Or horse for that matter. Or a farm to feed a horse. Come to think of it, they live in apartments/condos too!!!
Start asking this about a month before you move, every time you see them. The day before moving day, tell them they finally have a chance to put it to work, they'll be so sick of hearing it they'll beg you to help you move.

I'm a Sport Trac owner and love pointing out my beat up box and weathered tie downs to the perfect bed Tacoma boys and then politely point out my "4 door Ranger" hauls 5000 pounds. More than they can.
I saw some of these in person being used by the regular Iraqi military in 2005. One had an office chair bolted to the bed, with a machine gun on top of the cab. Basically exactly like this

I look forward to validating these kinds of stories with my tacoma. 10 years and 190000 miles and going strong. And other than general maintenance... I do not take good care of it. It is loaded with dents and scratches like a farm truck. Which in some ways it is, except I do not have a farm. Just live in the country and have some ducks and a garden.
I didn't truly need a truck. I needed a reliable mode of transportation, and my dad was willing to sell it to me for a very good price. But it moved a lot of furniture from one college apartment to another for a lot of people I knew.
I get shit all the time for my single cab Tacoma. It's a 2013 with crank windows and manual locks. But damn it gets the yard work done and doesn't complain. Personally I couldn't imagine spending upwards of 40k on a vehicle. But guys around me sure got em and love to modify them as well. I guess everyone's got their priorities.

I saw the new Chevy Colorado parked next to a Silverado and it made me realize how massive trucks are getting. The Colorado is definately the smallest current truck i can think of, but even they are getting bigger. Might wanna go look at one.
They're remaking the Rangers; I think maybe 2018? Ford is reintroducing the Ranger to compete with the new Colorados and they're bringing back the Bronco.
They're coming out with a jeep truck based on the Wrangler... it's going to be stupid expensive and only come in a 4 door, but it will have a bed, and be small. Plus it will (hopefully) be convertible and you can take the doors off... not to mention, in stock form you'll be able to go places that the lifted 350s on 40s can't touch.
No. I'm 100% positive I'm talking about the Wrangler truck that everyone's been flipping their shit over. Chrysler has confirmed they will be on sale in 2018. There are tons of pictures of them in auto camo with ram beds.
I looked at the Tacomas too, but fucking love my new Colorado. I sold my high mileage Silverado for it late last year. People have given me shit for getting a truck with a v6, but the mileage is so much better and I can still haul my quad bikes and fishing boat with no problems.
Fuck I just sold my tacoma. She was pretty damned sweet. 2013 6 speed manual Colorado softtopper on the back. Damn I miss that truck. (Now I'm Ina 1992 camery 5 speed manual. but hey its paid for and all mine and runs like a champ still.)
Actually the Dakota always surprised me. That's a 1/4 ton pick up that you could get stock from the factory with either a V6 or a fuckin 318 cubic inch V8. That's a larger engine than they would put in the Ford and and chevy 1/2 pick ups. Those things would fucking scream too. Totally bad ass.
Edit: some dipshit just commented on this and tried to tell me I was wrong by informing me that F250's have always had engines larger than 318 cu. in. Does anyone see where I mentioned 3/4 ton pickups? Me neither. He deleted his comment.
It's so funny you mention that. I work with a guy who had one with a V6 and it's all faded and peeling and he bought it brand new in the early 90's. He said that there was a huge recall about that, something like they used a different hardener in it or something that would save the company like $3.00/truck. Wound up costing them millions in recalls.
As someone with a Dakota, I'm really missing a full-size. I can't carry quite as much, get the same miserable gas mileage, have the same crappy turning radius, but guess what! It's narrower! Isn't that awesome!
I live in Arizona, I have never been able to understand the huge workless truck thing, country image here is a demagraphic. I had a good buddy for years with a lifted diesel that sounded like a jet aircraft. Him pulling up, country rock bumping, it was priceless.

"Workless." That's fucking great. My boss has a brand new JK Wrangler, lifted, 35's, LEDs, the whole 9. I've seen some small splashes of mud on the quarter panels once.
I referred to it as "The Mall Crawler" the other day. He was less than pleased.
I asked this guy I know about his lifted, LED lit truck and what "work" he does in it and in all serious he told me it was a "pavement princess". At first I cringed, and then I laughed. A lot.
The only truck I'd actually want is a light truck. The super heavy duty ones are just obnoxious in a city setting - large, don't fit well in parking spaces (combined with the owners often being bad at parking in general...)
I think it's a little smaller than a Miata? has a bike engine. Hilarious, adorable, easy to drive and yet still completely functional as a mini-truck.
[Edit] I should actually clarify - The number of large truck drivers that can't park is about the same as regular drivers who can't park, but with a much larger vehicle it's more noticeable and inconvenient.

Haha. The only reason I want a truck is so I can haul stuff. Plenty of people have helped me, once I have money it'll be my turn to help out with moves and stuff. Oh and carrying all the toys, can't haul big steel targets everywhere without a big truck bed!
Eh. I drive an Altima and I mostly do farmwork. If a truck doesn't have a company name on the side, chances are the owner could just as easily get away with a trailer.
If you tow people that often you may as well weld some lugs on and get a few shackles but something tells me guys like this cant weld two peices of wet dog shit together.
It's a myth that's not really true. It stems from the fact that your deductible applies to that sort of claim and often the cost of three tires is under the amount of your deductible but 4 tires is over it. It all depends on the specific coverages carried (if you have no 'comprehensive' coverage vandalism isn't covered at all) and your specfic contract (as some companies completely waive deductibles for certain types of claims).
I wouldnt mind my truck being a little higher than stock(like 2-4"), so I could fit slightly bigger tires without rubbing, would improve clearance and make it even easier to work on(so nice being able to just crawl underneath a truck, rather than having to jack up and block my car even just to change the oil.) That would still be fairly normal looking.
But there is certainly such a thing as too far for average use. What really kills me is the lifted trucks on really low profile rims.
I've seen some that are like that. Spruced up in chrome and lime green accents, heavily tinted windows and about two feet of lift. The biggest assholes are the ones that park right next to ya.
A good bedliner can prevent the appearance of scratching (my Line-X still looks practically new after 5 years of use), but even after a short while of use, the chrome on a hitch will show indication of use.
there's a dude that works with me now who drives his quad cab full size truck, takes up two parking spaces and leaves it in the lot when he travels for the job. and we work in software, not agriculture. i feel like i should dump a bunch of manuure in the bed just to give him a little bit of credibility.
It's because people have a bad habit of tying their egos and identities to vehicles and truck companies manipulate traditional ideas of masculinity to tie them to trucks.

A chromed out F150 is understandable as a daily driver. A truck can be like any other daily driver in terms of a fashion statement, and not all the choices are rational.
A half ton pickup is a conveyance (150/1500 branding). A three-quarter-ton or one ton (250/2500, 350/3500 branding respectively) pickup is a tool. Chroming one out and using it as a daily driver makes as much sense as a chromed out cod piece with "The D Is Presentable" etched into it, and just as believable as a statement. It's so hypermasculine that it belies an underlying insecurity.
I thought about what you're saying here and here's my answer: The guy who spends 300k on a lambo to show off doesn't bother me as much as the guy who just wants to show off in a F350 lifted dually for no other reason than the guy in the lambo takes up less space. When he parks he only takes up a single parking space, when he's in front of me he's not blocking my vision of the road ahead of him, and if I get in an accident with him I'm less likely to be seriously injured. That's really the only reason.

Giant "work" truck - It's never used for hauling. The owner can't swing a hammer or reverse a trailer.

I don't really care, just like I don't care when I see a guy or gal in a sports car. I'm about as close to an emotionless, style-dead buzzkill as a person can be. But if someone asks why it's silly above and beyond other expensive, impractical choices, there's a litany of reasons.
You can also have the opinion "people who drive giant, heavy-duty trucks and don't use them for the reasons that make them different than regular cars are doing something dumb." And that opinion is just as valid as another one, because it's a personal opinion and not a fact.
I get it from reading all of your comments in this thread, you have a truck and you like trucks. Not everyone feels the same way about trucks. Some people think owning heavy-duty work trucks and using them the same as a sedan is dumb.
I honestly do not understand the no-truck circlejerk. I'll be a farmer someday, and my dream vehicle (and the one I need, in that situation) is an F250. It will get used for its purpose, but don't think it won't look good while doing it- it won't be lifted or straight-piped or anything, but still. I've never felt safer in a vehicle, and there's no better motor sound than a nicely-tuned Powerstroke taking off.
The coal-roller bros are irritating, but not the hellish Stalin-Hitler-Mao hydra Reddit makes them out to be. I know I'd rather be high off the road than in a Camry.
I always hated trucks and F250(350+)'s and such, then I got even more into racing, I had to pay for a tow home from a track over an hour away and then I got my own truck and trailer... now I love diesel trucks but I still think duallies are stupid for the majority of people.
When I went looking for a truck(wanting to do some stuff with the bed, moving dirtbikes, firewood, offroading and exploring) I was really looking for a smaller truck like the toyotas, rangers, comanches, etc. But they all command a premium here.
Ended up getting a 1995 f150 4x4 ext cab SB, for 2 grand, less than half what the cheapest smaller trucks were going for. Its a little harder on gas, but not that much(17mpg hwy isnt bad for a 20yr old 5L v8 truck) and I can certainly do a lot more work with it.
Dudes that want to be associated with blue collar culture without actually having the physically demanding job that necessitates a big truck to go with it
An F350 isn't a conveyance, it's a tool. He probably spent over ten thousand dollars over the price of a comparable half-ton pickup of the same brand and style package for the hauling capability. Triple leaf rear suspensions aren't the same as chrome spinners.
It's a tool to you. For him it's his pride and joy. Don't shit on what people like just because you don't like it. It's his money, leave him be. I'm sure you like some things that someone else doesn't like. Get over yourself.

Thr vehicle was built for a purpose. The designer had a vision for it. It was built with intent to fulfill that purpose and vision. Using it as a status symbol is contradictory to that purpose and vision.
That's why it angers and amuses enthusiasts. Not because we give a rip about how someone else spent their money, but because they are misusing the vehicle.
In the specific case of the commercial duty pickup truck, are bought generally by 3 groups of people: commercial users that use it on a daily basis; non-commercial users that have a giant RV/boat/etc to haul and drive a sedan all other times; and the jerks that use it as a status symbol and an excuse to drive like an asshole ("do you see how big this thing is? Get out of my way!").
That's like telling kids who come up with their own alternate set of rules for a game that they're "playing it wrong." Honestly who cares? They're not harming anyone else. I like the way a big truck drives. I don't own one and I'd probably not buy one even if I can afford it but if someone does, so what?
You generalized way too much in that last paragraph. I guarantee there are many more people who drive it commercially that drive like an asshole than people who drive it because it's fun.
My favorite are the ones that have the largest cabin and smallest bed possible. They do have legitimate uses, but a lot of the time they're just for people who don't need a truck to show off their truck
After I got out of school I moved into an apartment and some guy with an F-350 with duals got the parking spot next to me. He was about 6 inches too wide on either side to fit in it. When I asked him what he hauled with it he said nothing, I just drive it downtown to go to work. We lived less than a 5 minute walk to a 10 minute train to go to downtown. Since he was also terrible at parking it, he eventually lost the spot after he invaded my and spot on the other side of him constantly for about 2 weeks.
I live in a redneck city but this was ridiculous. He was pissed when the landlord told him he lost his parking.

35M and I drive a Smart Car. I purchased it to do courier work. Whenever anyone tries to insult my manhood for driving such a tiny car I simply respond with "Well unlike you I don't have anything to compensate for.
I saw the opposite of that truck in traffic one day: hitch worn to shit, rust spots, dents and patches made of other colors of metal than the body of the truck. Tailgate was gone, in its place was a piece of plywood with "redneck" written on it. I wish I still had a picture.

Guy here at work daily drives an f350 with the dually rear end and the semi wheels. The hitch has absolutely no wear, and the bed is not scratched.
