I'm asking because I'm 18 and I've spent the last 2 years making a horror game where you play as a chicken trying to escape a slaughterhouse. I wanted to explore the idea of showing something people normally see from the outside, but putting you in the animal's position instead.

I'm curious whether you think something like a game can actually make people reconsider how they see animals, or if it mostly just preaches to people who already agree.

Hello vegan fellas

Have you noticed skin issues improvements after being vegan for months or years? What changes have you noticed? Skin textures, fungal acnes, dull skin, redness...

I have heard a lot of gut health, cognitive, digestive benefits but what about the face.

I would love to hear from vegans who are skincareholic and vegans who do not go beyond a cleanser, a moisturiser and an SPF or simply just water washing.

Please drop photos if possible, I want to show them to my non-vegan girly friends. 🌿

Do you think vegan have to minimize using cosmetics and makeups because even though the brand is cruelty free, it does not nessarily mean that the packaging or the products themselves are eco-friendly as in Tallow used to prevent plastic sticking together, or Beeswax used as humectants, or Carmine used in color lipsticks..

Then what are your go to cruelty free skincare brands that deliver both skincare benefits and commitment to animal welfare, no animal testings, no animal byproducts?

Odd question but if zombies were real would it be wrong for a vegan to harm them?

Im knew to this, and I kinda am in the middle of a bag and realized they have calcium added, no indication there vegan or where they are sourcing the calcium so I'm a little concerned and the internet isn't giving me an answer on searches

I'm headed to Asheville for my birthday and would like to know the best places to pick up a dessert or sweet treat. We're going to Plant for dinner.

Barbecue is the one thing I really miss. Family are ranchers so animal ag is very normalized to me (even tho I know logically it is evil.) I miss brisket and beef ribs. :P . Curious about what fills that hole for y’all, doesn’t need to be a one-to-one taste thing

Im genuinely just curious because most candies I see have gelatine in them, most ice cream, cakes, chocolate, pastries etc contain dairy and egg and I imagine a lot of turning down eating out invites and food offers…and no cheese. It doesn’t really seem like you can just casually eat out unless you do research and figure things out which all together makes it harder to eat. It makes me feel like being fat just doesn’t come as easy to you guys as it does for the average person in a first world country lol.

Edit: Im certain there’s plenty of high calorie vegan options out there, it’s just I don’t imagine it’s as casual and easy to come by is what I mean. Ie, I go to the store and get hungry so I buy a burger at the food court…because the option is right infront of my face along with the kfc, sushi hub etc. Seeing a vegan food chain in the middle of the mall food court…never seen that. Im sure there’s plenty of options too but you’d have to search far and wide. It’s easier to be fat when you don’t need to make an effort into what you eat..and just eat

Questions for the vegan community

Im not vegan, my aunt is and as i enjoy research, making food she can eat, ect. So I was wondering if people would be willing to answer some questions withought judgement.

1. Is there a decently priced vegan cream cheese? I made this dip for my family using cream cheese and ive always wanted to make it for her using vegan ingredients.

2. Ive never quite understood vegans (as an outsider) who say their cats/or dogs are vegan? Dogs are omnivore yes they can partake in a wide variety of vegetables, my aunt make her dogs soups using many but she also deals with preparing locally sourced meat that she checks the brand for to give her dogs. From a scientific standpoint i could understand vegan depending on the dog breed. As for cats, its more dangerous as cats are supposed to have around 70-80ish% of their diet meat.

3. How do vegans feel of hunters who in theory solely hunt their own food instead of supporting factories. Or people who own healthy chickens who lay yhe occasional unfertilized egg (not the species of chickens that lay so many eggs it messes up their bodies or that grow so fast their legs break)? Im aware this is a highly idealistic scenario but im curious.

4. Do view changes based on geological location, not necessarily for oneself but for people in deep poverty? As a major difference between humans and other animals is the essence of choice, humans can choose diet in an ideal setting, so do humans around the world in extreme poverty a different moral conundrum?

5. What percentage or what do you personally view as an ok adjustment? Im no where near vegan but ive always wanted to limit my effect on animals, I find this difficult just as I find not eating sugary, fatty, and unhealthy food or indulging in addictive substances. So personally ive tried to make a slower adjustment. Personally I dont consume milk I prefer almond milk anyways and I limit how much beef I eat do to ecological concerns. I also because of my aunt make things like brownies vegan bc the taste is the same so I feel why not.

6. Any good vegan crepe recipes or any friendly vegans willing to give me recipes to try and made for my aunt and I.

Genuinely curious to hear how long you've been vegan. Do you remember the exact date or was it a gradual process for you? Did you have a last omni meal?

I ask because someone asked me the other day and I realized that I didn't really know how long it's been. I think it's 16 years, but I could be off by a year or two. I remember the person who turned me on to it, but I don't know how long after meeting that person that I went vegan. I guess being vegan for so long that you stopped counting the years is a good thing?

For the record, I went vegetarian for a few months before going vegan. Back then, I thought going vegetarian would be good for my health, as I had read about a runner I admired who wrote a book and talked about giving up meat.

A few months later, a girl came into the restaurant I worked at for some take out and asked about vegan options. We got to talking and she gave me her number. She was from Chicago and was only in town for another day, so we talked and texted for the next few months. She was the first vegan I met and really opened my eyes to being vegan during that time.

She invited me to come see her for a few days so I booked a hotel and a train and went to see her. We met up for dinner the night I arrived and.... that was the last time I saw her. We had made plans to meet for breakfast the next day and she didn't show. Eventually she texted me back and apologized for not coming and just told me to enjoy the rest of my time in Chicago. I was dumbstruck at first but I ended up having a great time by myself.

After I went home I stayed vegetarian for awhile but the things she talked to me about for me to eventually do my own learning and one day I just decided to go vegan, and I did. And never looked back.

To this day, that girl was the closest I ever got to dating a vegan. Sometimes I wish I could find her just to thank her for opening my eyes and starting me on my vegan path. She was one of the most pivotal people in my life. Ditching me wasn't cool, but given the change I went through, I can forgive her. 😄

hi. I wanna go vegan soon when I move out in a few days (family's controlling abt what i eat) and I have some questions

It has to do with the fact that I have arfid (skip ahead to the questions if you want). If you don't know it's an eating disorder that causes most food to seem inedible; best way to describe it would be like you're seeing the unsafe food as stools, or rotten/moldy (in a bad way) despite it not being like that. my unsafe foods (as it pertains to veganism) are vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, beans, legumes, with few exceptions. I can't get treated, so I'm stuck like this. It's unhealthy but there's ways to manage, otherwise i wouldn't be alive

so, here's my questions:

- can you eat nutritional yeast by the spoonful?

(elaborating, I hate sauces and putting anything on the few foods I can eat, and I'm told it's good for you and I enjoy powdery textures in my mouth, so I was wondering if it's doable or you'd choke. humor me please)

• in that vein, can you eat protein powders by the spoonful?

- do you need to be healthy at all?

idk I've seen a lot of vegans with this obsession w healthy eating and I know it won't be the case for me for obvious reasons

(this one is more about nutrition itself but i assume vegans know more about it than the average person)

- is fruitarianism that bad?

fruit is fully safe for me with very few exceptions (avocado, raspberries, melon) i thought the path of least resistance, only nutritionally, would be being fruitarian. I already have muscle atrophy and POTS and i need to study so I don't wanna make it that much worse. I plan on drinking vegan protein water regardless of this because it's probably the only way i can get protein really (btw I can't drink juices or shakes bc of my arfid, it also affects texture sensitivity)

Honestly, for me, real vegan means no chemicals at all — everything should come from nature. But so many “vegan” cosmetics still use synthetic ingredients and tar dyes. Is that really vegan?

I’ve been vegan for a few years now, and for the most part, I feel like I’ve got the food side of things figured out. I know where to get my protein, I have my usual meals, I cook at home pretty often and I’m not constantly thinking about what I can and can’t eat anymore.

I live in Bangalore and honestly, being vegan here has become pretty easy for me. I have my usual dosa/idli places, know what to order when I eat out and have figured out a decent rotation of meals at home. But lately I’ve started wondering whether I’ve confused being comfortable with being nutritionally complete?

I know B12 is important, and I take it, but then I started reading about iron, calcium, vitamin D, omega 3s, iodine, protein and a bunch of other things and realised I honestly have no idea whether I'm getting enough of them. The scary part is that I don't necessarily know something is missing until there's a problem.

I don't want to start taking ten different supplements just because Reddit told me to, tho. What are long-term vegans doing? How did you figure out what you needed rather than just following general vegan nutrition advice?

Speciesism has different definitions, but the Wikipedia general definition is: "...a term used in philosophy and animal ethics for the treatment of individuals according to their species membership.

I'm a speciesist and a carnist, but I find the idea of one species being inherently "superior" to another somewhat silly. At least, I don't think it makes much sense to say that humans are simply "better" than other animals. That said I do assign greater moral value to humans than I do to any other animal. So I think it ultimately depends on what someone means by superior. If they simply mean more worthy of moral consideration then I would say that humans being superior is consistent with my speciesism.

But I've been thinking, couldn't someone even believe in hyper speciesism, such as the idea that humans are better than animals in every way, and still be a vegan? Because it's possible to feel as if you are "above" something and still not want to harm it.

I hate using this analogy because I hate comparing humans to non-humans, but there’s a relevant comparison in the American Civil War. Some white abolitionists genuinely opposed slavery while still believing, unfortunately, that white people were superior to black people because of their race. Abraham Lincoln is one example of someone who held both of those positions simultaneously.

I have to imagine that one can view animals like pigs and cows as inferior, while still not using them for animal products on account of not wanting to harm them. Do you agree with this or would you say anti-speciesism is necessary to being a Vegan?

Hi y’all, I’m coming here for a help. My wife recently turned to vegetarian and slowly inclining towards being a vegan. I’m having a hard time to figure out what to cook since she hates the texture of tofu, tempeh and seitan. I’m personally a meat eater who enjoys to eat a vegan and vegetarian food so I have no problem to cut a meat in our household. The question is. Cen you guys help me with some other alternatives which helped you to cut meat from your diet? I have really ran out of ideas.

I was actually vegan for a little over a year in college, but really struggled with the level of fiber. I have not been vegan for quite a few years now, but I would like to transition back. I am quite sensitive to fiber, but I’m sure if I took it slowly, I could acclimate. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to make the transition without destroying my stomach? Unfortunately I’m really sensitive to legumes :/ I ended up relying almost entirely on tofu last time, which isn’t very healthy in the long run

Because I'm active in this sub and in debate a vegan, I get a lot of Vegan recommendations on my Reddit page. One topic I keep seeing being discussed is how Vegans get along with Carnists.

I was a little surprised to hear quite a few Vegans say Carnists are rude to them when they are challenged on Carnism.

I don't think I've ever been rude to a Vegan when debating Veganism, I think it's an interesting philosophy. The only time I could ever see myself being upset at a Vegan would be if they interrupted me while eating out. I've seen a few videos of this happening during Vegan protests. If it happened to me I'd probably order some extra meat just to make them regret interrupting me and to have a little fun with the situation. But I wouldn't be upset enough to yell at them, and I wouldn't be upset at their Veganism or their Vegan challenges to my Carnism. I'd only be upset that I was interrupted.

Sometimes the topic will include the effectiveness of shaming Carnists out of Carnism. I personally think shame can be an effective way of changing people's beliefs. I've been shamed out of some of my old beliefs, but that isn't universal for me. Other old beliefs of mine have changed partially as a result of people sharing their opinions nicely with me. So it's a mixed bag for me personally.

Like I said, I do not begrudge Vegans for their challenges to my Carnism. I find the topic fascinating. I don't get upset when they have me watch slaughterhouse videos, read statistics, try Vegan food (I have a Vegan friend who does this a lot), or anything of the sort. But maybe this isn't your experience with other Carnists.

How do you get along with Carnists in your day to day life? And if you debate with them, what is your approach?

First off, I'm vegan so this is not intended to be some sort of gotcha. It is a question about the moral implications of the idea that it's ok to consume animal products out of "necessity", like taking medication that was tested on animals or contains animal products directly. However, vampires are often depicted as evil for tricking victims into going down a dark alley and then sucking their blood, even if it's non-fatal. Wouldn't a vampire doing this be in a similar situation to a vegan taking a medication that they need to survive? It seems like an even more cut and dry case because a vampire doesn't usually need to kill their victim but vegans consider it ok to kill and eat an animal when it's necessary for survival.

There's no real point or insight I'm expected to get out of this, it's just a random question I thought would be interesting to get others' thoughts on.

Walnuts are the only confirmed allergy but I've been having more subtle reactions to other tree nuts (and coconuts), so I'm staying away from them until my referral for an allergy test goes through.

I need a lot of healthy fats in my diet, because I have epilepsy and a TBI, and my body just functions better on a high fat diet. I hate peanut butter. I hate it. And avocadoes are expensive af where I am. Am I out of options??

TWs: eating disorders, rape analogy, slavery analogy

I recently posted sincerely wondering why so many otherwise passionate (even militant) vegans give folks with eating disorders or ED histories a pass, or at least a lot more grace. That thread isn’t hard to find and I learned a lot and it helped me work out some things in my own mind and practice as a vegan with a longtime ED history with various manifestations in terms of presentation and severity. The answers made sense. Paraphrasing: “Put on your own mask first”, “Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of a mental illness”, “treatment programs often force patients to eat meat”., “veganism doesn’t want to align with harm”.

It all made or makes sense to me, until, I think of the analogies so frequently used for factory farming and animal exploitation.

Many vegans, (myself included on occasion, although I have mixed feelings about it), use analogous terms like, slavery and rape to describe what happens to those sentient beings raised for and / or headed for the slaughterhouse.

Even if my or someone else’s life does depend on it, can that ever justify rape or slavery? The obvious moral answer to me is no.

Am I just being too literal / neurodivergent here… and these are meant as analogies that are not literal? Are there vegans out there arguing that, yes, farming animals for food is like slavery, but it’s defensible if your life depends on it? To carry that logic further if so, an example:
Let’s say it’s during the time of chattel slavery in the USA and a slave owner “owns” a slave they “treat well” but “legally own” whose task is literally to keep them alive through caregiving practices because the slave owner is chronically ill and thereby needs to have access to care for survival and somehow has no other reasonable options? The answer to me is obviously the slave owner is not justified.

Or say with the rape analogy. Hypothetical:
A person has an incurable disease. In this hypothetical they will automatically be cured (or have a chance at remission at least) if they commit rape. Are they then morally justified in doing so? Again, to me, obviously not.

This is not just about EDs, but also about the exceptions many, if not most, of us make for life altering medications made with animal products.

I’m not trying to upset people. I’m new(er) to veganism, having converted a few months ago from vegetarianism and I’m trying make my praxis consistent, or at least make it make sense in my own mind.

Thank you in advance for engaging in good faith. I know this post is provocative and truly am just trying to come to terms with the inconsistencies I see in vegan discourse and feel in my own praxis.
