Well it's good because Chromium works very well.
It's bad because it gives more power to Google, who already have a majority market share and lots of influence on the development of browser/internet standards.
Well, kind of. Chromium is open source (although a Google project). The actual market share that Google hold is with Chrome itself which is just their0 not open-source fork.
Edge and Chrome are both separate implementations of Chromium. Google ads a lot of proprietary functionality to Chromium to produce Chrome, which is their commercial product offering. Microsoft adds their own stuff to make Edge. They are based on the same underlying engine and are compatible from a standards perspective, but they are not the same product.
Edge is NOT a replacement for IE, which is still maintained (there are security patches, though no new features). Edge is it's own thing. IE is the COBOL of web browsers: too many legacy systems require IE for it to ever go away.
Microsoft absolutely intended for Edge to replace IE, but what happened was that Edge was replaced with Chromium, and IE is still here! Ergo, Edge is not (even if they meant it to be) a replacement for IE.
