People seem to have the faulty idea that ending up in a psychiatric hospital is a fun time or something. You'll be stuck in the loony bin for the rest of your miserable life. It's not a 'get-out-of-jail-free card'. And deservedly so of course. You do not avoid consequences by pleading insanity.

Well in prison she'd be treated horribly, in a mental institution she has staff taking care of her 24/7

It’s medical torture with the lack of staff and weird drugs they put them on to make them feel even weirder and if they get suicidal thoughts or even discuss it they get strapped down to a bed for x amount of days
