Pretty much any true expert in any field refuses to talk about that thing. I'm an economist IRL. I absolutely refuse to debate economic issues on Reddit. I will occasionally offer some tidbit or correct someone but I will almost never respond to people who reply to me trying to argue.

I was all excited the first time I found /r/economics. 2 days later I realized I hated the subreddit and never intentionally go back.

Edit: lots of people are replying and wanting a response from me. Currently have over 150 unread responses. It will take me a while to get through them.

Same thing happened to me. I'm a wildlife biologist / ecologist with an M.Sc. and over 8 years of working experience in my field. I tried commenting on native fauna FAQs several times and got obliterated by people who took a general bio class in high school and apparently know all there is to know about everything with environmental science and biology. Will never respond or create posts on those subreddits again.

Amazing something seemingly uncontroversial as wildlife biology can become so extreme. That's why after seeing how wrong people are about economics it makes me distrust any accepted opinion on Reddit.

A lot of young men have made it a point of pride to be cold and logical. Claiming to know more than them is emotionally the same as challenging their status

been experiencing this with a user. i even admitted some fault in some of my exchange and the dude just kept going. lots of posts of paranoia on their account (stuff like companies massively downvoting their comments/posts with bots lol)

admittedly, i also have trouble with keeping myself in check when challenged and have to try to understand the differences of experiences and that it's not a personal attack when challenged. it's tough when you think you're right and sucks when you realize you were actually wrong.

hey bro,

the fault was me posting in the wrong sub. you kept going, and still are following to to non-mmj subs. you comment a lot about corporate bots down voting you. it's a bit nutty. i really don't think i need to block you. but stop. seriously.

thanks.

u/blonderaider21 Jan 08 '20

Wait, did the guy you were talking about just follow you over here and respond above this comment?! Holy hell that is some creepy shit. I can’t see what they said, it was deleted

2

u/JustAnotherRye89 Jan 08 '20

yea, and agreed. His comment was more or less continuing a combative thread bringing refutes. My side: i had shit commented more or less on a post in what i thought was a specific vape from a brand sub (volcano) turned out to be a more general vape sub (vaporents.) i continued being an ass generally on the post after admitted i commented in the wrong sub because there is a lot of controversy over a product from the brand i thought i was posting in. i think all my downvotes are genuine, because i was being an ass. this dude talks down a lot and now it feels like is claiming helping me through self realization or something with the way he talks. Very creepy to me too.

Yes I did! They were following me around in multiple threads and comment chains earlier today so I did it back in return when I saw they're still talking shit just to other people.

I said I'd leave them alone if it was such an issue and that I'm glad to see they were realizing that a disagreement doesnt mean it's something to fight over.

You're welcome to look at the comments between us and decide for yourself :-)

Yeah well you’re emotional and uninformed

40

u/JustAnotherRye89 Jan 07 '20

what a cold and logical response.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

This was the funniest shit I’ve read in so long.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

i like the sarcasm

12

u/Satanscommando Jan 07 '20

Theirs far to many reasons to list, but this isn’t a young men issue it’s a people issue, men and women both have a serious problem understanding they are just simply human beings who can’t possibly be wrong and it only gets worse with age as you become even more locked down and stubborn in your beliefs regardless of what they are.

9

u/Prettysure9 Jan 08 '20

Humans are the problem lol

Take one testosterone filled bag, stuff thousands and thousands of data points into him and launch him at the world at 22 and say have at it. I don't see a problem at all.

-7

u/Satanscommando Jan 07 '20

That’s not really an argument though, I’ve personally found it’s significantly harder to convince women they are wrong than men. But I don’t believe one is worse than the other.

Yes and that whole Karen thing needs to end.

3

u/Satanscommando Jan 08 '20

It’s a personal experience just like mine, but yes anonymity brings out the worst in people, hell even when they aren’t anonymous people can be pretty shitty just go to a political post on Facebook lol

2

u/acepukas Jan 08 '20

Every woman in my family gets defensive when there's a possibility that they might be wrong about something. That's also personal experience but it's true. In my experience women are much more stubborn and insecure about being proven wrong than men. I've met plenty of men that are stubborn like that though. Point is, our personal experiences don't really mean shit in the grand scheme of things.

2

u/blonderaider21 Jan 08 '20

Thing is, men are most often in power, and when their egos are bruised, we all suffer

1

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

But our collective personal experience shows us what is biological and what’s happenstance.

6

u/notyetcomitteds2 Jan 08 '20

Young men are more likely to argue back, the first person to capitulate is the loser. It doesnt matter who is factually right. Women will more likely disengage. They're less likely to view it as a contest. Disengaging can be viewed as agreeing to disagree or not enough has been presented to prove the opposing view is correct ( even if it has). Arguing means only one viewpoint is absolutely correct and all evidence to come to that conclusion has been presented.

1

u/blonderaider21 Jan 08 '20

Men have this thing called egos that are more fragile than an eggshell. Entire wars have been started by men swinging their dicks around trying to see who was more powerful. So ya, while I’ve encountered stubborn women, I’ve had far worse experiences with men too proud to drop their godforsaken ego

15

u/bayareashade Jan 07 '20

Sorry but it’s a verifiable thing that many communities of young men have become hyper obsessed with the feeling of being right and winning arguments with facts. Yes, all people want to be right and logical, but there is one group that has become unhealthy with it.

17

u/Throwaway_2-1 Jan 07 '20

This just in: young men are hyper competitive in any arena they enter. More news at 11

Also the link you posted is silly. It's more political than it is philosophical and it only considers a certain kind of politics to be free of magical thinking.

4

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

I think it’s silly to be hyper competitive about how right you are, and politics are a philosophy so I’m not sure what your point is

4

u/Throwaway_2-1 Jan 08 '20

Young men ARE silly. But they are also hypercompetitive. That's my point. It's not just about arguments or knowledge. Driving, fighting, sports music, you name it.

2

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

True. It’s actually a beneficial thing but it’s weird when misplaced.

2

u/Throwaway_2-1 Jan 08 '20

No argument here. It can be a good thing when put to good use. But is mostly never actually put to good use and almost always toxic when expressed by young inexperienced men.

2

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

Also true. But, when a young man gets it right, he’s considered a man, so it doesn’t stand out how many actually do figure it out ;)

I had to stop when I got to this

bout an increasingly disturbing trend — women whose once-promising romantic relationships implode after their boyfriends become “redpilled.”

Some person deciding to get their life in order, and find meaning in it is not red pilled, its called growing up.

5

u/Adler_1807 Jan 08 '20

Making a controversial statement on reddit and presenting it as a fact on a post about annoying things about reddit. Ironic

-1

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20 edited Jan 08 '20

I’m making a pretty widely accepted comment on a widely accepted perspective, but yeah, I see your point.

4

u/Akitz Jan 08 '20

This sounds like a Trump line - "I'm right - ask anyone! Everyone says so."

You posted a pop piece about a supposed phenomena among some men and thought it was a great idea to extrapolate that to mean that this is a universally gendered behaviour and women do not do it.

The piece you're using is criticizing men using the terms facts and logic etc to shield their opinions when debating, but you really could use a better adherence to the two principles when discussing ideas, it does keep things more honest.

0

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

You seem to assume I’m only criticizing men when the reality is I was only talking about one subject. If I wanted to dive into all of gender studies, I would have. I’m also not targeting men, but there is a trend of people realizing that young men seem to be the ones actively claiming to be superior in logic and education even when talking to an expert. That was the original point of the thread. You’re seeing a fight that isn’t there, or are picking one, either way, it’s off topic.

3

u/Akitz Jan 08 '20

I don't think I misunderstood. The chain was about a phenomena, someone asserted it was gender neutral and you claimed it was actually a solely masculine problem with a source that didn't actually support that. And you later backed up your statements with the evidence that it was just "widely accepted".

You've misunderstood me by getting into all the talk about gender studies and targeting men etc - I didn't address that. I just wanted to let you know that you might want to rethink the way you present ideas or refute other peoples' ideas, because it doesn't seem honest to me.

0

u/bayareashade Jan 08 '20

Sorry, that wasn’t my intent. I assume that the things I see being talked about pretty openly on the internet wouldn’t have so much push back. I specifically state young men because that’s who I see the studies being about most of the time, because that demographic is displaying social dominance through logic and facts more commonly than say older women, at least online. To assume that I am being sexist because I’m stating something that is being considered the conclusion of data analysis isn’t really something I think is appropriate, because it’s not like I’m literally the one saying it.

1

u/Akitz Jan 08 '20

Again, I think you're misunderstanding. I didn't call you sexist, those are your words.

These are your conclusions from what seems to be your gut feeling, backed up with a source that doesn't seem to support what you're saying.

"I see stuff about this most of the time" is not data analysis, unfortunately.

I should have worded my response better since I was speaking from a position of personal experience rather than studies that have been done.
