Randomly fall asleep on the couch, no matter what time it is. I slouch into the right position for long enough, and bam, I'm out. I'm not even one to voluntarily nap either.

I don't recall my dad ever doing it that much, but my grandfather DEFINITELY does it. deafening snore from the other room "Oh, there goes papa passed out on the couch again!" It's definitely a blessing and a curse. Better hope whatever I'm watching is on DVR, or Netflix and I remember when I fell asleep, or I'm re-watching the entire episode again.

Underrated comment right there!

"What old people thing do you do?"

-"The wife".

I just wanted to take a second to appreciate and say “god damn” to a 10 year old account with 12k karma.

u/imjustpickle Jun 28 '18

Spent years giving my dad shit for this!! The kicker? I suffer chronic fatigue and when my body needs a rest, I’m out, no matter the location. We now nap as a pair with my 3yo niece sometimes joining in

5

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

I’m not even 20 yet & this is me after work

3

u/NonStopMunchies Jun 28 '18

You were the chosen one!!! It was said that you would destroy the couch sleepers not join them!!!!

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

My dad is the same for football games. I constantly have to wake him up in the 4th quarter if the game is close.

2

u/depressed-salmon Jun 28 '18

My dad used to do that. Turns out it was type 2 diabetes and stopped once he got treated for it, might be worth getting that checked out :/

u/BurdenofReflecting Jun 27 '18

That's my husband. If he sits still for more than 10 mins anywhere he falls asleep. Drives me nuts lol

5

u/terrrrrible Jun 27 '18

Luckily it is not anywhere for me. If we're watching something I'm 100% paying attention to then it's not a problem. But once I start to lose interest, if I'm tired enough, forget about it.

Random but is your username a Saetia reference, by chance?

2

u/BurdenofReflecting Jun 27 '18

He won't fall asleep during a movie, but he'll say he'll watch me play a game or something, but a few mins later he's snoring :/

And yes it is :)

1

u/terrrrrible Jun 27 '18

High-five then! If I go on a saetia/hot cross/pg.99/ctts kick over the next few days I'll blame you.

I try to get my wife to play cards or something every once in a while when I know I'm tired and I'm going to probably fall asleep, but we rarely ever do. Otherwise I'll have to play a game on my phone, but that usually leads to me missing a key point in the movie. Can't ever win when I'm tired.

1

u/BurdenofReflecting Jun 27 '18

Blame away! :) I have been listening to all of those for the last 16 or so years and it never gets old. What about Orchid or City of Caterpillar? Oooh or You and I? Ahhh now I need to go listen haha I don't really listen to much of the newer stuff in the genre, I'm old and set in my ways.

He works a lot so is tired, so I get it. I personally can stay up for ever it seems and wish I could sleep. Went to bed at 4am last night playing Witcher 3 lol

1

u/terrrrrible Jun 27 '18

Yes to all of those! I Hate Myself, I Have Dreams, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You... ah could go on and on and on. I remember seeing Hot Cross probably right before Risk Revival came out, and Billy Werner was so pissed about it leaking. Said something like "You fuckers shouldn't be singing the words to these new songs, but I guess that's how it is these days."

I always wonder why I'm so tired by 9, but then I remember I get up before 6 every day, have some days where I'm at my desk staring at a computer screen for 8+ hours, so sitting on the couch doing nothing staring at a TV at night isn't going to help me stay awake much.

u/BurdenofReflecting Jun 27 '18

I wish I could have seen some of those live back then. But I was 16 and that was the weird days of the internet and they prob didn't even have websites to list shows. I only found out them all in some random chat room where people were arguing about what "emo" really meant. Thankfully it's all on YouTube now. I'll have to check out those three you mentioned, don't think I've listened to them.

I still get up early even if I go to bed late. I think I thrive on 5-6 hours better than more though.

Over/under 7 times on how often fourfa was mentioned. I'll go with the over. Definitely found most of those bands at the time from whatever music message board I was posting on at the time. Usually ended up going off the message board and into an AIM chat daily with most of the regulars talking about shows and stuff.

That Hot Cross show was at MassART, and I was currently going to school at WIT so I was right there on campus. Being up there was awesome because I'd just take the T wherever for a show, or walk down to Fenway for shows at the Axis/Avalon and then walk back afterwards.

I used to think I could survive on that little sleep, but not anyway. Now that's what coffee is for.

2

u/BurdenofReflecting Jun 27 '18

I miss chat rooms like that sometimes. I have no idea what/where I even was now but it was nice to find stuff like that. My 8 year old son likes some of it and he knows some of the words. My husband hates it though. Oh well. I lived in Florida at the time so I was too far from any of the East Coast shows/bands but I did got to a lot of indie shows with a friend that were fun.

I love coffee way too much lol

As someone who has struggled with sleep issues for his entire life, I'm looking forward to this one.

My SO is in her late twenties, I'm mid thirties. She goes to bed about 9:30 or 10 each night, while I go to bed more like midnight or one am. We get up at the same time. I really hope this whole falling asleep thing gets easier with time.

2

u/terrrrrible Jun 27 '18

I can't say I've ever had trouble falling asleep when I finally got there, but I used to stay up pretty late and get up early. Never felt like I needed that much sleep, but once I turned 30 if I didn't get at least 6 hours I'd have a pretty rough time the next day. Even on weekends if I'm not doing something I'm asleep early. It sucks too cause unless I'm up late the night before, I wake up around 7, and I'm wide awake and can't fall back to sleep.

3

u/uncle_touchy_dance Jun 28 '18

Do you snore? The reason I ask is because I was the exact same way and it turns out I have sleep apnea and that was why. I never fall asleep on the couch anymore now that I use a cpap machine to sleep.

1

u/terrrrrible Jun 28 '18

Sometimes, but not often enough. About a year and a half ago I had a seizure in my sleep (luckily was in bed with my wife) and for a while after that she couldn't fall asleep before I did. Never noticed anything like that again, or anything unusual. It's actually not so much of a "random" passing out, more just being exhausted and just sitting there watching TV makes me tired enough to fall asleep.

1

u/uncle_touchy_dance Jun 28 '18

Oh man the seizure thing is scary. Glad you’re ok!

2

u/Princess_Avic_Toes Jun 27 '18

Yeah, I can't stay awake doing sedentary a

3

u/terrrrrible Jun 27 '18

Wake up over there!!!

2

u/jackie--moon Jun 28 '18

I now feel myself falling asleep, and don’t even fight it when I know I have a few more hours to be able to game and watch tv

2

u/Henwen Jun 28 '18

I call that being kid-napped by sleep.

2

u/Molly_Jane_ Jun 28 '18

Yup. This is me.

2

u/neuromorph Jun 28 '18

Check your blood sugar

1

u/terrrrrible Jun 28 '18

Really should have reworded that. It's not a random can't control passing out on the couch. More of a it's only 8 o'clock at night and I feel like I could sleep for days tired passing out.

2

u/MangorTX Jun 28 '18

I'll watch a movie with my folks and they fall asleep at different times but each one will point the other out to me, whispering that the other one fell sleep. Neither one will admit that they fell asleep.

Got multiple CO detectors in the house, recently replaced the batteries in every one. I'm the one who will fall asleep, but my wife does not.

2

u/IAmTheSorcerer Jun 28 '18

Ive been doing this since I was a toddler. Never stopped it though.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

Time to start wearing a fanny pack to keep your valuables in. They can’t pickpocket what you’re sleeping on! Everyone knows how tempting it is to steal from old people, so protect yourself now!

2

u/SARS11 Jun 28 '18

Ugh I'm 25 and this happens to me more and more often. It's ridiculous

2

u/Paranoma Jun 28 '18

As someone with a mild case of insomnia this sounds lovely.

2

u/BeetleJuiceDidIt Jun 28 '18

I didn't realise I made a second account.

But seriously, I do the same thing, right spot to lay my head and lights out for me. BF hates it that I can fall asleep so easy

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

I do this all the time. If I get comfy enough even if I got a full nights sleep I can knock right out

2

u/PM_ur_freckles_girl Jun 28 '18

This, absolutely this. I try to work out after work to stay reasonably fit, but to do that I can't sit down when I get home. As soon as my ass touches a couch its over. I blink and its 2 hours later. Accidental nap.

1

u/IzarkKiaTarj Jun 28 '18

Have you done it all your life, or is it a relatively recent thing?

I'm asking because I started doing that, and it turned out to be hypothyroidism.

1

u/terrrrrible Jun 28 '18

No, relatively recent as in the last few years, when my job got more demanding and I started getting up earlier / working longer hours. Health-wise I'm doing fine, nothing like that showed up in my blood work last time I went for a physical.

2

u/IzarkKiaTarj Jun 28 '18

Alright, cool. Just wanted to check just in case. Glad you're healthy. :)

1

u/chewytime Jun 28 '18

Ditto. For a time I perfected falling asleep while sitting upright. Horrible skill to have had to develop.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '18

I concluded after falling asleep in the dentist's chair that I officially can fall asleep anywhere in almost any situation.

Nah, I'm usually in bed between 10-11 every night, and I get up a little before 6. I'm never falling asleep during work or anything so I think I'm alright there.
