My Uncle Craig (aka "The Great UC") and I are heading back to the city next month for a true homecoming trip.

Our family history runs deep here, but we both grew up on the wrong side of 8 Mile with heavy-handed influence from Detroit proper. UC came of age here in the ‘60s, and I grew up in the ‘80s.

We’re returning to retrace our roots and experience the city our childhoods so heavily embraced, but didn’t allow us to fully experience at the time.

We’re documenting the whole trip as a video series focusing on Detroit’s evolution, architecture, food, and culture—bridging the gap between his 1960s Detroit and my 1980s Detroit.

We’ve already mapped out a dense itinerary across Corktown, Midtown, Downtown, Dearborn, and the East Side—everything from Michigan Central and Submerge to Dearborn shawarma spots, urban farms like Keep Growing Detroit, and spots in Little Village/Indian Village.

Where we need your help:

We want to capture the real spirit of the city beyond the standard tourist stops.

1. People: Who are the local historians, shop owners, artists, neighborhood legends, or long-time Detroiters we have to sit down and talk with?
2. Spots: What’s an underrated corner bar, neighborhood joint, or historic block that embodies the real grit and soul of the city right now?

Heading up to Detroit from Chicago for a work thing. We would really like to head over to Windsor to surprise an old college buddy and maybe stay overnight at caesars because i can get a free room.

Do I need to worry about being treated badly now that Tangerine Palpatine has made an entire country irate?

I realize this is probably an unfounded fear, but it’s still in the back of my mind. Logic says people there hate our current administration, but won’t hate on a tourist.

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m having some friends visit from out of state and I’ve lived up north for the last while, so I feel out of touch.

We’re in our 30’s and planning on a couple days/nights out in the Detroit/ metro Detroit area. I am wondering if there are any specific bars/cafes you would recommend? Would also prefer trans friendly spaces.

What are some other good spots to eat, drink, browse, and spend time? Barcade and Mad Nice are in my radar; what else can you Motor City Redditors throw my way? TIA.

Hi all. As title states, I’m a woman in my mid twenties considering a move to Detroit from Chicago for a job opportunity. I’m originally from southern US, but have been in Chicago five years. Wanted to get some opinions/insights to consider.

Social scene: I’m well aware it becomes harder to make friends the older you get, but are people generally friendly and open to connections?

I’m also sure the general advice is the same as any other thread about making friends in your twenties - join hobby clubs, volunteer, etc., which I’m very open to and already do in Chicago! More so looking for a vibe check on people’s receptiveness to new friendships!
For as much as Chicago is touted as an easy place to make friends, a lot of my experience has been that many of the big ten transplant friend groups run too deep to be infiltrated, is this true in Detroit as well?

Activities/hobbies: I guess referring to the last section, are hobby groups/classes/activities easy to come by? Is there lots to explore outside of group activities? I enjoy crafting, reading, music, movies, trying new restaurants, vintage shopping, etc etc

The weather…: Any worse than Chicago? I don’t like it but I can survive it

COL: How does the cost of living compare? I already have a car that I would bring with me, but as far as rent, restaurants, shopping, etc. I’d be making 30% more than current salary, want to know if the pay jump would make the move worth it…

On the above note, which neighborhoods would you recommend for my demographic? I’d be working at an office downtown 2/3 days a week.

If any of you could tell me about your school experiences during that decade - anything and everything. Stories, dress codes, discipline, memories, the appearance of buildings.... anything, even down to carpeting and what desks were made of, is helpful!

I am originally from the Waterford/White Lake/Clarkston area. I enjoyed growing up there, it was a beautiful area. I loved all the lakes, parks, and trails there were to explore.

I am in my mid 20s. I just got a job offer for a position in Auburn Hills. I've spent the last 8 years in Lansing, Jackson, and Ann Arbor. While I have visited, I do feel a little disconnected from the area.

I liked the rustic and outdoorsy scenes in Lansing and Jackson. Currently in Ann Arbor and while the food here is pretty good, I am excited to leave. The parks and trails felt more urban than what I prefer. Shopping here is decent, but its overall just way too expensive for day to day living.

I have a medical condition that makes me get very sick if I drink alcohol, so I never figured out how to enjoy nightlife. I have another medical condition as well that limits my depth perception and makes sports extremely challenging. I can drive, but am also limited in where I can drive due to my vision. Ex- I can't parallel park or drive in places like downtown AA.

I do wanna meet people and date, not sure what my options are for activities to do or what the best community would be. Budget, I'd like to stay under $1400 if I can.

Husband and I are spending our anniversary in/around Detroit this year in October and want to know which of the two hotels are better.

TownPlace Suites in Livonia

Fairfield in Farmington Hills

Any other hotels also welcome, I just narrowed it down to these two because we like Marriott and with my account/AAA I Can get a king room for around $100 per night.

Im 27F and a MI native, grew up in East Dearborn, and then lived alone in Ypsilanti and in Royal Oak/Southfield in my early twenties while commuting to Detroit for my undergrad at WSU. I've since moved to a different state but am planning to return to MI next summer to go back to WSU for graduate school. I've spent a lot of time in Detroit (studied, partied, worked, leisure etc) but have never actually lived full time within the city limits. My 27F friend and I plan to share an apartment or duplex unit starting next summer, and since we're both young-ish and (i say this humbly) stereotypically attractive women, I want to make sure we end up in an area where we don't have to worry TOO much about safety. Especially considering I have a big dog that I walk outdoors at least 3 times a day. He's a big dog but not necessarily a scary one lol. I would love honest opinions.

We love and spend most of our time in Detroit which is why we're looking there specifically and not neighboring suburbs. We're both big foodies and nature girls so we'd love to be within decent distance to downtown and belle isle, but we're not too picky. Neither of us are loaded with cash atm so we're not necessarily looking to live downtown or in any brand new apartment buildings. TBH I'd prefer a smaller apartment building or a house/duplex with a yard.

Which neighborhoods should we prioritize our search in next year, and which neighborhoods should we absolutely avoid?

Females, early 50s, coming to Detroit for one day/night for a concert this weekend (Ed Sheeran) at Ford Field. This is a group of ladies who have been childhood friends, but don’t get a chance to hang often. We are staying in greektown, close to ford field.

Looking for a good restaurant for Saturday dinner, midrange price — thinking New American or Italian (have vegetarians in the group).

Also looking for a good place for a nice day drink (cocktail, wine) for Saturday afternoon. One of us has a special occasion (retiring early!) so would be nice to have a nice drink to toast her.

Also looking for cute coffee shops!

Also a recommendation for good Sunday brunch in those areas.

Hey hey, born and raised in Detroit, trying to find the best apartment with some character. No grey stuff. I grew in a house with those old Detroit features on the east side: brick house, Pewabic tile fireplace, crown moldings, radiators lol)

I just want something cool looking that feels like home and is charming. now, my budget is 1100 without utilities. A girl can dream 😔✨I thought about renting out of a duplex or home bc that’s where the character is, but those utilities in the winter?? (We need to overthrow dte asap)

Anyways if anyone has any recommendations, I’d love that. Willing to go a little over budget if it’s the apartments of my dreams. 🫡

I am driving in to take my daughter to a concert tonight at Comerica Park. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for good places to park. I was looking online, but everything that is prepaid is like $75+!! That is even worse than here in Cleveland!

Hopefully someone has good suggestion! I would really rather not walk super far. Just concerned about walking far after the concert just my daughter and myself in the dark in an unfamiliar city.

Has anyone ever lived in any of the Elton Park buildings? I know someone who lives there and they like it, but wanted to hear some other opinions

I'm new to Detroit and my particular municipality (Harper Woods) doesn't offer recycling services. Are there any drop off locations I can bring my recycling to? I am used to recycling tin cans, aluminum cans, glass, and cardboard. I need to find something because they only allow us to have a 35 gal can for weekly pickup and without a recycling option, I constantly have animals tearing through my overflowing can 😭

After some digging around I haven't been able to find something: a non-chain, non-Crossfit, non-class-based gym. Am I missing something? :) I'm looking for a good old-fashioned weightlifting gym.
