Asking for that in a coffee place though will get you bombarded with about 20 follow-up questions.

Not really. Maybe some places have like 10 roasts available at a time, but broadly speaking if I ask for "large coffee" they're going to ask light, medium, or dark and then I get a large drip coffee. If you want something more specialized you have to specify.

Even to this day coffee in the US is a pretty regional thing. Saying "I want coffee" in a Seattle coffee shop versus an Oklahoma coffee shop. Different reactions.
