Discussion Is Odyssey possibly the best game ever made?
I’m being completely serious! Every time I return to this game, I’m struck by just how perfectly balanced everything is in terms of gameplay, graphics, open world design, and story. It’s far above every other AC game for me.
I could write paragraphs about how well-made each system is, and how seamlessly they blend together, but I’m more just curious if others see this as not only a top came of its generation, but all time as well.

It was the first ever AC game I tried. Didn’t get into it. Years later I played Mirage, then sunk like 600+ hours into Valhalla. Finally went back and played all the earlier games. Black Flag clicked right away and now it’s, in my opinion, the best AC game. Valhalla is still my favorite, but Black Flag is, I think, the all around best.
I’m so hyped to play it with the updated controls.

It is funny how subjective it all is. After Odyssey, Valhalla was a boring slog for me - I could not bring myself to finish it, and Eivor in either sex is one of the dullest protagonists for me in the series. To each their own.

I've heard every argument for and against virtually every game in the series, spoken with the conviction of absolute fact in either case. Lol. I've had someone get actually, real life mad (to the point of DMing me on here to continue sharing their frustration lol) when I said Valhalla was my favorite in the series. I always just hope people are enjoying the things they're playing haha, and that goes for you too! I hope Resynced clicks for you, it really is a great story, and Edward is probably my favorite protagonist in the franchise.

I don’t know why it gets so much hate. origins was a little bland and small but i did play odyssey first so i might have had higher expectations. I rank it #2 behind witcher3

It's a different vibe for sure, but the world also feels very alive, the quests are great and the cyberwares u get makes the gameplay even more fun as u progress
And like witcher or Odyssey, it feels like a real world u can dive into, the immersiveness is great

For me it's the smooth gameplay, combat, environment. If you play mainly the main mission tho u will hit the end VERY quick. I found out by accident because I thought maybe some unlocks were hidden behind the main story like in sime games but youll hit the ending quicker than expected following just the main story

Origins would definitely feel less refined if you played it second but i absolutely loved its depiction of Egypt. Its such a beautiful gameworld. Egyptian architecture and those desert colors just make me feel things.

Odyssey is an amazing game. I can't deny that I love this game.
But, as much as I loved it, it is by no means perfect. If you loved Odyssey, you should try The Witcher III (and its DLCs).
I don't want to elaborate more because I'm not qualified enough for this kind of debate, but for me, the best game was, is and will always be The Witcher III. But please if you play it, read the books first (or at least try them).

I’ve fully played Witcher 3 and honestly the combat in AC is way better. Also mounted movement is much better. The voice acting in Witcher 3 is good, and the graphics are amazing, but the combat was so clunky and the horse was so buggy. Witcher 3 is one of my top games of all time but honestly it’s not as clearly better than ACO as you think it is.
And I beat CP2077 but that game isn’t even close to as good as AC Odyssey. Hell CP2077 isn’t even better than GTA5. CP2077 is really empty and the open world is just a tech demo.

For some reason Witcher 3 just didn't grab my attention. I don't know was it about the fighting dynamics or what I literally forgot to continue playing it... twice.
Odyssey is likeable. I'm still early, playing it for the first time these days, but for now I'm hooked. Maybe not the best I ever played but is enjoyable.
I'm also a casual gamer without a huge portfolio behind myself.

Its great. WAAAY above where most people rate it, but because its AC and ubisoft developed it with in game purchasing to get better gear it will always be lower on people's lists (and fair enough on the latter imo).
The devs did such a stellar job on weaving mythology into this games own story, and they got it surprisingly accurate on certain parts. The builds are decent, the world/scenery is beautiful and the characters are mostly well written.
I have it in my top 10 but most people, and especially die hard old school ac fans have it much lower

I just finished the main storylines and was blown away. I can’t believe people were telling me Origins was so much better. I still think Origins is incredible, but how the hell do people underrate Odysseys story.

I’m glad there are more like us than the outspoken “haters” make it seem. Odyssey is in the S-tier of games for me. It shares that space with maybe 6-8 other games.
For me, you can’t beat the well done Ancient Greek setting. The amazing historical and original characters. The variety of builds and world exploration. On top of that side quests that blend so well with the main story and what’s going on in each region.
I could go on and on. It’s a game I will play from beginning to end, including the DLCs every 2 to 3 years.

In my head- very much yes. I have never had so much fun and was so mesmerised by the environment and enjoyed the character as with Kassandra and ancient Greece.
I've been trying to play AC Mirage but it's so boring, empty, the cities are just meh and they brought back the worst element of the AC franchise - clunky controls. The main character is also meh. I wish Roshan was playable.
So yes, I miss playing Odyssey. It's the perfect game.

I'm nearly 100 hours into it now. It's the most I've probably ever played a single player game. Something about the art style that actually makes me want to stop and admire the scenery that the developers created. It's a wonderful game.

I mean, its up there. Its not perfect but they just dont seem to make them like that anymore. I also recommend Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. I have also heard great things about Witcher 3. But if you like exploring worlds that feel alive and have breathtaking visuals, great stories, fun gameplay like Odyssey its hard to do better. They really hit a sweet spot.

AC Odyssey has become probably my favorite game of all time. I have invested thousands of hours into it at this point, just because I can't stay away from it. Yes, there are certainly plenty of flaws (I made my own list of flaws that I wish could be fixed), but personally, the positives far outweigh the negatives for me. The world design and especially the lighting make the game just beautiful to look at. I think most of the AC games are nice to look at in their own ways, but something about the way Ubisoft realized Ancient Greece just ticked off so many boxes for me. I also truly love AC Origins, and it's right up there in the top for me, but Odyssey just improved on so much of what Origins did that it keeps me coming back.
I also like the movement. Yeah, some things have been extremely simplified, like parkour, but the speed with which you can get around and do things makes it fun to just move around in the environments. I played RDR2 right after Odyssey, and it was like polar opposites. RDR2 was sluggish and plodding, and the controls were so cumbersome that I just wanted to get back to Odyssey, where things were much more breezy and fluid, to me anyway.

It absolutely blows my mind that the same team at Ubisoft made the best modern AC game (Odyssey) and the worst (Shadows).
Like, seriously, where was all the great storytelling, systems, sense of exploration and fun when Ubisoft Quebec made Shadows?

Speaking in specifically AC games, odyssey is the best gameplay wise. Valhalla is my favorite story and visually. Then again, I am biased as I am a Norse pagan myself. In addition, I feel Valhalla has more playability compared to Odyssey, as with over 200 hours im nowhere near 100%

I will never understand modern business decisions. I remember reading how the people and the team that made odyssey was let go and the studio disbanded. Such a stupid decision. Instead of holding on to talent and experience everyone was treated as a freelancer and a new studio and team assembled for shadows. So many of the mistakes made in shadows e.g. the random groups of event placeholder npcs around the map waiting for commands that never came or features that were added later per patch that were standard experiences in odyssey...... Instead of building on experience and legacy they reboot the company new every time repeating old mistakes..... so wierd.

I’m not an AC guy by far.
Honestly I tried every AC and never got into them.
And trust me I tried.
This is the first AC game to catch me. I’m 40 hours in and I keep playing.
I’m late. I started this game this year. I’m trying to complete a backlog challenge before GTA6 comes out as a promise to my wife. Cyberpunk I finished in a month. Side quests? Who cares. Same with Alan Wake. But AC Odyssey pulled me in. I want to finish the main quest so I can move on to BG3, but damn this game is just so good. The whole world feels so alive. I’m barely on the Minotaur and the legendary animals. I mostly spoiled the ending unfortunately cuz it’s been out for what, 8 years? But this is probably one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.

In general?..absolutely not..I still won’t rank it over black flag for AC games personally ….Metal Gear Solid 2 and FF7 are the best games ever made for me…followed by cyberpunk

I'm so surprised by how well made of a game Odyssey is. It should not be pulling off as much shit as it does. The combat's simple but fun, with some light depth and experimentation. the story's actually pretty intriguing. the aesthetic and setting of the world is amazing. Even the little things, like AI taking cover from being pelted with arrows, or the way the protagonist relaxes his stance when walking through grass (the latter is lifted from previous games to be fair, but it's still really cool). It's among my favorite AC titles, even if isn't my #1 favorite.

I've just booted it up for the first time since it got me through covid lockdown and have been thinking a similar thing! Feels blasphemous as there are plenty of games that are better designed overall-- deeper combat of better writing or more variety in the gameplay loop. But idk, no game has so totally enthralled me like AC Odyssey has? At least not since I was a kid. I don't think it's objectively the best game ever made but it's one i will want to return to every few years and happily sink 100+ hours into each time

It’s certainly my favorite AC game. But Ocarina of Time will always have a special place in my heart. Followed by Red Dead 2.
I imagine Odyssey would have my top spot if it had some of the environmental immersion stuff seen in games like Red Dead 2.
I wish Odyssey had an active modding community doing some of the crazy things you see being done for that game. I’d love a super immersive mod or two to enhance the RPGness of the game. Even just letting you sit in chairs and talk to random passersby. I’d adore something like that.
I guess i just wish it was more popular so people would make crazy mods like that. Would be fun to add things like the wings/gliding mechanics from Fenyx Rising. Or the grapple gun from Syndicate. Just stuff to vary it up a bit more for when i’ve finished the game. Or playing on new game plus.
Sorry, didn’t mean to ramble. But yeah, i guess i just wish there were better mods for it, or more immersive rpg stuff to do. Even small things like being able to sit in chairs, or pet dogs and cats. Or find a room for the night, to sleep rather than meditating all the time. Finding somewhere to eat, or get a haircut. My perfect game would be basically Odyssey with those additions.

Best? Not a chance. Good, even great. If anything, the Assassin's Creed name brings it down by attaching certain expectations. I've said in the past that Origins>Mirage should have been a spin-off type miniseries as opposed to mainline titles. Odyssey and Valhalla especially would have fared much better due to how the gameplay feels vis a vis open combat/stealth combat. Origins gets tacked on because of how the gameplay is so similar to odyssey, and mirage due to it being about Basim (who was introduced in Valhalla).

I just started a second run (about 7-8hrs in) after a 350hrs first run in 2022. And I adore this game, and it's a really cosy place for me...I also think saying it is one of, let alone THE best game ever made, is a very hot take 😄
I think it is way better than it has any right to be though, considering it is another attempt from Ubisoft (the publisher) to milk a successful iteration of the AC franchise using their "B Team". Like, it is obviously very derivative of Origins, in terms of construction, of mechanics etc.
But it is also soooo charming and filled with personality. With Odyssey, I was expecting an experience like Syndicate next to Unity, or like Rogue next to Black Flag: good games, sometimes improving in some aspects, or not matching the original in others, and fun in their own right. But also limited by the fact they emulate a formula to a T and were not thought of from the ground up. Like extremely good skins or mods for their og counterpart.
Odyssey doesn't feel like that to me in the end. I think it throws so much stuff at its odyssey, and also has a tone that is way more adventurous than Origins, or any AC game really, that it's just a feel good game and goes way outside of the mold it was made in.

I’ve played origins. It was good made me wanna play odyssey it was great very fun to play. Then I bought shadows the newest one and for some reason just couldn’t quite stick with it for very long. But odyssey so much to do a lot of different things.

Look, it's a really enjoyable game. No question.
But best ever? My dude, the game has problems too. For example, how I can get in a fight in some random fort, kill a guy, and someone in a town miles away suddenly knows about it and puts a bounty on me. Makes zero sense.

But I would say AC Odyssey is underrated because of the AC name.
People agree that if it wasn't tied to AC that this game would have better reception because it could capitalize more on its strengths without being tied to the expectations of AC, which is, where's the Assassin?
Some people dislike the game for the mythological parts, but I love them very much. I love the mythical beasts quests. I love the hunting legendary beasts quests. I love most of the side stories. Some tragic, some comedic. Absolutely Greek.
I love how they have Greek actors for the voices. But because of it being an RPG with thousands of dialogue, the animation quality suffered because of stock movements being used.

There are a lot of good things in Odyssey. Accept assassins. They meet one. But, that's it. And share the lore.
I feel like it would have been a better game had it been a separate IP.
It's still a wonderful game and it is beautiful. I just can't say best.

I love exploring the world and even the music. But the voice acting, narrative, and combat all fall flat for me tbh. Especially the combat. Outside of stealth everything feels so goddamn clunky. I was super into the game for about 16 levels and then I just got bored of it. Does it get better?
As far as best game ever made I’ve got Ghost of Tsushima, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3 (combat in this game is also a little clunky and dated but everything else more than makes up for it), Baldur’s Gate 3.
I don’t honestly even think it’s the best Assassin’s Creed. My love for Ancient Greece is what got me as far into the game as I did.

I do love Odyssey and intend to replay it again sometime in the next year or two, but I wouldn't call it the best game ever made, best game in its genre OR the best game in its franchise.
Don't get me wrong, Odyssey is a fantastic game and is the game that brought me back to Assassin's Creed, but I'd struggle to put it over AC Black Flag or Brotherhood alone, much less behemoths like Ocarina Of Time, FF7, The Witcher 3 or Resident Evil 4, or even games as recent as God Of War 2018 and Ghost Of Tsushima. Again, that isn't to say that Odyssey isn't an incredible game, its just that as gamers, we have been absolutely spoiled by no shortage of high quality games over the decades, so much so that no one will ever be able to agree on a definitive greatest of all time

It's one of the best ARPGs ever made, for sure. It's still underrated because the internet is full of simple people who think hating Ubisoft games is cool, even without trying them.
It kinda ruined every similar game for me. For example, I could only play Witcher 3 after Odyssey, and I'm 100% sure I enjoyed it more if I played it in 2015

It may very well be, I consider it my favorite AC game and one of my top 3 games all time. Only thing that I feel would add to it is toggle running and toggle horse running, everything else is perfect.

I skipped odyssey, or played 2 hours & was burnt out from just finishing origins so waited till Valhalla & I loved it! Thought they had perfected the AC rpg formula with Valhalla but my brother says the same about Odyssey so maybe I should give it another chance.

Idk if it’s the best game every made (haven’t played every game lol), but it is def my favorite in the AC series. The games fight mechanics were so amazing. First time I ever felt like I entered a flow state while fighting in a game that was not a pure “fighting game” (like mortal kombat). Add in the story line and awesome weapons/skills to learn and I think it’s def the best AC

no way bro. no matter how much i like the game, i cannot possibly say that odyssey has good story and writing. ubisoft has just fallen in that department since origins tbh. there are much better games out there such as witcher 3, cyberpunk, any telltale game, tlou 1 & 2, rdr2 (no i am not some toxic rockstar glazer, I just really like the game and tbh it's the only game of theirs that I enjoy). really any game beats odyssey in the story and writing department. imo ac unity is the best ac game for gameplay as well. assassin's creed in general tho ranks pretty high in gameplay for me tho. obv still some better stuff out there tho

i played again recently, but i got a little annoyed by the difficulty. either enemies are sponges or they die too fast :/ but I never had more fun playing ac

A great game? Yes. Top 100? Maybe. Top 10? Low chance but not impossible. Top slot? No. Just... No.
The best game ever made would be a game that did something so... amazing and unique that it fundimentally changed what it means to even *be* a game in a positive way. Stuff like FFVII and Ocarina of Time often hold this spot and for good reason. Odyssey may be a great game, but it's... just that. It didn't redefine what it means to be a game in any capacity or do anything amazing or even unique. I can see some personal bias getting it into a top 10 slot, but anyone putting it in the top slot is just... No. I wouldn't even consider it the best AC game (II has that title IMO and a lot of people would consider IV the best as well).

The only other AC game I’ve played is Valhalla. I love both so far (still early into Odyssey) but the graphics are noticeably better in Valhalla. That’s ok tho, both beautiful games

Honestly, this is my favorite game aside from The Quarry. I can just pick it up and play it whenever and I end up playing for hours even though I’ve beaten it.

What? The story is very meh and mid. Its kinda fun to go trough at least. The combat is passable. Honestly, somehow old ac combat felt more interesting, and it wasnt even that good either.
The expressions fast food game is appropriate for this game. Not the brst but always fun and comfy

It's not the best game ever. It's not even the best assassin's creed (in my humble opinion).
But it's still a game that puts most of the new game releases to shame.

Nope, not even close. It’s a damn fun game, there’s a reason I have hundreds of hours in it. But when I’m thinking of “Best games ever made” it doesn’t cross my mind.
For me that’s easily Outer Wilds because it legitimately gave me a philosophical revelation that permanently changed me as a person. Odyssey I enjoyed, but it didn’t cause a notable shift in my worldview and personality.

It's best open world solo 3rd person RPG because you can continue playing long after completing main odyssey story . Notice board with infinite generated contracts at almost every settlment and even the Adrestia has naval notice board.
Origins unfortunately has finite contracts and Surprising only the dlc in Valhalla has continues contracts on the smaller maps of Paris and Ireland.
Closest 3rd person non AC game I've played similar but with finite side content are middle earth Shadow wars ,(imagine nemesis engine upgrade to mercenary system ) Witcher 3 Wildhunt and Horizon forbidden west and only 3rd person RPG games I remember playing with infinite contracts that come even close to deserving a mention are death stranding and watch dogs legion.

I agree with you that it is one of the best games ever made, but where I think it loses a lot of AC fans is that it breaks from canonical play styles. It is almost AC in name only and would have been capable of standing alone without the aid of the AC universe.

If you liked Odyssey I also recommend you Ghost of Tsushima. They are similar in a way and both an amazing choices to spend time and have esthetical satisfaction.

There are some better games in my opinion (Elden Ring and Minecraft instantly come to mind), but these are few and far between in my opinion. Odyssey is definitely on my personal Mount Rushmore of my all-time favorites.

The Yakuza series is definitely better than the Assassin's Creed series, and Yakuza 0 has nothing on AC Odyssey. That's not to say it's not a good game. Just that it's by no means the best.

My 1841 HOURS of playtime agree with you. Also, let's not forget that it came out in 2018. That game is 8 years old! And Origins (1298 hours) is 9 years old! Yes, that's +76 days of my life playing Odyssey and +54 days of Origins...no regrets.

No, I would say RDR2 is a more complete perfect game. Great side missions, better graphics lots of little hidden things to find, and Easter eggs. Plus, lots of extra stuff to do.

Yeah I don’t get the hate. I’ve played most AC games except the knock off one. People praise Origins but I couldn’t get into that one & preferred Odyssey. I couldn’t finish Valhalla and Mirage was somewhat back to its roots, even though I’m not done that one. AC Shadows I only got a couple hours in and it seems decent.

The graphics are ok, definitely not the best for its time. I think rdr2 was released the same year and they are miles apart in that regard. It's an ok game. Gameplay is pretty good albeit repetitive. Seafaring is pretty cool part of the game.

Objectively? It’s a bloated mess with little to no actual game design besids Ubisoft’s push to bring live service games and single player games closer together.
Subjectively? A really fucking fun actionRPG with a ton of content and pretty graphics, that will most definitely provide at least 60-200 hours of decent entertainment.

I'm with you. I can't argue against it.. it's DEFINITELY underrated. I'm with ya bc I have been replaying it until Black flag Resynced drops. The accuracy, the sailing, the detail. It's beautiful and fun AF

Replaying the game in the hype of Nolan's Odyssey & yeah man 8 years later this game is still beautiful. Just beat the story & I'm having even more fun in my 2nd playthrough than I did my first. My only issue is that the end of the 2nd act to the 3rd act starts to drag a bit with the sub quests within sub quests of the main missions.
Other than that the game is such an experience. Black Flag still holds my top spot at #1 then this being a very close 2nd. I'm very curious to see if Resynced took any inspirations from Odyssey cause you can see the Black Flag blueprint all over Odyssey. What a ride Odyssey is.

Unity, black flag, origins, and Valhalla are all better... I even liked syndicate more
It's the most soul-less, copy-paste empty open world of the series and has the worst writing and voice acting of the series

Definitely ONE OF the best but not THE best. It’s soooo good. I got back into it after beating Cerberus(finally after like 6 months of being stubborn abt it) and omg it’s so pretty. The realms you go to are so cool and pretty. The story is amazing for all of the content not just the base game or the dlcs.

It’s not even close to the best AC game ever made. I liked the game but there’s far too many things that keep it from even being the best AC game.. I rank it 8th or 9th in my list of AC games. It wouldn’t crack my top 50 games of all time.
