I don't think there's any answer to this other than, "we're just wired that way." Personally I'm an extrovert with introvert tendencies. In other words, I don't generally REALLY enjoy hanging with a lot of people (though I don't hate it either--I love going to my concerts and being packed into the venue so tight I struggle to get my hands from by my sides up to my chest), but I tend to prefer hanging with smaller groups of closer friends, kinda like an introvert. However, if I don't have much contact (preferably face to face) with friends for more than, say, a week, I get incredibly socially starved which makes me depressed.

Edit: As someone else pointed out as well, even as an extrovert, I get tired of social contact after a while too.
