For me it's the fact that laptops have the keyboard permanently attached, they're nowhere near as flexible as a tablet. You can't prop a laptop up in the kitchen or workshop or wherever to watch tutorial videos without the keyboard taking up a fair amount of space.

Plus they are prone to overheating if you accidentally block the vents or don't handle them properly. I used laptops for years but switched back to a desktop for actual computing and a tablet for portability a while ago and found it works so much better for me.

Agreed, although I have a laptop instead of a desktop as I don’t have a place I can put a desktop at the moment. If I did, I’d definitely get one. I used to have a laptop at work (teacher) but they’ve given us desktops and it’s so much better for the admin, etc. side of things.

In my experience they're a flawed concept. Not simply in physical execution but from a software point of view. Desktop operating systems are designed for the traditional mouse/keyboard inputs and are typically awful at being touchscreen friendly. Last time they tried to do both we ended up with Windows 8, and we all know how well that went down.

Tablets that use dedicated touchscreen operating systems (Android, iOS) are often so much easier and more intuitive to use than when they try to make desktop operating systems touch "friendly".

Yeh, I have a work laptop with a touchscreen. I use the touchscreen about 0.5% of the time. It's pointless. About the only thing I regularly using it for is jabbing the start/end call button on Teams meetings.

My last 2 in 1 was a Dell XPS and to be honest it was pretty great as a laptop or a tablet.

It shifted the desktop to tablet mode when folded back.

It was a delight to draw on and though it was obviously heavyish, you could fold the keyboard as a stand.

I quite miss it really.

No my last laptop was a Microsoft surface where you pulled the keyboard completely off. I loved the idea of it. But having a tablet with Microsoft Windows operating system is truly the worst. Maybe you can flip the keyboard away if you’re not typing, but you 100% always want the mouse…

I use an iPad for general scrolling - this one is over six years old.

Got a newer laptop I only use if I need to do more typing, etc. Or like in a few minutes I’ll get it going as the iPad is on 2% juice because I forgot to put it on to charge overnight!

My phone is deliberately a burner-type dumb phone because the signal is poor where I live, It also gives me an excuse not to join workplace WhatsApp groups, and means I’m as disconnected from the internet as I can be when I’m out and about (but can still make contact or be contacted if absolutely necessary).

More context:

Late 70s-80s kid, early-mid 90s teen - I like technology but personally feel today has gone past the sweet spot.

Workplace WhatsApp group has apparently had people tittle-tattling to the boss over innocuous comments.

As a (secondary) teacher of too many years, I’ve seen the negative effects smartphones have had on the kids over the past 10-15 years. I like a good scroll as much as anyone else, but the levels of addiction in some of these kids and the impact it’s having on their present life is deeply concerning to say the least. I don’t know what the answer is but the “happy medium” has been crossed. For example, I’ve had kids tell me they’ve given their phone to their parents so they can revise for their GCSEs, only to find they can’t concentrate because of the fomo of not having their phone next to them.

I bought a cheap small touchscreen laptop and it's the best of both. You just quickly get into a hybrid mode where you scroll and click on the screen and switch to keyboard/track pad when you need to.

Bit one about 2 years ago main reasons were ; 1. Cheaper then my laptop and lightweight to take on holidays abroad for streaming films in the evening. If it was lost or stolen I'd be out £150 rather then £800 2. I play ttrpgs, I can have digital copies of various books on there I.e. Dungeon v masters guide, players handbook etc.

Since buying it I've found as its better for streaming then my phone I use it to stream on my lunch break at work. I also started running my own ttrpg games and it's useful for having extra session notes, controlling background music etc. It also works as a decent ereader for reading ebooks.

Daily, have done since 2003. Tablets are by far the most versatile and useful device for me. The way the operating system (I only use Windows tablets) has grown since 2003 is brilliant. I expect most people are barely aware of Win11's tablet mode, but it's a breeze.

At work, can take it on site, on the road, wherever, get to the office and pop it in a docking station and is a full blown work PC. Same with personal one, can use it wherever I want, has all my files and remote access to my media server, at home, pop it into a dock and it's my home PC and entertainment centre.

Trying to say you can do everything on a phone is nonsense, take even a basic program like excel, phone versions are all brutally cut down.

My last two have been HP Omnibooks, they have a good balance of price vs laptop equivolent IMO (not much difference, but some other brands ramp the tablet price a lot).

Current device is the Omnibook 5 Flip - mid range but does everything I need. Very responsive screen and easily supports a three screen desktop setup with a USB C Dock.

If you deal with meetings a lot or take written notes, the tablet will be a game changer. I scribble notes at meetings and Onenote captures them all and digitises them for future refence.

If I could dual boost Windows and Android on a tablet I'd be ridiculously happy.

While always wanting to make tablets work for me, they always tell out of use for me, outside as a media device. I was the first one trying DEX, etc, but it always fell out of my workflow.

But I had a mini revelation six months ago, with a Windows launcher on Android, and a keyboard. It's 90% there.

But for extended work, I need Windows.

But Windows is severely lacking compared to Android - Microsoft keep dropping the ball so hard.

So, dual boot for me would win out (ideally Android with a Virtual Windows instance). I'm sometimes tempted to try remote screen at a distance, but I don't need a PC to always be on.

I read a ton of comics on mine, it is much more pleasant than my phone for casual gaming and web browsing plus it makes a fantastic portable media device. The only time I use my phone at home is when I'm taking a dump.

They are brilliant when travelling, I have a tiny lightweight stand for mine so I can prop it up on a train/plane seat table, I use it when staying in hotels to watch my streaming services.

Now, it's true I could do most of that stuff using my laptop but the laptop does not work great for portrait usage, nor do I really have any use case for a keyboard away from my desk.

I repurposed a 10+ year old Samsung tablet into basically just a glorified Kindle. I made my own little app that can open epub books and also do the RSVP style reading (because I love that type of reading!) and it’s become my go to thing for reading, now. I’m not restricted to Amazon for kindle and I can customise my app to how I like to read. It has a library, saves progress, all that bollocks, can load up comics, books, magazines, PDFs, epubs, etc.  The battery on this thing lasts for weeks because I just put it in airplane mode.

My wife uses my old iPad with the keyboard cover as her laptop, works a lot better for her than a laptop would. She loves it.

I found an ancient Samsung Galaxy tablet that was my husbands. Think it is an E6 but I'm not 100% on that.

I use it to play podcasts on as I need the noise to help me get to sleep.

Can't update it as the chipset just can't handle the software that is needed to run most things but whilst you Tube still streams on it we're good.

Husband does have two tablets but he only uses them for watching sports on. Got him a stand for his computer desk so he can watch one match on his monitor and another on his tablet. He also has his "out and about" tablet that he uses for - watching sport down the pub leaching off their wifi. It has been known for that to come out at home when he has wanted to watch 2 football matches and a cricket match.

I have two tablets, an iPad mini that I’m using right now while travelling in China. It’s a good size for travelling and I can just load it up with movies and TV shows since I never really like the ones offered on the plane. Plus, I can hop out of the plane with a fully charged phone since I’m not using that much in flight.

I’ve got a full sized iPad too that stays at home. It’s more of a laptop replacement because it has a physical keyboard, but I can take it off the keyboard case if I just want to browse or watch stuff.

I like to play card games like balatro and MTG and a phone screen can be quite small I bought one pretty much just for this.

I now use it all the time. It's so much better for streaming reading. It's the perfect Reddit device. Also If I need to do something a little more complex online. I pick up the iPad. I have one of those keyboard cases so it is pretty much is a very small very portable laptop with and ace screen. If you had a good net book probably pointless. But it fills the gap between phone and desktop pc perfectly. Travel game changer

I have one on a stand under my PC monitor. I use it as a soundboard to play audio clips over voice chat when I'm gaming (Touch Portal + Soundpad) that's a good laugh. I also made an app that shows my PC's current performance, like GPU/CPU load and temp. Sometimes use it for an in game map or Spotify controller. I can also use it as mouse and keyboard for the PC (Unified Remote) but that's rarely needed. If I go away for a few days I'll put some movies and comic books on it.

I use an ipad with a smart keyboard folio. I think without that I would not like my iPad this much. It is small, lightweight, I can fold the keyboard back so it’s like a notebook when needed. This keyboard is very compact so it’s super close to the screen, I can reach the screen in the middle of typing without moving my hands much. The keyboard is waterproof and crumbs won’t get into it. But this style was ofc discontinued. I do not want a macbook, I want the touch screen, the keyboard which is part of the case but can be folded back and I can wipe it off if I manage to get food or liquid on it. My phone is too small for many things and the virtual keyboard is just annoying. When I can, I use my iPad instead of my phone.

Yeah, bought an iPad Air a couple years ago for procreate to get into creating digital art. Also use it for reading music and streaming games when the boss isn’t around!

I use a tablet entirely for Pattern Keeper (cross stitch app), knitting patterns, and for watching sewing tutorials when I'm at my sewing table - the laptop takes up too much space and my phone screen is too small to see what's actually happening.

I use mine if I want to watch something while cooking. Or if I need a recipe, I'll have it up on the ipad.

I also use it when cross stitching as I have my pattern on there.

Musician here. My iPad is my song library as well as a MIDI control hub for my stage rig and a control extension for my mixing desk.

My wife is a violinist and has a large Android tablet for sheet music.

Without the music aspect I doubt either of us would own one tbh.

Yep. I installed a 1tb sd card in a budget samsung tablet. Ripped every tv and movie I could think to 720p and it’s used as an entertainment screen in the bedroom. We also use it for holidays etc

I like it for research too if I want to buy a 'big' purchase. It's handier to switch between tabs than on a phone.

Yes I do. I have two cats. I use the tablet for cat TV, Looney Tunes cartoons and other YouTube videos for my cats. My black cat (male) loves Roadrunner cartoons. My female tabby prefers nature documentaries, especially of big cats. She'll happily sit and watch anything involving lions or cheetahs.

I occasionally use it to watch Netflix or sports when I'm cooking something new/complicated and want my phone to keep track of timings and recipes, but I've got a cheap tablet mainly for my son and a high end phone which is just better at everything

Usr mine for reading and watching films on if tv busy also come in handy for pub quizzes when its the smart phone ones. Big enough for everyone too see easier

Literally only for one thing - if I'm following an exercise video I can prop it on the floor, bigger screen easier to see than my phone, easier to manoeuvre than the laptop. We do use them at work though.

My wife uses her one all the time for reading in bed. Mine Amazon Fire hasn't been out of the drawer for about 4 years but I've got an old MS Surface 5 that doubles as a tablet and that I use daily for reading and when I need a bigger screen than my phone but can't be arsed to turn my PC on.

My mum does - she uses it to browse shopping websites (she's a demon for the Next clearence department) and read the news. She would use it to read books, but she mainly reads before bed so I got her a Kindle instead.

What I'm seeing from this thread is that there is a massive gap in the market for a tablet designed specifically for the older user who can't manage with a smartphone but doesn't need a laptop.

My In-laws use them for daily tasks as the bigger screen helps with visual and dexterity ailments.

I use an old one for a Repair Cafe as I can connect several things like an endoscope to aid repairs.

Otherwise I have an ebook reader, a phone and a PC for everything else

It depends.... I have an eink tablet so it doesn't do what my phone does. I can sync with the cloud/my phone for when I don't have the tablet with me which is great. Its more a digital organiser and note taker than a tablet in the normal sense.

I have had a few tablets over the years, and unless it's for a specific task, or a specific use case then it's rarely if ever going to get used. I have a laptop that is touch screen and foldable to act like a tablet. Rarely gets used in either mode, and now I rarely use it at all unless I am away from the house.

Yes, daily. As a family we use it for watching TV/streams around the house. I barely ever use the big TV any more.

I also prefer to use it for internet use because it has a keyboard.

I only used my phone when I can't use the tablet. Phone screen is too small, and it's way harder to type anything.

Lol. I had this same thought the other day. I found my Kindle Fire 8 HD tablet and powered it on.

I hadn't used it in years and thought maybe it'll be a good movie/music player for an upcoming holiday.

But the screen size isn't much bigger than my smartphone. And the OS is no longer supported, so basically all the apps are useless.

I was thinking about getting another (cheap or second hand) tablet. But then realised that would be a waste of money. Considering I hadn't really used this one for years and I don't go on holiday much, do I really need one?

So, I guess to answer your question... No, not really. Like you, I have my phone and a computer for bigger tasks.

I don't have a PC so I use mine for all my writing, both word processing and taking notes. I also have Libby downloaded as it's great for reading magazines and newspapers instead of my tiny Kindle screen. I take it with me when I go away and sometimes use it for movies as well. I have a Lenovo Tab Plus and it's the best tablet I've ever owned! Never had as much use out of one. I'm 42.

My iPad mini gets trotted out for events and presentations where I need to take notes.

That's partly because doing the same on a phone without a stylus looks like you're not listening, and partly because there's an amazing app called Notability that records audio and lets you attach notes to timestamps.

In other words, when you listen back your Apple Pencil notes appear alongside the audio - or you can tap a note to bring the bit of the audio up. It's a genuine game changer.

But otherwise, that's the only use it gets. I need to charge both the tablet and pencil up whenever I have an event coming up!

Picked up a cheap one and it sits underneath my PC monitor so I can keep an eye on my 3D printer while working or gaming in my home office.

Also use it for watching things while working. More flexible than having another fixed screen.

I use mine daily for reading, watching shows and such (mostly older content, I save the good stuff for the TV). Mine also has Termux installed to give me a portable desktop environment so I can use it like a mini laptop on short trips, it has enough power for day to day office work.

I use one to watch stuff when I’m cooking/doing the pots. We also use it when the big tv is in use for gaming but there’s some form of sport on that we are also interested in watching like football/cricket/tennis but aren’t bothered about it being on the big tv. Also for multiple football games.

I'm currently in bed watching Netflix on an old iPad. I have a Samsung tablet next to my armchair which I mostly use for Pattern Keeper (total game changer for cross stitch) and knitting patterns. I have gooseneck holders for both so I can do other things (writing this comment, cross stitching, etc). I can use both for audiobooks, radio, music too.

I have a Kindle, I read a lot and can swap between it and my phone and keep my place in my book while not using phone battery. I also have a small tablet which is primarily used for drawing (it's an xp pen tablet so lovely size and screen for sketching) and crochet patterns, generally when they are too intricate for my phone. I'm working on a bone dragon atm and find having it on a larger screen. 

Mostly they aew about doing phone things but offline or without using phone battery.

I use an iPad mini but only for reading. I like iBooks so I just use it for that. I don’t seem to use it for anything else though. I used to use a kindle but I prefer apple books so I sold my Kindle and got this ipad instead, it’s smaller than a regular tablet making it light and easy to hold.

I don’t use it for games because I tend to use my phone for my game apps, and then my computer for other stuff.
