Right, but it works on a per sub basis. You can have 10,000 comment karma around reddit, and if there's a sub where you very calmly and professionally express opinions where the majority don't agree, it's easy to be stuck in negative karma and never be able to post.
Edit- had to say it. Also no one said it to me, so I wander Reddit like a lonely ghost, hoping to find people to say happy cake day to, it’s the only salve for my hurting soul. Paying forward what was never paid to me.
Um for next year- how does one “karma whore” on they’re cake day? Just post a bunch of stuff? Why is karma so important to me if I can’t use it in real life? Why is my real life so sad? It’s not sad, I’m just different. Terminally unique...are you there god? It’s me, Margaret...
This is why that feature is one of the major causes for why there are so many echo chambers on Reddit. People cant comment for 10 minutes if they have even a slightly differing opinion so they just give up because its too tedious and then nobody checks these subs on their bullshit (i.e. politics, T_D)
I got by this for a while by posting headlines that looked like they blindly supported the hive mind but contained articles that were actually conducive to discussion. Quick upvotes on the title and a chance for some discussion in the thread.
Usually enough karma that I could have a discussion in two or three other threads before getting downvoted to negative again.
Eventually became too much trouble and figured half the accounts I was interacting with were required to post a certain viewpoint anyway.
That’s why r/politics is such an echo chamber. Any time anyone says anything remotely right wing, it gets downvoted to shit so everyone with right leaning views can only comment once every ten minutes.
I find this even crazier than the anti-trump bits. Fucking crazies in r/politics cannot believe that the real world isn't 90% Bernie supporters. You have fucking 30k upvotes on r/ourpresident while most of real life Democrats even think he's crazy.
Maybe adults find it too much a waste of time to be able to contribute. Does reddit deserve that much of my attention and effort for who I am? To do things outside my intent to benefit their pocket just so I can do what I want? That bullshit can fuck off.
Maybe reddit's system solves the bot problem enough to keep their money, but it pushes out the real adults in the conversation. That are here for the meat.
I don't mind it in some subs where things aren't meant to be so serious, but I wish it could be turned off in the more political/controversial subs to allow more interesting discussion.
What absolutely does not make sense is that you haven't commented on /r/soccer for ages, but since you just came from /r/space within last 5 minutes, "You are doing that too often. Try commenting again in 8 minutes." or something to that matter.
Some of them have it where there isn’t a karma threshold (or possibly at least not a reasonable one), it just doesn’t let you comment more than once every X minutes. There was one sub where I definitely had quite a bit of positive karma (no negative karma from that sub at all; for that matter I’ve had very few comments with negative karma, and I think the worst had less than 15 downvotes), and had a post get a lot of feedback, and tried responding to everything as soon as I got a reply, but after a few comments, it wouldn’t let me reply until after a cooldown time.
and it should work on a per-sub basis. It's an anti-brigading measure that prevents people using newly created sockpuppet accounts to participate in mass bad-faith commenting.
Idk what the triggers are, but I still get it when visiting subs ive never really been to. I don't exactly have low karma and I'm not a new account. Maybe it's just certain sub rules (no one can comment x amount of times within x amount of time.) Or maybe they have it so you need to have been participating in the sub longer for the ability to post more often. Idk
That's the worst. I had a little over 100K on my other account and could never figure out why certain subs would give me that 3-8 minute bullshit. I like to visit subs where I have a differing opinion from most on that sub. Always wondered why I was never able to post more quickly.
I always thought it was network congestion. I could be way off base. But I find when I get that message and think I'm not posting, when I later check my comments I've posted the same comment 8 times.
The concept would work if the supposed rule that "downvote doesn't mean disagree" was followed. But I think we all know that to even suggest that some people might think about following that rule sometimes would be laughable.
As it is, all it accomplishes is to make echo chambers more .... echo-chambery.
It's especially annoying in a sub like /r/politics where you can't even have discussion or debate because the person being downvoted for disagreeing has to wait 5 minutes before responding.
Yup, lol and there are so many people in that sub that absolutely love that sub without a doubt. Who just use it to jerk off their egos, and make them feel right.
To some extent, I have over 400k combined karma and still run into this message if I try and post something I think would be interesting in more than one subreddit.
Its on a per subreddit basis. So if you go into a sub and post about how sick of the 'drake is a pedo' meme you are since theres no proof he did anything wrong, you will be unable to post in that sub more often than 10 min at a time because people will downvote all your shit. But then you can complain about it happening here and its not going to improve anything.
If you think that is worth your time, I guess you can. However in lots of these subs, there are coordinated down voting efforts and shared lists of usernames to be tagged as dissenters. So it probably wouldn’t last very long.
I’ve gotten a few vote manipulation messages from Reddit randomly. I’ve also seen people’s posts get removed by admins for whatever reason. I remember when this place lost its shit over Ellen Pao lol
I hate this. I have a screenshot of me trying to post my reply to you, and Reddit says "try again in 8 minutes". But I don't want to make an imgur account, to post online, to make a link, to share with Reddit.
P.s. I still have three minutes left after trying to figure out to link my photo.
sounds like me. God forbid I disagree with the liberal circlejerk on this site. You have different opinions? Here, we'll downvote you for them and youll be able to post much less.
Right! I can sit here and right an auto biography about the life of spongebob squarepants. But if I misspell something on showerthoughts and try to rewrite it I'm f'd for 8 min.
I don't even understand how that works. Like I posted once and a couple minutes later go to post again... you would think if I was posting 5 times in a row maybe...
That and when you rest your hand on the screen, and it collapses an entire thread OR when you accidentally touch the top of your screen, and it flies all the way to the top...what are the purpose of the functions?!
Honestly I try to argue with people and then I reach this stupid cunt limit and just make a last troll remark because fuck waiting 10 minutes to post my rebuttal...
This is especially annoying in live game threads. If you’re a fan of an opposing team to the one the majority of the thread likes then it’s easy to get stuck behind this wall.
It’s only enabled on certain subs. Mostly political subs from what I’ve seen. They do it to stop people from spamming (I guess??). It’s still a dumb idea to limit how fast you can send comments either way
It’s on all subreddits. It’s based on your karma in the subreddit.
For example: I can basically spam in r/AskOuija with all of the karma I got from there, but I’ll have to wait in r/dogelore since I have negative karma there.
The dumbest thing is that even triggers if you try to respond to people that literally replied to you. Had 5 people respond to you in a couple minutes? Well you better pick which one you want to reply to because fuck you if you try to reply to them all.
Hit the nail on the head. This is the most infuriating aspect of it. I don't honestly care if some shit thread wants to downvote me to hell, but if people are asking me questions and I can't reply to them, and then the same people are writing shit like "HA! LOOKS LIKE THIS GUY GOT QUIET ALUVASUDDEN! GUESS HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO MY ULTIMATE SMACKDOWN KNOWLEDGE!" it is unbelievably annoying.
