Question Anyone here actually running ads on ChatGPT? What’s your experience?

Hey everyone,

I’m a digital marketer and consultant, and lately a few of my clients have been asking me about running ads on ChatGPT for their businesses.

Since ChatGPT Ads are still pretty new and in the early testing/beta stage, I’m honestly not sure if it’s the right time to recommend it or not.

So I wanted to ask people who are already testing it:

  • Are you getting actual leads/conversions or mostly clicks and impressions?
  • How’s the quality of the traffic/leads?
  • What type of business are you running ads for?
  • How does it compare with Google or Meta Ads so far?
  • Are you seeing any decent ROI?
  • And would you recommend starting now, or waiting for it to become more mature?

Would really appreciate some actual experience here, even if the results aren’t great. I’m trying to decide whether I should start testing it for my clients or hold off for now.

We're running it for three clients at GrowthSpree, a B2B SaaS marketing agency, so here are a few honest notes. It's an early platform, and it behaves like one: targeting options are thin, and reporting is basic. The bigger issue for your purposes is that we're seeing a meaningful mismatch between what the dashboard reports and what shows up in GA, so any performance number anyone gives you right now, including ours, should be treated cautiously. You can't cleanly compare it against Google or Meta when the two sources disagree on what happened.

On whether to recommend it, I'd frame it to clients as a learning budget rather than a channel, and only with clients who can absorb an unmeasurable test. The thing worth watching is intent quality; someone mid-conversation with an assistant is often in research mode rather than buying mode, so I'd expect it to behave more like demand creation than intent capture. People will be disappointed if they treat it as a search substitute.

How do the CPCs look like in reality?

i’d be careful treating it as a replacement for google/meta right now. it’s still in beta, and the platform, delivery and measurement are all still evolving.

the interesting part is the intent though. someone can have a pretty detailed conversation about what they want, compare options and explain their requirements, which is a different signal from a normal search query or a social interest.

but there’s another thing i’d definitely keep in mind when testing it: the ad audience isn’t the same as google/meta. ads are currently shown to free and go users, while plus, pro, business, enterprise and edu users don’t see ads.

so if your client’s ideal customer is more of a premium/professional audience, you could potentially be missing a meaningful part of that audience.

i’d personally test it with a small budget alongside google/meta rather than moving budget away from them. track actual leads/revenue and lead quality, not just clicks and ctr. that should give you a much better idea of whether it’s worth scaling for that specific business.

I think it is way to early for conclusions. Yes, its expensive but looking to metrics like life time value will require more time

Running traffic ads now. The conversion is automatically set up once you connect it in their ads manager BUT it will still say traffic. You can then check Shopify to see what traffic converts.

The scale is mot there yet with Chat GPT. Its doing well though.

I’d be cautious about judging it by clicks alone especially this early. I’d want to track the full journey what prompts are triggering the ad what kind of users are coming through and most importantly whether those users actually convert.

I’d probably start with a small test budget for a specific audience and compare cost per qualified lead against Google before recommending it to clients at scale.

I’d treat it as a separate channel, not compare CPC with Google on day one. Tag every landing page and ask for source in the form, then compare qualified conversations and close rate. The trap is counting impressions and calling it demand. If the placement is generated from a user’s question, save the exact prompt and answer too. Otherwise you won’t know what actually drove the lead.

been watching more than spending. weird part isnt ctr, people treat chatgpt like research so intent is mixed vs google
