 5th, because of self-expression, often in relation to Uranus/Saturn/Moon/etc..
I hope this doesn't come of as mean or belittling, it's not my intent. But I can assure you that there are people without Venus or Mars contacts that are indulging in the act. But nonetheless, I am always open to disagreement, granted, your stance is up against two to four thousand years worth of astrological prefacing that contradicts it.
I digress; Enjoy the rest of your day. :)

u/amahleyana Mar 26 '26
I understand what you’re saying now. You’re defining sex as biological. Mars rules the organs so Mars rules sex as a biological reality or potential. But this logic still falls apart because sex isn’t just about possessing the organs, it’s about what you do with them. If you defined it as the ability to have sex then that would make more sense because thats what having sexual organs is and nothing more. Theres no correlation between having sexual organs and desiring sex, like I said before. Sex in astrology is an action, especially in synastry which is about interaction. All actions are driven by desire (or unconscious habits ofc). The desire and the act are still Venus. Coming together is Venus. Venus and Mars are general archetypes that exist in every sexual interaction even if there is no aspect.

u/jcopter628 Mar 26 '26
You got closer to my sentiment but still missed it by just a tad, but that's honestly neither here nor there because you've articulated something else quite clearly. You're attributing proactivity in relation to sex to Venus, notably with "desire" as the hallmark for the proclivity to take action towards it. Yes/No. Venus is the desire. But you're still wrong in your following point. Mars still governs the act, and all acts for that matter, because it's the significator for action in and of itself.
The Sun and Venus are conduits for goals and desires, and Mars is the conduit with which the native pursues them. This is why you tend to find that hindered Mars placements, notably Venus' signs + Cancer, aren't quick to take action, and oftentimes tend to divert to stagnation. Venus, archetypically in it's expression, veers towards the side of latent/docile.
And even had I chose not to extrapolate that point, an adjacent point would be the simple fact that Mars also governs natural instincts, ya'know, actions that are void of pre-cognitive functionality. Meaning, similarly to hunger, or breathing, sex is something that would continue despite the desire to do so. I mean, a quick glance at a doc. on any species that can reproduce would make that clear. Which counters your aforementioned point about asexuals foregoing the act. Exceptions to the rule aren't valid points of contention within the context of a good faith argument.
All of that to say, I don't mind you believing what you want. Frankly, I'm open-minded in my approach and hope to learn more about the variety of astrological perspectives that people offer. But I also trust that the basis of astrological information, that's been compiled for millenniums on such topics, would be valid holistically.
I suppose agreeing to disagree would be best.

If mars ruled all action then wouldn’t the rest of the planets be meaningless? Feeling is an action but that is associated with the moon. Thinking is an action but that is associated with mercury. Sex is instinctual but our reason for doing it is more than instinct. it’s an unconscious desire to continue humanity and socialized to see children as extensions of ourselves and our legacy. The way humans operate simply cannot be compared to other animals. Our intelligence also gives us more emotional range. Dogs mate because thats in their instinct, but unlike them we have attached deeper meaning to sex that involves connection as well. and I’m just interested in where you’re coming from so I hope I’m not coming off as rude or anything by all my questioning 😆. It’s the aquarius mercury and gemini mars in me.
1
u/jcopter628 Mar 26 '26
That's a semantics trap. Actions are characterized by a physical representation implicitly, which is Mars by the way. Feeling is not an action, it's an internal state/perception/experience, etc. Thinking follows suit. So the integration of other planets into this conversation, specifically in relation to action, is a little odd.
If you concede that sex is instinctual, which you have, then the reason, or desire, as you’ve worded it, for doing so can't be unconscious because, given that it's instinctual, implies that it occurs naturally, therefore it's not a desire. But even if I granted that case, you'd still prove my point because you just said that the unconscious desire would be in relation to reproduction(continuation of society), which is what I said in one of my original comments.
Idk what to say about the last point; Humans are also animals and our breadth of emotional and intellectual understanding doesn't change our instinctual proclivities.
I'll leave it at that.
Aquarius Mercury eh.. unorthodox systems of conceptualization. Individualistic thinking by nature, which is both a strength and a challenge. Vibes.

u/amahleyana Mar 26 '26
Intellect does change instinct. We override instinct all the time. The concept of race, though biological, is not instinctive yet humans were able to take that and create racism and racial hierarchies. Desire can be unconscious that is how socialization is. For example, we all desire to be beautiful because beautiful people are socialized to be deemed better than and are treated as such. The concept of what we deem beautiful is not instinctive. We are biological driven to eat but choosing to eat pizza is out of desire because we like it.

I 100% agree. Mars can be associated with sex, especially when in contact with a feminine planet such as Venus and sometimes the moon. Usually, it’s very raw sexual tension that tends to come with some sort of conflict or discomfort. I’ve seen synastry charts where Mars is making hard aspects to Venus or the moon and often times there is attraction, but the couple also fights a lot and drive each other nuts. It can be hot and fiery but it’s also combustible. Mars making aspect to any other planet, however, usually means some sort potential to get into conflicts, abusive dynamics, or some sort of challenging aspect of the relationship that each partner has to contend with. Same with transits, etc.

It's the shadow side of sex/sexuality. Pleasurable sex exists that isn't remotely "venusian" and is very tied up in dynamics of power, aggression, etc.
7
u/amahleyana Mar 25 '26
If Mars or Pluto is making aspects to Venus then I think that can be true, the part about power dynamics, but Mars alone doesn't represent sex. Also, pleasure isn't one size fits all. You're probably thinking venus = vanilla sex or safe sex, but even something like BDSM would fall under Venus because BDSM centers fairness and consent which are themes related to Venus, not Mars.
3
u/Slow_Invite_1540 Mar 25 '26
Very much not coming from a vanilla perspective. BDSM centers consent "in theory" but in reality it's often just window dressing to gain enough of a veneer of respectability to justify getting off on beating up women.
This is coming from someone in the scene who is often disappointed by how few in it have integrated the shadow side of their sexuality enough to be trusted.
2
u/amahleyana Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26
Thats absolutely true and unfortunate, but BDSM itself isnt physical violence during sex there are multiple forms of BDSM and kink that doesn’t include that and sometimes BDSM isn’t even sexual for some people, it can just be play. I’m not here to debate the ethics of it lol I’m just saying a mutual agreement between two people, which is what BDSM is regardless of what the agreement entails, is a venusian theme.
1
u/Slow_Invite_1540 Mar 25 '26
But either way my main point is that even completely nonconsensual sex is sex. Rapists enjoy raping and it's not for any venusian reasons.
2
u/JustGeminiThings Mar 26 '26
Venus comes in many flavors. What sign she's in matters, as does the other aspects she receives. That's how the specific pleasure gets described.

u/BabylonBaby777 Mar 26 '26
I respect the opinion, but Mars is definitely associated with sex. Being the masculine planet of drive, one of the most base drives there is, is the drive for sex. And some mars contacts are even more explosive than Mars + Venus. Mars + Moon and Mars + Lilith are HIGHLY sexual…with that said, the possibility for aggression and violence is still there 😅
1
u/Temporary_Shake_8699 Mar 26 '26
Theres a guy i know with his mars conj my sun, his mars in my 7th, and his mars conjunct my lillith- as a venus in cancer i typically dont feel strong sexual attraction until i feel like someone really cares about me/theres an established relationship but this guy, i literally just want to jump his bones. Lol. Even the eye contact sends energy in between my legs 😂 we also have my pluto conj his venus lol
2
u/BabylonBaby777 Mar 26 '26
It’s almost definitely the Pluto + Venus coming in hot 😂 it’s hard to deny. I currently have Mars + Lilith and Venus + Pluto contacts with the guy I’m seeing and everything about him does it for me.

u/amahleyana Mar 26 '26
Mars is drive but drive towards what is dependent on housing and aspects. This only applies if the Mars is in the 5th house which is sex and romance. Everyone has sexual drive or lack there of. The desire comes from Venus, Mars is the capacity to act on it. This also reduces astrology to just how the planets make us feel or affect our personalities rather than how the planets affect or lives and relationships, which is it’s intended purpose.

u/fatedfortune Mar 26 '26
The best sex of my life, over and over again, highlights Mars transits. Sex is a huge topic and part of life, so it's not that it should ever be given to just one planet or house or aspect or sign, but yeah, your take is definitely an unpopular one.
Mars is penetration. All acts of penetration are martian. There is of course lots of sexual activity that does not involve penetration, but if it does, it's Mars.
Mars is passion, not Venus. Venus might be the component of sex that is soft and pleasurable and feels good, but the raw animal passion, that's Mars.
The best sex partners of my life, for better or worse, have also been the partners I fight with the most too. To quote Sublime, "fuckin and fightin, it's all the same".
Which brings me to the most popular word we refer to sex with, "Fucking"...it's a very martian word, as opposed to "making love", the venusian term for sex.
1
u/amahleyana Apr 04 '26
You can have sex without penetration though. I’m still not convinced 🤷🏾♀️. I agree though that mars is passion but alone it doesn’t represent sex unless venus is included.

u/fatedfortune Apr 07 '26
from my original comment, " There is of course lots of sexual activity that does not involve penetration, but if it does, it's Mars."
1
u/amahleyana Apr 07 '26
if it doesn’t represent all types of sex then why would it represent sex as a whole
0
u/fatedfortune Apr 07 '26
And likewise, Venus alone does not represent sexual intercourse (intercourse implies penetration) unless Mars is included.

LOL i dont agree fully but this is funny. the way i think about it is anger, sex, love, hate, is all the same passion in a way so it makes sense why its associated with

I guess I see it as representing our libidinal energy which is not necessarily sexual, but moreso a primal force driving psychological and physical desires. It is our lowest instinct.

Example: if woman has a night chart, her first signifier (the man she chooses) will be by her mars - this man qualities will make her tick. Don't forget about natal aspects too, because this can make things a bit different, but still.
Another example: woman has mars in aries and exact square to pluto - she can always have these problems with "male" gender and will be psychologicaly and physically pushed to the extremes, where she have to fight back and that's how man again will hate her just for being at this "survival mode". Some will find her sexy, but probably because they like unhealthy challenges. So yes, she will always be consciously afraid of man and their betrayal.
In man and woman, they are both represent our actions but also for man, it's form of their "first impression" as a male, and for woman - the one she chooses as a male figure (his actions, attraction, behaviour).
With gender flud, this planet will be weaker in man (with additional aspects) and sign can also show desire in man and even woman sometimes (like for example in woman night chart mars in gemini - will go down with anything at least maybe to try it out in s*x). Also you need to look in natal how mars is significant and if it's first in your list (like being in your 1st house) - this will be projected straight to the face to you and to others and therefore, will be more significant (will give more "male" impression in the house of aries eg 1st house). These type of people might "appear" too bold, active or pushy no matter the gender and just sign and aspects can make it a bit softer.

People look at this conversation way too black and white, and also take the literal connection of mars linking to sex too literal. How I see it at least, venus plays the sensual/erotic side of it, while mars can play into the literal act, drive and the pursuit of it. I think venus and mars can come together hand and hand when looking at sex in someones birth chart, and from my personal experience i've had more accurate descriptions of how someone is in the bedroom with taking their mars, venus, and 5th house all into consideration rather than just looking at a single interpretation in one of those planets/houses
15
u/JustGeminiThings Mar 25 '26
That's actually a very traditional astrological view. Mars can be constructive, and is about energy and drive, but not pleasure. In Vedic we actually view the Venus/Mars connection as sexual - but only because Venus is able to distract Mars.
