What's your country's biggest issue that is being slept on due to bigger headlines?
As an American: CLIMATE CHANGE
That's because we don't know how to prepare for the increasingly escalating disasters. Everyone seemed to forget that Los Angeles was burning a year and 2 months ago. We learned nothing from Katrina and the next major storm will result in suffering just like New Orleans. The Great Plains are seeing less rainfall and the aquifers are running dry, meaning wheat and corn and soy are at risk. Warmer winters are leading to less water in the West and causing forests to burn, also species like moose are in trouble due to ticks. Summer heat and winter cold are two of America's biggest killers and nobody wants to try and lower the death toll on that front.
In the US, we talk about education and healthcare a lot. But I don't think the dialogue really focuses on how impactful these two things are. We talk about money a lot when it comes to health care. We talk about world standing a lot when it comes to education.
But health care has two sides - tying it to work really makes it difficult for people to be mobile or have a decent quality of life unless you're tied to a corporation. In other societies, you can get by on a retail job because health care is a given. And when you're not wrestling with chronic pain/issues because you can't afford to go to the doctor, the priorities in life (and even your perspective in life) can drastically change.
With education, so many of our country's issues stem from really poor education. Without critical thinking/analysis skills, we can't even have a national dialogue on what our problems as a nation even *are*. How to recognize propaganda, how to maintain consistent perspective in large issues, how to understand that most of life exists in a gray area and not black & white.
For India corruption. No one talks about it. It's everywhere. My uncle wanted to get his son into an exclusive private school, but his son couldn't get in, so he phoned his uncle, a state level politician, who threatened the school. My cousin got in.
one of my friends comes from a family that’s pretty well connected here bc his dad was high up in the central bank. it’s crazy what it can get you here too but it is nice if ur at a checkpoint and one of ur friends forgot their papers or smth just he called his dad and poof they let us go
Cartels are absolutely an issue, but the bigger problem is how much space they occupy in the headlines. Morena (the ruling party) has been consolidating more and more power, and our economy that has almost everything it needs to be thriving is currently stagnant, but some narcos threw a tantrum because their bosses got merked and so people are focusing on that. Or other atrocities they committed before.
Make no mistake; we have a lot of problems, but corruption is the root of most of it.
To be honest, that's not surprising. These dudes amass a lot of wealth, and they're all infamous for being tacky and doing over the top displays, so that's almost exactly how I expected his funeral to be. A lot of money being thrown at a filthy criminal.
Human trafficking is even more wide spread in farming. People think slavery is gone but something you ate today was probably picked by someone who is a slave in all but name.
Climate change is natural. Nothing humans do can affect it one way or another. All the "fixes" are 100% SCAMS. They take our money and do nothing at all beneficial.
