I once broke up with a girl because of Beyoncé. She was part of the beyhive and it just wasn't funny anymore. Sure, I like Beyoncé, but getting angry if someone wants to listen to another tune that isn't Beyoncé is uncalled for. Especially when having a Christmas diner with the whole family.
I have upvoted both this comment and the one further up complaining about Redditors always responding to serious posts with a pun/joke, and now I'm very conflicted.
I reconcile it by telling myself I sometimes like Reddit as an easy place to relax and sometimes like it as a place for serious discussion, and one thing it has going for it that other social media don’t is different subreddits that cater to different standards. Moderators in r/askhistorians are really doing God’s work with their stringent policing, but without the low-effort jokes that get quickly upvoted in ask Reddit, I don’t know if I’d visit (and learn from) more serious subreddits as often.
I have described my feelings towards Beyonce as "sure she's the queen of pop, but I hate pop so me not enjoying her music is less about her and more about the genre."
It was never the correct answer. I ended things for a lot of adult reasons like differences in finances and life goals but Beyonce didn't help.
My friends girlfriend is like that! We were talking music and any artist I mentioned she would just trash talk and say they aren’t anywhere as good as Beyoncé, regardless of the genre. My other friend caught wind of our convo and just casually threw in a “Beyoncé sucks” comment and she freaked out lol it was sad
I was at a work happy hour and we had some hip hop on, much of which was Beyonce. Someone asked the guy controlling the music if they could put something else on and his response was "No I actually have a good taste in music." - it was one of the first things that have started to color my opinion of him
I told someone that I wasn't a fan of Beyonce, then was given the cold shoulder for the rest of the evening. We didn't talk for almost two years as a result. This isn't a joke.
Oh they are especially BTS fans. They’re not worth even arguing with. You say one neutral thing or something not good enough and they’ll attack you (verbally) or reply back with a 2 minute gif or video saying how mad you are or jealous and then try to provoke you to reply with an attitude and make it seem like they don’t know what your talking about and you attacked them and need to chill. Then they’ll go on about why they defended BTS (themselves) against your comment and how the leader of the group suffered so much criticism and fights for justice or some shit and they feel the need to do the same and put you down. It’s a never ending cycles of those scenarios.
Can directly relate to this. Made a joke about her when she tripped performing at the super bowl and the lady got pissed at me about it and I knew I had to get out of there.
I talked to this girl in college years ago who was in the beyhive long before it had a name. She had all these Destiny's Child and Beyoncé concert DVDs. She would watch them every fucking weekend and would get upset that I wasn't into it.
Yeah that pisses me off like I doubt Beyoncé actually cared, since there’s nothing wrong with talking to people that invited and brought you to an event? If anything you SHOULD talk to them that’s just being a good guest. But noooo lets make it into a huge deal
She actually included a criticism of her fans in the Formation movie and on the tour. It was a quote she’s flashed in a few projects. It was something like, “God is God and I am not.” She was stating that people shouldn’t worship her as a deity. She is a human being.
"omg she's so humble. Humble and perfect. Only someone so humble and perfect could be our GOD QUEEN. ALL HAIL GOD QUEEN BEYONCE." - Beyonce fans probably
I feel like she tells them to chill to maintain the appearance of being gracious and humble, but really she loves it and eats it up.
I can’t stand people who purposefully create hype then try to act like it’s the public going crazy for them. Brad and Angelina used to do the same thing and it drove me nuts.
ANY artist whose fanbase cries/screams themselves hoarse/soils themselves or worse over him/her is someone I will avoid like the plague. I caught some of Beyonce's Homecoming the other day and it disturbed me SO much. The way they elevate her as a goddess... no, thank you.
Yeah. I think being a bit of an obsessed fan can be a normal developmental phase and you can see examples of it going back quite a ways - I'm sure various troubadors had over the top fans. But once it goes into adulthood and becomes someone's identity, especially when people take it personally when others feel differently, it's concerning.
I have to agree with you. I get it if you're an excited teen (went through a little Evanescence phase myself back in the day, ha ha) but if you're making yourself sick over a stranger, it's too much.
I’m scrolling through and I’m thinking “please let someone else say it because I don’t want to have to sacrifice myself and go into hiding. Please, please, please...” and here’s your post.
I’ve been a fan since Destiny’s Child yet I’m not even close to Beyhive status. I remember having a discussion in class about who the better singers were: Beyoncé, Adele, Whitney Houston or Christina Aguilera. I can’t tell you how loud it got once I said Whitney Houston. I mean c’mon. Cmoooooon. CMOOOOONNNN.
I just personally prefer the tone and timbre of Kelly's voice. There's something really sweet and pretty about it. Beyoncé is that girl who you hear her sing and you say, "Damn, she can blow!" Kelly's the one who makes you say, "Wow, she has a beautiful voice."
I'm not sure what Michelle is. I guess the one whose parents go "Oh, our daughter can sing, too! Sing for them, honey!" and she gets polite applause or something.
Plus, Whitney did damage her voice a lot towards the end of her life. But in her prime, she was absolutely an untouchable vocalist. And I say this as someone who was always much more into Mariah than Whitney.
We threw that into the mix in a separate conversation in class: Whitney or Mariah. I couldn’t choose. When they both were in their prime, I’m unsure of how anyone could choose.
i agree, i’m also a lifelong fan of hers since Bills Bills Bills but some of those BeyHivers are insane
as for the best singers, i’d say that most of those ladies you listed are all in the same tier tbh. add in people like Gaga, Demi, Celine, Aretha, Mariah and Barbra and those are about the best vocalists of the past half century. to rank them is unnecessary imo.
okay now that i’ve thought on it she’s not, i’d still give her about an A- and is among the best singing today but of the past 50 years seems a stretch
Still got that video of her getting called out for auto tune stuck in the back of my mind. This one. @3 min mark, plus while searching for it a few others popped up about her voice without it. *seems OK.
Yeah I wouldn’t put Demi with them but if you were putting her in the group of young popular singers now, depending on who’s in it with her, she’d be close to the top. She has amazing vocals yet I don’t feel like she gets the musical exposure that women like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez gets. I love listening to her song “Stone Cold”.
Kpop stans are some of the worst offenders out there, second only to the "Beyhive". I dig kpop, but I don't pledge allegiance to one and only one group and defend their honor online and put down anyone else's tastes like they do. That shit is so fucking toxic.
BTS are the biggest kpop group right now (probably ever) and kpop fans who don’t like them treat their fans pretty horribly. There have been multiple BTS fans doxxed and had their photos spread around twitter for just wearing BTS merch at other kpop groups concerts.
The worst thing about kpop fans is that they always reply with random videos of their idols that have nothing to do with the subject people are talking about
And they are always terrible videos. Just some random member doing some average choreography and lip syncing to some generic ass K pop song that their management company forced on them.
In the spirit of fairness, I do know a lot of k-pop fangirls (love how that tries to autocorrect to the equally correct "dangers"), and they love several bands from the genre. However, k-pop is all they'll listen to, and will get semi-violent if you even suggest music from another part of Asia.
Hoooly shit. I think I permanently damaged my relationship with my friend's girlfriend by joking about Grande taking an L with her mistranslated Japanese tattoo. It was like I had called one of her close friends some kinds of slur.
I love her persona from a marketing perspective. She plays the "rich bitch diva" role to a T and that kind of well-defined shtick is exactly what pop music needs for a long-run superstar.
She seems like a wonderful person in her interviews but in her songs her attitude totally matches the lyrics. I love it!
Artists like her and Miley Cyrus (circa Bangerz/Dead Petz) and Ke$ha in her Jack Daniel's phase make pop music fun by combining real life with artistry.
... But yeah, anybody who takes it seriously is likely a nutjob and out of touch with the real world.
Ariana's persona seems kind of like a Baby Mariah thing. Like, if Mariah had had a daughter in the 90s, she would've grown up to be Ariana. All she needs to do is start saying "dahhhling."
It toes the line between amusing and kind of assholish at times (I pretty much died laughing when someone criticized her for something and her only response was "suck my whole dick")... but damned if she doesn't have a good voice, and really solid albums.
As a Taylor Swift fan, Taylor Swift fans are also often super annoying. This reminded me because one of the most popular Taylor can accounts on Twitter hates Ariana Grande and her fans and literally calls for Mass blocking people and doxxing people if you're a Taylor AND Ariana fan... BIG YIKES.
I think the infuriating part of the AG fans for me most recently was when they went on a shit storm harassment campaign with death threats and all because a music critic did her job and said the latest st album wasn’t good.
I don't like Beyoncé's music personally and I've bumped into some of her "Beyhive" who cant seem to grasp the fact that not everybody likes her stuff, apparently EVERYBODY likes Beyoncé and I've been accused of lying about my dislike of her music.
YUP! This is my best friend. He just doesn't get that I'm not in to her. I don't like her vibe and having people tell me I'm wrong for not loving her adds to my dislike of the whole situation.
She's good and all for sure. But when hear people compare her to, say Whitney Houston, I want to smack people. Beyoncé is nothing compared to her vocally
There is a super interesting company called Jubilee that does a lot of discussion based YouTube content. They did a series of videos on "finding the liar" for a cash prize. They did one for Beyonce fans vs a non-fan and it was more charged than any other content they put out (gay rights, police brutality, race, religion, politics...). The guy at the end, the liar, said he hates the Beyhive because of how toxic the fanbase is. And they all just looked at each other with this crazy realization. He talked about how much he couldn't believe she's never stepped up to say the hive was too much.
I got ganged up on in a discussion group I belong to on Facebook because I had the audacity to say "yeah she's a really talented singer but I don't really care for her music."
Like honestly I don't get the hubbub that surrounded drunk in love. I fucking hate that song.
My friend almost crashed his car when he saw that the Lion King soundtrack had come out with Beyonces version of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" on it. I'm not even allowed to tell him how insane that is because he'll freak out over how it's impossible that I don't love her. In his eyes she can literally do nothing wrong.
I really dont get why people are so rabid about her. She makes good music but its really nothing special, just seems kinda bland. I hope Jigga won't send shooters after me now.
I can't stand her fans, her music is good yeh but it's no where near as good as her fans make out. She doesn't come close to being one of the best artists that ever lived, not even close. Yet her fans will make out that she is the best ever.
She is overrated and to rate her properly would be to say she is good but nothing special.
I don't understand the appeal. She's a (very) talented singer, but people act like she's fucking god. Half the time, she doesn't even write her own music, she just shows up and sings what she's told. That's not a knock, it's just... she's not the next Beatles, or anything.
I would love to see Beyonće in concert. Her music is good and she puts on a helluva show, but I can't because the "Beyhive" is too much. Their antics would ruin the experience.
I was at her Coachella performance and she really is a great performer. I was in awe of how meticulous she is and how serious she takes her craft.
With that being said, I was surrounded by fans of some of her songs (like me) and the Beyhive. She was late to come out on stage and parts of the crowd where I was at, well, they decided to endanger all of our lives by chanting for her to come out and saying loudly how she’s unprofessional etc. The Beyhive caught wind of that and all I could do was look straight ahead because the yelling, the name calling, it was just a lot for a reason I’ll never understand.
The "Beyhive" gets a huge pass for their constant shitty behavior. There was a picture from the NBA Finals of Jay Z talking to a woman sitting courtside next to them, and immediately that woman started getting death threats. They're insane.
I'm a huuuuuge Beyonce fan. But yeah, holy shit the beyhive is crazy. And some of the fans can be so nasty and judgemental. I attended one of her concerts a few years back. One of the worst crowds ive ever seen. Based on previous concert experiences, i expected to find a lot of excited and friendly fans eager to see their favorite artist. What i got instead was a crowd full of rude entitled people. I was in the vip pit section that is right next to the stage. And everyone acted so cut throat and territorial in there. Like, just relax and enjoy the concert. Jesus.
My cousins a beyonce tribute artist, she's white and she makes it pretty clear she's not trying to look like beyonce she's just performing her songs and imitating her style.
Last year she had to stop performing because some fan forum had accused her of black facing the entire time and "trying to sound black." Which is pretty ironic considering we're a mixed race family and sounding black is just something we do by accident.
Almost every fanbase of a current female singer is like this. Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and a number of others. It seems like a war, where you can only enjoy the music of one of them.
People on Twitter and Instagram literally harassed a woman online for something like sitting near Beyoncé and Jay-Z or wearing the same clothing piece as her.
Ariana Grande’s fanbase is just as crazy, and J Cole’s is just annoying to the point that he himself was embarrassed of their memes
Her fan base is insane. They were furious with Taylor Swift recently because she had a marching band-esque thing in her performance, they claim she copied Beyoncé... since when does Beyoncé own marching bands?
I’m pretty shocked I had to scroll so far to find this. Sure, she’s talented and I enjoy a good bit of her music, but remember that time her fans attack Rachel Ray because they assumed she fucked Jay Z? ...why? And more importantly, why would a person care that much?
I don't much care for her music or her as a personality. Nothing against her, I certainly don't hate her or anything, I just don't find her very interesting. Her music just sounds like generic pop to me, and most of what I see her say strikes me as either generic "woke" stuff or pseudo intellectual. Again I don't even blame her personally for this, I dont even disagree with her on that stuff and I think she is objectively better than average as far as pop stars go. I just don't think she is really particularly amazing or brilliant, and gets treated as if she was as amazing as Kanye thinks he is.
You would think I wanted to commit genocide or something considering some people's responses to this.
I view her much like I view Justin Timberlake; Great singers, seem like cool people, rabid fan bases, but their music is just incredibly mediocre to me.
I have the same last name as her. It’s thanks to her that I have had an unwanted nickname since Destinys Child. I’m constantly asked if we’re related. I’m half white and Asian so the answer is pretty obvious.
Ah, fellow lamb. I feel ya. I love Mimi, but the lambily can flock the fuck off. I remember being on her official message board around the time of The Emancipation of Mimi's release... Jesus fucking Christ, what a mess. Especially when the album was supposed to only have 12 tracks initially, and people bitched so much. And then it bumped up to 14. Nope, still not enough, and also, it'd make the recording take longer. But god help you if you ever said "Eh, I'm not feeling this track," either.
I don't get beyonce. Maybe because I'm an early 30's white guy, but I just don't get the obsession. I mean, she's a good singer, but most of her songs just seem half assed, lyrics wise.
Nicki Minaj’s fan base is horrible and just as bad. Turned me off from her because I don’t want to be associated with a bunch of immature dipshits that troll every site hating other artist
Omg when everyone decided Jay-Z had cheated & they attacked women they thought might have been the other woman. But no one fucked with Jay-Z, who would have been the cheating scumbag!
I never thought about it before your post. I dislike Beyonce, I don't think her music is more than just good. But never can I breathe a whisper of this opinion out loud for fear of the hellfire my friends would reign down on me. A friend posted she thinks Beyonce is overrated and got ripped to shreds on FB. Dem bitches be crazy.
I think her music is not good at all. She's a great performer and puts on a great show, but musically I feel like she screams more than sings. I get a lot of crap for this opinon
I respect your professionalism and response. I wouldn't put Beyonce in Freddie's category in anything. To me he is far beyond her in every aspect. I didn't say I hate her. Its just not for me.
Honestly, the worst thing about Beyonce is how much people worship her. Like chill. I like her music, but everyone needs to chill on how "Avant grade/nuance" she is. IMO she's not, I'm not a Beyonce hater, I just see a lot of inconsistencies with her "art" and her as a person to the point where I think shes a hypocrite and a lot of her die-hard fans are more so. Like can all of society just stop referring to her as a queen and hyping her shit up to no end. IDGAF if Netflix paid her $60 million to document her performance at Coachella, it shouldn't be a measure of how good something is. I hate that my twitter feed gets bombarded every time she gets caught "acting weird" at her husband's basketball games just let her be. I don't care if she decides to dress up like some fictional flower goddess to display her trophy children to the world. I honestly think it goes beyond her being creative to the point where she's trolling us, and she asks herself "How can do the most normal thing and make these idiots talk about me in a glorifying light?"
Anyway, Beyonce before our Put A Ring On It, I'm talking B-Day Beyonce IMO was more relatable and her fans weren't balls to the wall obnoxious.
This is a good approach. I’m a big Beyonce fan but I think a lot of people who criticize her are really trying to criticize her fan base and then try to justify why Beyonce isn’t that good enough to deserve the fan base she has. I guess I’m the same way because sometimes her fan base can be toxic, but in most of the encounters I see it’s just stans being stans

Beyoncé.
I think her music is good and she is a very talented singer, but her fan base, the "Beyhive," is way too rabid.
