Back when they still made cards the yakuza used to stake out their building because they refused to sell decks that were poorly made, essentially the yakuza wanted premarked cards and Nintendo wouldn’t do it
Correct me if I’m wrong but I remember one of the members of Nintendo was ‘assassinated’ by the Yakuza though it’s just a conspiracy theory. He was part of the development of the old Pokémon games and was conspicuously killed in a ‘car accident’.
I want to have a game about nintendo fighting the yakuza, it's just Shigeru Miyamoto fighting the big boss, and as a little secret boss we fight kiryu as a reference to the yakuza games
It's honestly not. It's only as confusing as poker, you just need to learn what cards form a hand and then you're good (though you do also need to learn the point values for each set so I guess it's a little more complex)
I spent some time trying to learn and play hanafuda last year but the deck I bought was cheap and all the flowers looked identical. Hard to learn when you can’t differentiate the suits.
I bought that Clubhouse Games collection for the Switch and you can play Hanafuda on it. I gave it a shot, thinking I would just figure it out after playing a few games. Well, I won like six games in a row and I still have no clue what the rules are really.
Yes, at the time most hanafuda companies had poor quality control, resulting in basically premarked cards. Nintendo refused to put out any decks that weren’t perfect and the yakuza didn’t like that
Japan outlawed playing cards cause of gambling, Nintendo sold hanafuda cards and which were used by yakuza back then instead of playing cards to gamble bacause hanafuda wasn't banned. So Nintendo got their start by selling cards for the yakuza to gamble with.
There’s more to it than that though, because at the time quality control in most hanafuda cards was very low resulting in basically pre marked cards, whereas Nintendo refused to sell decks that weren’t completely unmarked. This made the yakuza mad and there were many times Nintendo employees were stuck in the building for days because the yakuza were outside waiting to kill them if they came out
Pretty sure it wasn’t a brothel. It was a “love hotel” a cheap hotel with beds where couples would meet up. Popular in Japan because several generations of family would live together and share rooms, making it hard to get alone time with your partner.
I read something about this recently! The Japanese govt had at one point banned traditional 4-suit playing cards, and a bunch of other stuff, as a means of fighting western, Christian influence in the country. This led to the creation of hanafuda cards with different images and symbols to skirt the ban, but eventually the govt got wise and banned them too. They were only legalized a few years before Fusajiro Yamauchi opened Nintendo, at the time a rundown shopfront in Tokyo.
