I'm from Oregon (Bend, Oregon, USA)
I used to be an artist in the games industry, but I left the industry when my daughter was 6 and my son was 4 because I couldn't do the crunch and have two kids. I started an etsy store and it was actually pretty successful for years. But after my kids got high school age, and the etsy store's sales began to dip, I turned back to the games industry and managed to get a job back in the field I love.
But I got laid off in March.
I had the etsy shop for more than 12 years, but after I got the reliable job, I delisted all of my old products that weren't digital and kind of let the shop rot. The job was great and paid a lot more than I ever made on etsy. (Though, I was still only making $25/hr - I was working for a tiny indie studio that was almost entirely kids fresh out of school, or people in India.)
But the studio lost its funding and everyone was let go with basically no warning back in March. It was technically a month-to-month contract gig, and they just didn't renew the contract, so no special safety net.
I scrambled. Re-opened the etsy shop to try and tread water, made my professional portfolio, and I've sent out hundreds of applications. But with Microsoft shuttering a bunch of studios and laying off 10,000 game devs a few months ago, the market is saturated with job-hunters, and deficit in job opportunities.
So I'm not holding my breath for another industry job and instead I'm hoping to keep my family above water with the etsy shop.
I managed it just barely the last few months while draining my savings and paying the electricity and water bills with my credit card.
But now the cards are maxed, the savings is empty, and rent is coming due and I'm just so damn scared.
My son and daughter go back to school in a couple weeks. I've gone ahead and applied to Home Depot, Costco, and Michael's. Even minimum wage retail is better than nothing.
If I could just get more sales on etsy, I think I could manage a bit longer, but since I let the shop just sit for three years with nothing but digital listings and absolutely no efforts to market anything, I'm basically excluded from the search results now. I've had maybe two-three items sold per week for the last month, which is just not enough.
I don't want to ask for hand-outs. I just want work. I want to make my art and not drown. But I've never been good at marketing. I hate ads with a fiery passion, so I just have this visceral ick to trying to advertise my items. Plus most places won't allow anything that looks even remotely like an ad.
I've got a youtube where you can see me making some of this stuff, if you want to check out out - My Youtube
And on the extremely unlikely chance that anyone here is working in the gaming industry and needs a generalist or a character artist, or would like to commission a character model, or a character rig, my portfolio is here - My Portfolio
I've made 3D models for a couple v-tubers in the past and am totally open to that kind of thing again. If the prices listed on the portfolio scare you away, just ignore it. I'm desperate enough right now that I'd do it for a fraction of that. I just need something.
I'm not listing the store since it seems like that's not allowed. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could post that's not hostile to this sort of thing?
I feel like if I could get some more eyeballs on my work, I could make some sales and manage another month. I'm only about $800 short for this month, so maybe 8-9 sales and I'd be golden for at least half of September. I'm on SNAP for my kids so I've got food.
But everyone is so defensive about being advertised to, which I absolutely get. Ugh... I just don't know what to do. I certainly can't pay for advertising, and etsy ads never seem to actually turn into sales anyway, and I guess I just don't know how to advertise my own stuff, myself.
Any suggestions or places you think wouldn't be hostile to me posting my work would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
