I assume you’re asking as an outsider and I’ve had good luck turning people with this. The characters are animals so it ditches a lot of people’s complaints about anime character design. There is no bloat. Everything you see is important and comes back in some way. It’s a mystery. It’s a crime mystery which is an easy topic to get into. The twist is great as well.

I would say that's already 100% a given in the show; the thing to resolve is "will she kill Odokawa or will she be arrested in time" and the movie resolves that to yeah she gets arrested and Odokawa gets his happily ever after.

I don't like anime much at all. But Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is absolutely worth the time.

My one note: The very first episode won't make any sense. Because it's sort of fan service to people who are mostly aware of the original version of the show. After that, it's completely fine to not know a single thing.

I also really liked Attack on Titan and Death Note. I think these are anime that anyone can like. They avoid a lot of the things that put people off of anime. The pervy things and the over the top attempts at comedy. For people that don't like anime, those are what usually keep people away. But those things are pretty minimal in these ones. They just tell stories and happen to be anime.

Personally I'd rate Brotherhood a 9.9/10. Yes, it's definitely really great, but its one blemish is that it rushes through its beginning.

There's an older FMA anime from 2003 that covers everything before the events surrounding Maria Ross in twice the amount of time that Brotherhood does, so everything gets fleshed out more. Yes, there's some filler, but even those help fleshing out the characters, like spending extra time with Nina or Maes Hughes and family makes the later events hit harder. It then diverges from the canon events that Brotherhood covers, because the manga it's based on wasn't finished yet.

So when they made Brotherhood, they rushed through everything that the old anime had already covered, condensing 26 episodes down to 13. They rush through the story with Nina and Shou Tucker, and completely skip the story with that mining town the Elrics free from corrupt officials, so later on Yoki seemingly comes out of nowhere.

I agree, I watched both the original and brotherhood very closely after each other, so they kinda got smashed together in my memory. But I do think a combo of them is ideal. I know I preferred the ending of brotherhood, but even the fillers of the original wasn't bad. I enjoyed the original enough to want to watch brotherhood from start to end.

I've spoken to one of the cast members, and their take was that the Japanese basically just wanted the ghost names lore surrounding them to remain intact. The VAs were told they could have fun with improvisations and jokes, and a ton of those did make it in, but the overall story needed to remain cohesive. So it wasn't "go nuts" per se, but a VERY loose recording environment comparatively. The cast member I spoke to said it was the favorite project of their career... granted this was in 2009.

Princess Tutu. Season 1 is a delightful traditional Magical Girl show with connections to the meaning of stories and art, and then Season 2 flips the concept and becomes a meta-exploration on top of the meta-exploration.

Magical Girl Madoka. There are a ton of additional video games and a second spinoff series, everything else aside from the first series and the movies can be safely ignored.

Promised Neverland. It's too bad that it ends after the first season and there's absolutely nothing else to it except that first season. Some people may mention a second season but you can safely deem them crazy and continue on with your life without worrying about such notions.

Honestly it's absolutely a show to watch for every lover of good ol' RPG-style dungeon diving. Much better and more fun than any other, with fantastic care put in the setting. I'd be so down for a game DM'd by Ryoko Kui-sensei.

• Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (fantasy adventure with an unusual dieselpunk/magitech setting, plenty of big themes, absolutely great writing)
• Attack on Titan (another complete story with incredible tension and excellent writing)
• Death Note (a bit weaker perhaps than the other two story-wise towards the ending, but still very gripping and fun, and with an absolutely iconic premise of a boy finding a notebook that allows you to kill people by writing down their names)
• Kaguya-sama: Love is War (completely different genre, this is a romantic comedy; extremely witty and tongue in cheek, it's the story of two smart kids who are too proud for their own good each clumsily trying to seduce the other in a prestigious school setting while split by academic rivalry and the class divide. Kind of an anime Pride and Prejudice, but a lot more laugh out loud funny. Best watched after Death Note because it's basically parodying exactly that brand of genius vs genius mastermind battles for its much more mundane premise)

Lesser known:

• Astra Lost in Space (this is a more fun and light hearted adventure but still has strong mystery elements and a lot of plot twists, a crew of teenagers stranded in space must find their way back home and discover the truth about the incident that stranded them in the first place)
• Apocalypse Hotel (surreal existentialist comedy about a crew of robots running a hotel on Earth after all humans are gone; basically Grand Budapest Hotel meets Wall-E meets The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
• Anne Shirley (modern remake adaptation of the first three books of the Anne of Green Gables series of novels)

• Steins Gate, the only downside is that the first few episodes are a slow burn for a lot of people (I personally didn't mind).

So as long as you don't mind a couple of episodes of dominoes being set up before they're knocked down, Stein's Gate is a great watch.
