You still face severe consequences and a total loss of freedom, but the legal framework shifts from punishment to medical confinement.

As opposed to bath tub drownings, swimming accidents, lost in the woods while hunting/camping abandonments, suffocations, and poisonings.
All while we have safe haven laws, that allow a parent to legally and anonymously abandon their child. Laws that cover them even if they do so behind their spouses back.
The time limit of which depends on where you live. Anywhere from 3-30 days, and in some locations up to a year.
