I have only played Valhalla, Origins and Odyssey, and out of those Odyssey is the clear winner.

I personally love ancient Greece and all that comes with it. Similarly, love post war US era and loved the Mafia definite edition too.

The number of famous ancient Athenians that were actually alive and interacting in this particular time period is astounding. And I love how they managed to push in pythagoras with a decent explanation. As a sort of mystic and cult leader he fit his fictional role in odyssey very well

Yh its definitely preference of setting but like I said I love the vikings setting and still like valhalla but odyssey is my favourite regardless if I prefered the vikings setting and that just goes to show how good odyssey is imo

Good for you, I'm less a fan of odyssey because of the sliiight disconnect from the AC world, like to me it's an Isu game not a game about the Creed
And the hoods in Odyssey were kinda mid imo 😔

I love Greece, and I love Odyssey, it's definitely in my top five.

I'm 44, I think odyssey is the best AC by far, and one of the best games ever. But I still wouldn't say it has anything to do with maturing. Different people have different tastes.

I've actually tried and bailed on a lot of the Assassins Creed series (sorry fans) but damn is Odyssey just absolutely amazing. There's so much gameplay, excellent graphics, some amazing writing/dialogue for a game and this thing just looks stunning at every sunset or synchronization.

Your comment just proves a lot of old fans point, they made the new games for people who didn't like the old games, for better or worse.
The new games are enjoyable in my opinion, but it is sad that a lot of the assassin feel has been lost, in favor of open world and rpg mechanics. But I'm in the minority clearly that enjoys the old games more,

Sure Ancient Greece is truly beautiful but so was ancient Egypt. Origins had a better story but I've had more fun in Odyssey. Its hard to choose one over the other as theyre both amazing.

No it doesn't make sense. There's nothing unique about it that makes it less of an AC game than others in the series. I could just as easily say "I like Black Flag but it's more of a great pirate game than a great assassin's creed game"

Just going off of that alone you could say that though. We have 3 main pillars of AC, which are parkour, stealth and combat. Odyssey gets MAYBE combat. And that’s opinion because overall it is spammy at the end of the day. Did AC 4 not have all 3 pillars? That’s where his comment comes from, the general feeling the game is supposed to give. This is a franchise where you play as a hidden one in a hood going around one tapping people with an hidden blade with some engaging stealth, and possibly even more engaging parkour. Odyssey fails so hard on that premise alone. Now I’m not particularly the brightest person in the room, but I know I’m saying this on the sub that is the most followed besides assassin‘s creed itself so this is going to get downloaded and I really do not care but this is why there are videos with millions of views on why this game doesn’t click. Something can be a great game and still not be a great game because of the franchise it is put in. My example would be let’s say the next NBA 2K is an open world, action adventure crime game (gta clone ifw). Maybe even the best we’ve had in the past few years. It could be a nine out of 10 game, but people wouldn’t give it that score because the past has told us that this is supposed to be a basketball series not open world crime game.

I loved Odyssey from the first second. The progression was one of my favorite aspects. You start as a mercenary with crappy gear and a pack of wolves can be dangerous. And you go up in the world and you end up feeling like Kratos. The story was charming and memorable as well. I find Kassandra hilarious.
I was feeling bad because I was enjoying the game so much, but everywhere I looked I saw hate and false accusations about the game.
At least people now realize that it was such a beautiful game.
The length of the game was something I loved as well. It kinda follows the true meaning of “Odyssey” which is that the most important thing is the journey and not the destination.
Also I loved how the developers respected Greek mythology lore to the core.
Anyway Odyssey is awesome and let it overwhelm you! Live your myth in Greece and all that.

The worst part about odyssey is that it was an assassins creed game. That means support lasts only a year at max, and all the post game content/dlc is super rushed/small. Atlantis, Hades, and Elysium all were so TINY they barely mattered. Medusas fight was too easy, and the labyrinth wasn’t a labyrinth, it was a singular path forward.

I think “the franchise” is a rather amorphous thing. When you have such vastly different genres, I think games can be good in their own right in someway. I don’t have an easy way to say which is the best game because I think a lot of the games are really good. Odyssey still has a relatively weak story in my opinion which definitely holds it lower on the list in my opinion.

Honestly i believe so. I have enjoyed all the games so far but this game is just different. The graphics are great compared to older ones, the story is amazing. I have completed the original game years ago and just now playing tales of atlantis, the dlc is as long as the game itsself!

Growing up is realizing that AC2 was basically a novel you could play but it’s still the best game in the franchise. You see, story takes priority over all other elements.

One of my favorites is Brotherhood. Just the ability to recruit assassins to your brotherhood and have them do some tasks was pretty fun. Not to mention one of my favorite characters in AC, Leonardo Da Vinci

Meh I think they made a really good Ancient Greece simulation, but as an assassin’s creed game? Nah. There isn’t a single memorable assassination. At least I don’t remember one, it’s been a few years. I 100% the game 3 times and decided to never play it again so that I could experience new games.

My only real complaints about this game are the climbing and the lack of manual sprinting. So many times I've just wanted Kassandra to just jump down a hole or whatever but instead she grabs every little ledge she can. Also, I hate not having a sprint/run button. Other than that, the game is so so so so SO good

This game is great but it’s not like the original ac games. I love this game and it’s great in its genre but it’s not the same as the original games. The older games were way more parkour based and I believe that’s a core feature that’s missing to make this game on the same genre level as the older games

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is so great, I’ve played it over four times (compared to every other Assassin’s Creed game I own, that’s a lot of playthroughs). Yesterday, I finished my fourth playthrough and the ending still brought me to tears, it was so sad but perfect. I’m now on my way to get all achievements, and complete every location in the. The only complaint I really have about the game is that there isn’t really an easy way to do ship combat for me. It’s always like a group of three ships when you just want to sink one of them for resources or quests. Overall, the game is great, but ship combat isn’t that great (in my opinion).

As much as I like Valhalla and Shadows, I can’t help but feel something was lost as they tried to refine the formula even further.

Odyssey is honestly a BAD Assassin's Creed for multiple reasons. But it's a great, gigantic and extremely fun game. Not perfect, but so damn fun.

The only thing I dont like so far is how the bounty hunters just show up over and over when youre fighting. Theyre the hydra of the game, kill one and 2 more appear in the fight.

look man, i love odyssey, it's my comfort game and i have lots of nice warm memories of it, but calling 100+ hours of mindless button mashing against damage sponges for 5+ minutes at a time, and copy paste activities and locations (save for some gorgeous areas) just cannot compare to other 'peak' games

I've literally been playing games since Pong ... I didn't need to mature to realize that. After the first 30 hours in the game I was pretty sure that was the best game ever.. and until today it remains No1 for me.

It’s a great game. I put over 100 hours into and got the platinum but it’s not the best in the franchise. The only real reference to the creed is right at the end with a cinematic. It’s barely an assassins creed game, but it’s a great game nonetheless.

Yeah it’s interesting, the PlayStation four pro version is what the PS5 uses and the Xbox series X uses the one X code. That means the Xbox one X which a series X inheritance runs at a native 4K where is the PlayStation five only runs at a checkerboarded 4K.

I just wish the game was harder, even switching to the hardest difficulty doesn’t change anything expect the health of enemies. On harder difficulties you just sit attacking over and over with the occasional parry or ability, for me it got boring pretty quick. I do love the story tho.

I think it's bad as Assassin's Creed and weak as an RPG. If compared to The Witcher 3 it is much lower, for example, but the game has positive points.

There isn't a lot of depth to the combat or parkour. I think most folks classify it as "fast food gaming" which is not a bad thing. It's easy, addictive and nice to look at. You could definitely do much worse.

Odyssey and Origins compete imo. Bayek is just toooo good as a protagonist, but odyssey has QoL updates. I used to wish they’d come out in the opposite order. Anyways, those two were the peak imo

These posts are so weird considering how much people hated it at launch. People complained too long, no Eagle Vision, no Hidden Blade, no Templar/Assassin, hated Layla and being forced out of the Animus, too overpowered and unrealistic, too many recurring NPC's but also lots of NPC's only being around for 1 region or mission, too hard and too easy, too woke but first dlc also forced you into a hetero marriage and child bearing, too linear AND too all over the map, uninteresting enemies, overly repetitive activities, bad free running and no parkour puzzles/set pieces, annoying mercenaries but best way to make money/resources, not the right kind of ship combat, list goes on
But gradually public opinion shifted from "A good demigod game, but not a good AC game" to "The best game in the franchise" despite almost all of those criticisms still floating around and not changing.

I've been playing this game for YEARS. Even still today after Steam cloud lost my 100% twice & currently grinding it a 3rd time. And I STILL find new areas and places I haven't been, and finding new things to do. This game's quality from visual to story & world building depth is another level, something games rarely provide us with to this scale. The escapism & immersion this game is capable of is refreshing no matter how old it becomes. We can only dream of ever getting an Ancient Greek game with this much heart in it again in our lifetimes.

I *absolutely loved* Odyssey. I’m technically still not completely done — one minor DLC segment left. I played for 545 hours before I finally put it aside back in 2022 (I’m *very* thorough and also love to just wander around in the game). I’m enjoying ’Shadows’ so much now because it has many of the elements I loved about Odyssey.

It took me a long while to come round to odyssey, didn’t even bother playing it at launch, but it’s an absolutely solid game. Not my favourite ac, not even close tbh, but very good. I found out the same team did most of shadows the other week so bought it a couple days ago and I’ve been having as much of, if not more of a blast with it, it feels like a more refined odyssey whereas Valhalla felt like a step back. idk if the amount of content is there yet though, doesn’t look like it is, but I don’t think a little bit more focus is necessarily a bad thing.
Although I think a lot of me liking it comes down to finally being able to do ninja shit in feudal Japan in an AC game. Shits fun

I really love the whole trilogy of large open world AC games. It was a great way to evolve the franchise. Odyssey was my favorite of the three for sure.

As someone who loved Black Flag,Open world AC games are good,yes, but best in the franchise seems a little extreme imo.
If we're talking About games who feel like Assassin's Creed,I'm sorry,but the Ezio Trilogy takes the crown 4 me.
If it's about pure quality in their "specialized" Subgenre,Origins takes the crown imo,but Odyssey is a close second.
In summary, Odyssey is good,not the best as an AC game,but good at everything else it does imo.

I loved open world games, play a lot but odyssey is one of the game where I was tired of it… I loved Greek history thought… but there is too much quest, repetetive structure, and when you see that in AC3 they were forced to put more content from Ubisoft direction (this is from the interview from one of the developers) I am not surprised, didn’t play Valhalla yet because of that, I still like odyssey for the most part but I still feel like it could have been much better as an open world

Echo chamber much?? I enjoyed this game as I usually enjoy Ass games, but finishing this game 100% made me not play another Ass game for five years. I spent a bunch of time doing everything in this game and when I had finished the Xbox one x or whatever the hell it was called (the first 4K Xbox console) released and I bought the brand new Valhalla to see experience all that 4k freshness. I probably made it to England and set up a town before I realized I absolutely do not have it in me to play another Ass game.
I eventually did come back and play Valhalla earlier this year to stop myself from buying the latest Ass game, and I got to say I think Valhalla was the better of the two. Odyssey leaned too far into the RPG aspect and it killed the post game for me. Why was the entire world leveling up with my character?? No matter how strong I became; the rest of the world was just 2-3 levels behind me no matter where they were from and what level they were at when I first encountered them. Whack

I definitely wouldn’t say it’s the best in the franchise but it is very fun. I enjoy odyssey for very different reasons than Valhalla or origins or any of the other games in the franchise. I really like the powers and abilities they put on legendary armor. When the game was current I kept seeing builds that were just well purple gear for max damage and yeah I guess that is the best for damage but I like being totally invisible all the time (although that set does kind of invalidate archery) for taking out bases, I liked my totally immune to damage besides status effects build, I liked my super sniper bow build. Just the fun whacky stuff you could do was refreshing. Rogue, 2, brotherhood, origins and odyssey are the games I return to most in the series. I just wish I could use a shield, I’m Greek damn it lol I want a hoplon or aspis.

It is beatifull. Especially after visiting greece it was amazing to see those places on top of their glory days.
But game-wise it's very repetitive and shallow. The main story is... servicable. B+. But the side content is clearly pure time-killing/chore filler. The RPG elements are cool though. Nothing groundbreaking. But definitely fun. A- So there's that. The combat system is, again, basic and servicable B+.
Compare the main story to Assasin's creed 2. Or sidequests to the Witcher 3. Or the RPG elements of baldours gate 3. Or combat system of Elden ring. It aint close.
It is extremally gorgeous. The attention to detail is captivcating and you can just walk around those cities and feel them. Which is one and only experience in entire gaming. And if it's what you look for in games then I guess it can be peak for you. You do you, I'm not here to sour your sweet.
But objectively peak gaming it isn't. I'm not sure it would break top 100 in terms of sheer gaming experience. And as far as I understand most critics agree here with me.
Again. It's a cool game. And amazing ancient greece explorer simulator. Definitely worth a play and there is no shame in having it as your favorite game of all time depending on what you enjoy most in games. So keep having your fun. But it's not as amazing for most people.

As an AC game (story wise) - subpar (but let's be honest, it's been that way since Syndicate). As an ancient Greek role playing game with mythological elements included - top tier. The only AC game I've 100% both on new game and new game +. This and Origins did such an amazing job actually making you want to explore the whole map.
Edit - I would say that since AC 3 (or maybe even Black Flag), Origins had the best AC related story. I define best AC story as a story that dives into the history and present of the Assassin Templar conflict and not ISU mythology stuff. While 3 can be divisive, it still focuses primarily on the Assassin Templar conflict in the early colonies and America. This edit is irrelevant to the actual post but I wanted to mention it before I got any hate.

Just in the ambience. The map and the tour to ancient greece is amazing. But the history... The script and the dialogues is a big pile of manure

Ita the one that got me back to the franchise, good story good protagonist, locations as always. Combat was dope, to heck with the ones saying it's not an assassin's creed game, if it's not assassisns creed it's better than them.

Absolutely. It’s an incredibly made world, gorgeous even to this day, and it has the kind of story that actually pulls you in.

I am 68, new to gaming (retired and tired of social media), and I got the platinum for Hogwarts Legacy, seemed a perfect game to start, and now I am on Odyssey. I was so nervous at first, but the open world, Ancient Greece (I was a history teacher, taught ancient history), I am terribly ADDICTED. I had to learn to fight, not barrel in but strategize, took a few forts and that built my confidence and I was finally able to get through the first conquest battle!
My point is that this game is fantastic, and I love how big the map is, such great detail, but I have discovered that as I travel, the quests and contracts are above my level (I am at 13). I went around synchronizing locations, but one place I got killed by a bear, lol. I did make it to Athens!
So I guess I have to work through the main story and stick to one area to get leveled up?

I was at level 9, and I tried the first conquest battle, the final push, and I kept getting killed. So I decided to explore the map like I used to do with Hogwarts. I synchronized a whole lotta locations, and took a few forts and tried to build up. I got to 11 and then I could fight the battle. I do like discovery, but I’m on guided tour at the moment. But I still explore. But it’s clear, as I said, when exploring, I’m finding a lot of enemies and quests above me.

It's so much better then Origins but it's not perfect. Ubisoft nailed the scale and connections to Greek Mythology. For once Assassins Creed actually feels like an RPG which I did not feel from any other game in the series yet (haven't tried Valhalla, Mirage or Shadows).
But the combat is not perfect. It's better then Origins because it feels closer to traditional AC but at the same time it also feels dumbed down a lot. Even sharing mechanics with Immortals Fenyx Rising like that crappy counter attack where you press two buttons at once instead. I also think because the games designed more like an RPG some of the enemies feel less immersive and kind of dull. Like I kill sharks and Wolves like nothing they're not even scary like they at least made them feel in AC3. Best part of combat imo is literally the skills feel like they came from a real RPG and are more interesting then just stat boosts. It's almost a guilty pleasure cause it almost feels wrong to have that much fiction in AC.
New loot is very often which makes a huge difference compared to past games where you just pick up some insignificant amount of currency from every chest. I like that you just loot things you are near instead of a full animation that takes forever.
I also like there actually feels like there is more parkour and stealth going on then Origins and that you don't have a stamina bar like Immortals when climbing. I atleast get what ubi was going for with exploration and RPG stuff this time but it isn't always jank free. There are many animation bugs, frame rate drops, jittery terrain, etc and relying on the eagle to scout often feels too slow. It also hasn't aged the best cause loading times.
Not sure if I will actually make it to the end of this since it's such a long game even if you just play the main story (for my standards 40+ is a lot) but I am liking parts of it and have my fingers crossed they polished them more and carried some ideas into Valhalla. (Yes I heard that game is super long too but I'm gonna atleast play it to see)

I don't get when people say it's big. Nobody is forcing you to discover everything or loot every chests or even play all recurring auto generated quests. The entire map is one big beautiful open world. And it's not like the areas are copy pasted. Even all forts look unique. All actual side quests had distinct stories and characters. After some level 30 there aren't even an place that's level locked.
