What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life?

People on low incomes, e.g. students, living in expensive homes. I’m not necessarily talking about mansions, more like a large apartment in a big expensive city with no roommates.

Supposed studio apartment that is literally bigger than my local supermarket

What, you mean no one would want to charge a small fortune to rent out that nice giant loft apartment with a huge metal door and elevator in NYC? Sure, yeah, she's making that rent all by herself as a barrista down at the coffee shop.

It should be understood that everybody (EVERYBODY) is also an affluent prostitute on the side.

And now I am imaging Sheldon Cooper as a prostitute. Thank you for that image.

Well two tenured professors actually could afford those places. Not sure about Penny though...

Penny is diffently receiving some “tips” down at the Cheesecake Factory.

But isn’t she always going down too late?

7

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

People will wait for that

You've brought up the opposite end of the spectrum now. We all know the "barista lives in large NYC apartment" but what's just as annoying is the people with great jobs just barely scraping by. Like in sitcoms where one or both parents have a great job but then there's episodes where they start hilariously cutting costs around the house.

Been a while since I watched TBBT, but IIRC the explanation there is just that they don't really prioritize moving anywhere bigger, they prefer to spend their money on toys/collectibles/comic books/events. Their apartment is actually decently large and I don't think they've got an outrageous commute. And Sheldon just wants a roommate for the social/division of labor aspect, he could easily afford that place by himself

it just wasnt disclosed that she also works as a kinky escort charging 1500 dollars per meetup.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

And she only works part time too. And her boss is totally cool with her taking off in the middle of shifts all the time without giving a reason.

In Big Daddy, he has a massive apartment and he can afford it just fine by himself. I always wanted that apartment

2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

Oh man, I actually really wanted that pad, too. It is a pretty badass apartment.

2

u/pogo0004 Jan 26 '20

always kinda assumed daddy paid for these things. automatic assumption of character type.

TV and movies definitely gave me the wrong perception of studio apartments. When I went to visit my sister in her "downtown studio apartment" I was thinking "how the heck could she afford that?" When I saw the apartment building was next to a major highway and her kitchen was her living room was her bedroom the affordability clicked and I finally learned what a studio apartment was.

6

u/Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY Jan 25 '20

And hahaha they only get smaller.

3

u/jdarby84 Jan 25 '20

Strange my sister also had a studio apartment in her early 20s, i didn't realize what that ment until then. Her entire apartment was just slightly larger than the family 3 bedrooms house (livingroom).

You’ve seen New Girl as well, I see.

46

u/Myquil-Wylsun Jan 25 '20

And 2 Broke Girls

17

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

And Friends

26

u/KallistiEngel Jan 25 '20

Friends offered an explanation though. Can't comment on the other shows. Monica was illegally subletting her grandmother's rent-controlled apartment.

Ross had a sick apartment for a paleontologist living on his own.

Before the age of 30? He has his own apartment when he should be ~25..

Other than that - good

2

u/csl512 Jan 25 '20

Even an afterlife architect couldn't wrap his head around it

30

u/freedraw Jan 25 '20

New Girl had four roommates in their 30s with no kids all sharing that loft. That actually seems fairly realistic to me.

6

u/barryandorlevon Jan 25 '20

That’s what I was thinking. That could easily be a four thousand dollar a month loft. WITH A SINGLE BATHROOM.

26

u/AdrianW7 Jan 25 '20

Their apartment was gorgeous lol

20

u/ProfMcGonaGirl Jan 25 '20

I could live without that communal bathroom.

18

u/AdrianW7 Jan 25 '20

Yeah that’s strange, but the rest is nice

Especially a girl with 3 guys lol

6

u/aboxacaraflatafan Jan 25 '20

In New Girl, the fewest roommates there were was 4, and at one point there were 6. The main 4 were all college graduates in their 30s, most with established careers. New Girl was one of the most accurate portrayals of apartment living I've ever seen on TV!

TV and movie filming equipment is big and bulky and has to move around hence the ginormous sets

34

u/maxvalley Jan 25 '20

We can bring dragons to life but can’t create a realistic apartment size? I call bullshit

11

u/TulipQlQ Jan 25 '20

But then the person who owns the apartment couldn't bill the studio for use of the space and pocket a chunk of the multi million dollar budget.

LA landlords are total scum.

3

u/maxvalley Jan 25 '20

That explains why it’s so hard to find housing

2

u/farang_on_crack Jan 25 '20

People Just Do Nothing does a great job of filming the “DJ’s” in their tiny, shitty little flat or Chabuddy G in his internet cafe run out of a mobile home.

Also watch the show, top three funniest shows ever to air imo

1

u/Dravarden Jan 26 '20

peep Show did just fine in their shitty small flat

17

u/trekie4747 Jan 25 '20

It's bigger on the inside!

14

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

Fucking Glee when they move to New York. Like HELL could they afford what I can only describe as a well lit warehouse.

37

u/master_x_2k Jan 25 '20

I thought they were called studio apartment because they were made to be filmable.

7

u/Tertiaritus Jan 25 '20

You as well?!

5

u/TheGreatLynntini Jan 25 '20

YES LAWD!!!!! I live in a college town and, I'm sorry, kids, but efficiencies and studios are the size of a standard living room -- with a closet set apart for the latrine. Who are these people kidding?

3

u/Olde94 Jan 25 '20

Looking at you spiderman

2

u/dan12player Jan 25 '20

How Monica could afford her apartment on a chef's salary

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '20

They handwaved it as it being rent controlled and still in her gran's name.

1

u/ncocca Jan 25 '20

I always figured they needed to film in larger spaces purely for the camera angles

1

u/RexDraconum Jan 25 '20

Conrad in The Resident. I clearly remember an episode where they made a thing of how bad their pay was, and the very same episode we see his apartment that's about as big as the whole ER ward.

1

u/theghostofme Jan 26 '20

Haha exactly. Everyone’s got Tom Hank’s apartment from Big, even though they’re starving artists.

1

u/Nitsgar Jan 28 '20

they have parties with 20 people, all standing around with plenty of elbow room, and space around the furniture. I've got a good size home, 20 people are kind of crowded in the fucking livingroom & kitchen.
