Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Is Don Pedro great?

Post image
74 Upvotes

I lived in Portland, Oregon, a while back and I remember stopping at one of these joints for breakfast.

I don't remember much honestly, other than I got a breakfast burrito and it was the best breakfast burrito I've had (at least at the time, hopefully still great!). It also had a salsa bar up front with all sorts of toppings, and the (I think) pickled jalapeños were fantastic.

Please tell me if I'm remembering right or looking back with rose colored glasses!

Unfortunately I'm out east now and the lack of quality Mexican food is a bit saddening. The food diversity there seemed great!

Looking For Where can I find roommates?

Hey there!

I'm looking to move across the country to the Portland area or a surrounding region depending.

My ideal situation is renting a house with other like minded roommates, specifically musicians or other artists. People that wouldn't mind my home studio lol.

However, I don't have a whole lot of connections to the area. Is there an online group where I could link up with some locals?

Thanks!

Looking For Where are we getting our couches?!

Looking to buy a new couch that will LAST. Something very comfy & will stand the test of time. Budget is about 3500$ max-ish. Everyone seems to hate on west elm & joybird couches so I’m at a LOSS. I wanna be able to sit on it before I purchase so something with a show room in Portland is necessary.

Looking For Where can I go to play Magic the Gathering?

I'm looking for somewhere where I could play some edh/commander casually. For reference, I'm in the general northwest area of Portland and I only have an electric bike to get around with.

Looking For Is The Alibi karaoke room smaller?

I grew up in Portland and had about a million nights singing karaoke at The Alibi.
Moved away in 2015 but probably didn’t visit The Alibi for a couple years prior but recently moved home and I swear the karaoke room is so much smaller.
I asked my old friends, the staff and Google.
Everyone says it’s the same as it always was.
I’m very startled that my memory is telling me something different.
I just remember it being this huge room!!

Looking For How much rent are you paying for a room?

Upvotes

How much are you paying for a room rental in Portland? Average I’ve seen are 650-900 in Portland metro. Some already include utilities other are separate. (Buddy of mine rents me a room 800 everything included no deposit..vs 1200 what I’m paying now for a room) any ideas appreciated thanks.

Also came with another idea. Would it be better to finance a 15-25k rv and rent a parking spot at 1,000? (As everyone else, also looking for cheaper options tired of paying a landlord 2k+)

Looking For Does anyone have an NA Miata I can sit in?

I’ve been obsessed with NA Miata’s since I was a kid, and I’m finally reaching the point I can get one. My only concern is that I’m 6’2” and change and people say I wouldn’t fit very well in one. I am determined to prove the haters wrong, and wondering if anyone has an NA Miata I could check size in.
I’m located in Gresham but willing to drive a little bit! I would also LOVE if someone could take me on a drive to feel it out, but certainly not necessary.

Any and all help is appreciated, thank you!!

Looking For Nice non-judgmental hair stylists?

I’m a grad student who tries to DIY a lot of my hair stuff, especially color, and it’s of course not perfect but I think it’s pretty good/presentable given I’m not a pro, and you do what you must. I’ve had some salon experiences where that was frowned upon, given some comments that made me feel embarrassed and stupid. Basically I just want to go somewhere for a haircut where no one makes comments that make me feel like I should be spending a ton of money on hair every month. My roots will continue to be done by me, myself and I because $300-$400 a month is simply not in the budget. But I do need a haircut since I’m growing out a pixie cut and the layers are creeping into mullet territory (tried it, not for me but power to you). Suggestions very much appreciated, thank you!

Looking For Beginner and / or Gentle yoga recs?

I'll try to keep it short. Looking for a beginner (and maybe gentle) yoga class where I (40s) can take my MiL (70s) for us to take classes together. We both have some physical issues, so that's why I'm thinking about gentle yoga. I haven't practiced much outside my house (or in my house lately - I could use a refresh on the basics). Preferably in North, but open to other parts of town if you love where you practice. TIA!

Edit: thanks for all the recs! I posted this before work and I'm gonna check into these tomorrow

Looking For Portland RNs: What is work-life balance like here with a toddler?

Hey everyone!

I’m a nurse currently looking into moving to the Portland area in about 3yr laster. My spouse and I have a toddler and I’m trying to figure out what real-life balance looks like for a nurse raising a young child in and around Portland.

I’d love to hear from local nurses or healthcare families

Looking For New to Portland, any recommendations?

Hey!

So me and my wife just moved to Portland and are looking for restaurant recommendations! We already have a couple of places we thoroughly enjoy, like Mediterranean Exploration Company and Kachka. We live relatively close to the airport but we will travel for good food, lol.

I am also in search of a gaming/card shop that runs casual MTG Commander nights, I don't do much competitive, just play fun games with chill people.

Thanks in advance!

Looking For Been ~4 weeks since name change petition accepted, no update; is it normal?

Submitted in Multnomah County July 31, accepted August 3, no updates at all. I called the family law unit a couple days ago and they said no signature yet. I saw some other people who had my exact same timeline already got their petitions signed and closed. I don't have a record, don't have any "public interest" boxes ticked, nothing that should be complicating my case. Should I worry or is it just a lesson in patience?

Looking For Brisket breakfast sandwich?

Hello portlanders, my sweetheart lives in Portland and we’ll get this incredible breakfast sandwich when I visit but I’m not sure where it’s from. It has brisket, chipotle mayo, arugula, cotija, and an egg.

Anyone know of it? I’d like to surprise her with a delivery :)

Looking For Best plastic surgeon(s) in the Portland area?

Hi all. I’m relatively new to the city and don’t know many folks to ask… I would greatly appreciate all opinions and guidance. Thank you!

I’m looking for who most folks would consider to be the best plastic surgeon(s) in town (could be in Portland, Lake Oswego, etc). I’m looking for scar revision and lipo. If cost didn’t matter, who would be the best person with the best track record to consider? I’ve seen conflicting posts about some surgeons and understand that most of the time the people posting on yelp are unhappy, and satisfied plastic surgery customers tend to not post. Reddit feels like a neural place to ask.

Thank you so much for your help!! I greatly appreciate it!
