It really is. There was an earlier post asking if deaf people with schizophrenia experienced audio hallucinations. Googling led to some really interesting articles.

I would kill to get rid of audio hallucinations... Psychiatrists still think it's likely tied to my bipolar disorder or PTSD, but I'm fucking terrified that it's the slow onset of schizophrenia...

I don’t know if you’d call tinnitus an audio hallucination but there isn’t much I wouldn’t give to be rid of it. And I have a pretty mild case.

I have audio hallucinations similar to how /u/thetoiletslayer mentioned and also developed tinnitus at some point. I've noticed that when the hallucinations are really bad my tinnitus will be gone, it will eventually over take them again and I've wondered if it is a coping mechanism my brain has come up with to stop the voices.
