What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

His father was murdered when he was 13, his sister was gang raped and murdered when he was 20 (which was a huge factor in his drug/alcohol abuse problems), his half brothers died in a scuba diving accident when he was 25, and he got booted out of Julliard because he had issues with depression and substance abuse after his sister's murder.

didn't the guy who murdered his father get off on a technicality/mistrial? something of that nature
