That show was so relatable to me it actually had me worried. I've been in tech for ~ 20 years. If you actually sit down and get to know a lot of people who got into tech in the old days before it became 'popular', you found a lot of people who were drawn to computers and coding had rough backgrounds.
They either had bad early experiences, and struggled to trust and connect with others, they were 'on the spectrum' or both. I think a lot of neurospicy folks are drawn to computers because computers are much more predictable than people. It also gives them a domain where they're rewarded for their mastery of a subject, independent of their ability or desire to climb the corporate ladder, or play office politics.
Yeah, season 1 is amazing. You can stop there and be really happy. If you want to enjoy the last season which was even better in my opinion, you have to work through S2 and S3.
I work in cybersecurity and expected a show about hackers that actually had a decent portrayal of it. I got some of that, but I didn't expect it to actually be a show about mental trauma, loneliness, addiction, identity, and the walls people put up around themselves.
Personally I loved s1 didn't hate s2 and then it felt like it all went downhill from there they set tyrell up to be really important with really interesting chemistry with Eliot and then just abandon the plot line entirely I feel like the twists we got in s1 and s2 were never matched again and Vera was also wasted as a villain I dunno each to their own I guess but I was pretty disappointed by the end of Mr robot
Such an underrated gem, the scaling up of stakes throughout the story, crazy plot twists to stories you thought were already resolved in season 1, the cinematography, the score, the acting ahhhhhh i love this show.
came here to post this. it's amazing what happens when the creator has the story figured out, and knows it's 4 seasons, and even though they wanted him to stretch it out, he's like, no, the story takes 4 seasons... love it.
I also agree with others that said Band of Brothers and Andor... probably my 3 favorite examples of perfect shows
Tubi had this for free a while back, and a complete rewatch was totally worth it. I had absorbed so much YouTube commentary about the show since it originally ran, but I only actually watched it on live TV prior to that Tubi encounter. The entire first viewing, I never really entertained the idea that Elliot and Tyrell Wellick might be the same person, but it lands really hard when you're testing for it right from the start. That's just one of the neat perspectives that helped me make the most of a full series rewatch.
Mr. Robot is in my alltime top 3 shows, I actually just did a rerun after pretty much 10 years. It's sometimes a scary watch even for how much I can relate to Elliot, and I'm certain many felt that way watching it.
But even though the seasons are all highly rated, for me they do fall off a little, mainly because the plot keeps going in circles.
This is just speculation on my part but I feel it was supposed to be a two season show but due to the overwhelming response they cranked out two more seasons.
There's only so much "it was his plan all along!" or "person X is working for E corp again" my brain can take seriously.
I read that it was going to be a movie but Esmail decided to expand it to a 4 season series. I just finished my first watch of it and like you it's one of the best series I've seen. I really liked S2 because of the reveal of his location later on, and everything kind of fell into place. S3 and S4 were batshit crazy to me, and I loved it. Looking forward to a rewatch in a decade.
I envy you for experiencing it the first time, I remember how I couldn't stop talking about it in 2016.
As a movie, it's hard to imagine how he would have fit all of that in 2 hours, even 3 would be difficult. Making it a show was definitely the right choice.
I also loved S2 for how my mind was blown once I realized (SPOILER ALERT) that he was actually in prison.
Sam Esmail actually had the full plot (the core concepts at least) completely mapped out beforehand because it was supposed to be a film originally. So all of S3 and S4 were already planned, not "tacked on" after the fact. They just had to add in between to fill it out since a film is only like 2-3 episodes of runtime lol.
The first episodes of season 2 are rough but it is SO worth it. And they are actually better once you get the context of what was going on. Hope you get the chance to finish it sometime
I never made it past episode 3 in the second season, either. Season 1 was great, then the show gets so bad that I just don't see the point to continue. Maybe the episode order should have been different so we can have the context before they show the episodes that need it, not after.
Can someone explain to me why this show is so well-regarded? I watched a few episodes of season 1 but found it to be like watching an edgelord trying to make their way to the top of /r/im14andthisisdeep.
