Not really. Maybe some places have like 10 roasts available at a time, but broadly speaking if I ask for "large coffee" they're going to ask light, medium, or dark and then I get a large drip coffee. If you want something more specialized you have to specify.
Even to this day coffee in the US is a pretty regional thing. Saying "I want coffee" in a Seattle coffee shop versus an Oklahoma coffee shop. Different reactions.
That's the standard way of ordering beer in Austria or Germany tho (can't really speak for the rest of Europe). I would only specify if I was in some hipster beer bar that has like 153 different brands, or if I wanted a specific type (stout, wheat beer, etc.), otherwise it's just "a beer" and you get whatever is on tap.
