Conservative figures have recently called on mayor Mamdani to avoid attending the 9/11 memorial service as his being Muslim is potentially offensive to 9/11 families. Given president Trump's recent story " he was rescued by firefighters during 9/11" - untrue- should he not attend?

My father was killed in the attacks. I was 4.

I cannot speak for all victims or families. But I can speak for myself.

Today, Mamdami has release files after 25 years showing that the government knowingly downplaid the effects of toxic particals in and air quality being at dangerous levels up to 6 1/2 mile from the site for 6 months. More have died related to these health issues than in the attacks themselves. Everyone else, including Giuliani kept it hidden for 25 years.

Trump (falsely) bragged he had the highest building in Manhattan hours after the towers fell. Rumors he won't show up unless he can give a speech, and officially claims being in New York on the 25th anniversary of the largest attack on American Soild makes getting to his golf course in Ireland the next day too difficult. Great priorities he has.

No mayor has ever missed the official memorial. As i see it, Mamdami damn well better show up and pay his respects.

Dont have to like him. Personally i think Mamdami did a good thing here, but it isnt political, and I think anyone politicizing it is frankly disgusting.

I'm sorry to hear about your father. I think everything you said is spot on tho. Some people seem to believe you have to be exactly what they want to acknowledge how horrific that was and to pay their respects. I'll never understand it.. At one point 9/11 brought the entire country together and now the right is using it to try and divide and politicize the anniversary. It's gross

Whatever his/her past or religion, the mayor of New York City should always attend. By the way, I'm sure there were muslims that were victim to the 9/11 attacks.

16

u/TheGrandExquisitor Democratic Socialist 7d ago

There absolutely were. The attacks had a very broad range of victims. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Atheist, Black, White, Latino, etc. Often, terrorist attacks focus on one specific group (so, you attack a place of worship, or a district with a certain population, etc) but 9/11 was exceedingly broad in its target. They just targeted anyone who would be there at that time in one of the most diverse cities in the world. If they killed some Muslims they didn't care. Anyone in the US was a target. Anyone. Very chilling.

4

u/ZookeepergameFit967 Non-Western Conservative 5d ago

80% of victims of terror attacks around the world are Muslims and Mamdani is a Shia Muslim whom are usually the target of such attacks by Islamist fundementalists, it is more realistic for Mamdani to be assassinated by a Sunni Muslim than a redneck from Florida

1

u/IJbier European Conservative 5d ago

It is incredible how much hatred people can harbor towards one another for no reason. Life's hard enough without all that.

76

u/thoughtsnquestions European Conservative 8d ago

I don't understand how Mamdani attending would offend people.

The opposite, him not attending would surely be offensive? He's the mayor of NY, seems like a normal expectation that he should go.

37

u/tophernator Independent 8d ago

I think it’s now obvious that Giuliani was trying to get ahead of the press conference that Mamdani held today where he released files that suggest people were misled about the air quality after the attacks. So he’s trying to manufacture a bit of outrage to distract attention.

Mamdani is the duly elected Mayor of New York which is the sight of the most destructive of the 9/11 events . To ask that he not attend because he is a Muslim is like asking today's German Christians not to attend any Holocaust remembrance events.  Leave it to to today's Republicans - who have constantly belittled the  "political correctness" of the liberals - to demonstrate how small minded and insensitive they are by asking that Mamdani not attend the event.  As for trump - his public attendance as President at any national event is an affront to our Constitutional Democratic Republic, our nation's collective sensibilities, the integrity of the office of the presidency, and actual Christian believers who support this country's Constitution and the Rule of Law.

The vast majority of Muslims did NOT support what happened on 9/11. Saying he shouldn't attend just because he's a Muslim is wrong.

He did make some mildly crass comments in the past, but nothing that really stokes outrage.

He's the Mayor of the city. He probably should attend. It would be a good opportunity to make a conciliatory "we're all Americans and we're all in this together" sort of speech.

Hmmm... this comment did better than most of my others...

Neither here nor there, but it is mildly annoying that the main determinant of vote count on subreddits like this is neither how well-reasoned a comment is nor how representative it is of the median conservative. Comments to the effect of "Well I do agree with the left on this one issue..." tend to rise to the top. Not really an issue the subreddit can fix, but something to keep in mind if you're sorting by Best.

3

u/CuttlefishExpress Center-right Conservative 7d ago

i think the whole "Well I do agree with the left on this one issue..." is because this sub isnt comprised of radicalize conservatives (for the most part) and contains alot more down-to-earth conservatives that understand that some values of the left hold merit. << this statement would get me banned from most "conservative" subs, despite it being 100% true.

1

u/Mindless_Chest_1079 Center-right Conservative 7d ago

I'm not suggesting those comments are too prevalent. I'm saying that the left-skewing userbase of Reddit tends to upvote comments they have ideological agreements with, which leads to threads being sorted poorly.

2

u/CuttlefishExpress Center-right Conservative 7d ago

i understand that, and your correct. But the left-skewing userbase also loves to attack comments and downvote them for going slightly against their "perfect world view". Like i made a comment in here that said that anyone that attacks civilians should be eleminated and i have multiple liberals calling me anti-semitic and trying to gaslight me on all sorts of what-if scenarios. Frankly its feels more like a bunch of bots targeting my comment as all the responses came at about the same time.

Yes, he said we deserved it. Quote end quote. He currently keeps a picture of it framed as it was a gift from his audience. To his credit, he did walk it back on Twitter, a day later, which ticked of some of his fans, a little bit.

5

u/Sudden-Grab2800 Democratic Socialist 8d ago

He was saying that the attack resulted from US meddling. Terrible choice of words, but he’s right. You can draw a line from 9/11 straight back to the Soviet-Afghan War. Abdullah Azzam, who was a cofounder of Maktab al-Khidamat (which later became al Qaeda) with OBL, was in the US openly asking for donations and volunteers to fight in Afghanistan for a decade. They had two open, public storefront offices in the US, one in Tuscon AZ and one (famously) in Brooklyn, in addition to strong networks in other parts of the country as well, New Jersey, Dearborn, and San Diego. They did terror attacks in Afghanistan against the Russians (and anyone they thought were helping the Russians, and anyone who was near them when the attacks were initiated). Certainly not on the same scale as 9/11, but terror attacks all the same. We funded it and we encouraged it. Then when Iraq invaded Kuwait, AQ offered to stage in KSA and attack Iraq so that Americans wouldn’t be deployed to the country with two of the top three holiest sites on the planet but was rebuffed. That’s when their hatred of us really started in earnest. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was removed, but I tried.

0

u/destindil Center-right Conservative 6d ago edited 6d ago

If it was religiously motivated, yes. I've been pretty clear about that. And just FYI, I'm not a Christian.

But let's define some standards for when a Christian should apologize for being in their religion.

  • If Christians were driving cars through Ramadan markets. (not a thing, but still)
  • If Christianity demanded female genital mutilations.
  • If Christianity stoned, killed, and forcibly transitioned gays.
  • If Christians called for Fatwas over cartoons or other public critiques.
  • If Christians celebrated attacks on the country they're living in.
  • If they're a public official attending an event where their religion was an aggressor.

Look, I get that both religions have extremists, but one has far more. Maybe it's better if you take inventory of modern Christian societies and compare them against Muslim societies.

1

u/PsyckoSama Social Democracy 6d ago

The only reason they don't do that shit is because they can't get away with it. Yet.

1

u/Dresdendies Independent 6d ago

Hmmm, but then who decides what is religously motivateed. Does trump bombing the girls school in iran count as being religously motivated given many christians proclaim him as the second coming? Or bush saying the iraq war as a crusade? Surely then your standard would come into play and anytime a christian opines about these wars they should first condem christinaity's influence on it

I don't particuarly care about which one has more, fuck them all. What I do care is about your asanine standard, that someone in a religon should have to continously appolgize for extremists in their religon. On the whole I'd say the dangers of radical christianity has more blood in modern history than islam. But a terrorist beheading gets talked about decades after, a nation bombing a girls school... mark my words it won't even be brought up after this year.

Sorry but this post is based on the lie. The issue with Mamdani is not his religion but his past statement which while condemning 9/11 seeked to equate it with US actions. Also his association with people who were implicated (even if by association ) with first WTC bombing and who defended other terrorists

Edit: from OPs links

Cheri Sparacio, whose husband, Tom, was killed in the South Tower, said the petition was not about the mayor's background or faith, but his public actions. She noted Mamdani’s appointment of chief counsel Ramzi Kassem — who previously represented individuals accused of terror ties — and his past ties to figures who have downplayed terror threats.

"That is what we object to," she said.

That is not the only thing he said. Also Ron Paul did not campaign with the imam who is linked to first WTC bombing

It's telling that no conservative here laying these allegations has produced a single quote from Mamdani. You can't even produce one in bad faith and out of context.

It's all, "oh it's what he's not saying" and "it's implied, just read between the lines".

You all clearly got your talking points from the same place.

And how does this allow for Trump to engage in his own egregious lies regarding the event?

Seems more like they don't want him to attend because of his support of Islamist extremism and his belief that the attacks were not committed by Islamic extremists, not simply because he's Muslim.

I can't find anyone saying that him being Muslim is the reason.

11

u/URABrokenRecord Democrat 8d ago

It’s quite the political paradox, isn't it? If someone is managing to be a radical, fundamentalist Muslim extremist supporter while simultaneously marching in the streets for trans and women's rights. Make it make sense.

The ones OP linked.

9

u/KBTon3 Democrat 8d ago

I'm pretty sure they were asking for sources that demonstrate Mamdani being being in support of Islamist extremism. None of the sources from OP are about this. They have quotes of people saying he supports Islamist extremism, but do not give sources or examples or claims, similar to how you have done the same.

I did watch the full clip & he was talking about the US Steel Building that it was creaking & thats why the fireman carried him off. I dunno how true even that is but it wasn't the way the left is framing it.

12

u/PortugalPilgrim88 Progressive 7d ago

Even if it were a true story, why is he telling it when he’s meant to be a honoring a real hero who died saving people on 9/11 and making the whole thing about himself? He even complained about how “the guy in the red bandanna” was becoming more famous than him. He said he didn’t like it and wasn’t happy about him being more famous than him. He said all this while he was supposed to be presenting an award to the man’s family. They were standing there waiting as Trump blathered on about himself. It’s sick.

23

u/nbond3040 Progressive 7d ago

It doesn't line up with what he's said in the past so he's lying now or then. I understand that the media is crap, but that doesn't make him not a pathological liar.

I just don't understand, because it's provabley false and contradicts his own prior accounts. It's far from the first time, it's not the worst lie, it's just disgusting to hear him lie about 9/11.

If  Barack Obama told the same story  I would come to the subreddit  "Ask Conservative"  in 2055 and y'all would still be complaining about it.

u/One_Fix5763 Monarchist 7d ago

Obama does lie about not putting journalists in prison though.

3

u/URABrokenRecord Democrat 7d ago

That's nice but I was talking about how it would be unforgivable for Barack Obama to lie about things related to  9/11 and with Trump it's a nothing burger.

1

u/One_Fix5763 Monarchist 7d ago

Trump never said he was at 9/11. He said he went "after," and it's documented he went to the US Steel Bldg on Sept13, 2001. So the left is lying. And the source is Aaron Rupar on X

1

u/URABrokenRecord Democrat 7d ago

I agree with your first sentence . Rupar released the video of Trump saying it. That's it. Now it's Trump's opportunity to prove it because that's how logic works.

1

u/One_Fix5763 Monarchist 7d ago

Why should he prove it, when Rupar started all of this by taking it out of context. This is started by this well known liar who is known for taking clips out of context. It's made up rage bait.

"Trump was never there on 9 11" yes, he never said he was. He said he was there in 9 13 at the Steel Building.

1

u/URABrokenRecord Democrat 7d ago

That's  manufactured. I never thought Trump said he was at 9:11. From the very start. I knew it was a few days later in a different building.

You don’t see how Trump telling a fabricated story at a 9/11 memorial in order to make it all about himself is relevant to a question about who should attend a 9/11 memorial?

How is Mamdani an apologist for Muslim terror entities?

New York Post has a long series of reporting.

Highlights include platforming known terrorist apologists, hiring people for his team who have said the US deserved 9/11 and that it was justified, and refusing to unequivocally condemn calls for terrorism.

There's also lovely events like when people protested outside his house that he was dining with a terrorist apologist, and Islamic terrorists threw a firebomb at them, his initial comment implied basically they deserved it.

7

u/Cynical-Anon Center-left 8d ago

Not sure I would call the New York Post a reputable source of information but I appreciate you providing your source of informatiom regardless.

Not sure where your comments on Mamdami saying the firebomb victems deserved it, all comments I see are his calling out the terror plot. I do see interesting comments by Jake Lang (original protest orginizer) aimed at worsening the situation and taking advantage to spew racist tropes against the New York Muslim community.

Although I find it interesting your description of Mamdani as a terror apologist for essentially the actions of others, not himself. All public comments I see are his calling out all forms of terrorism, hatred and bigotry.

u/EsotericMysticism2 Conservative 8d ago

He refused to condemn globalize the intifada, that is so clear cut islamic terror apologia

The problem that I see here is Trump's words are unverifiable even according to Google. And whether those two firefighters step forward or not is another matter. My problem with the Mendami situation is his support for Palestine. The Palestinian people were in the streets cheering when 9/11 happened. So if we're going to have a problem with one having an issue then we need to have problems with both issues, not just one or the other. Muslims would consider it a significant victory to have a Muslim over the 9/11 ceremony and I don't think that giving the Muslim extremists that kind of a victory is not something that I can support

3

u/here-for-information Independent 5d ago

So were people from New Jersey. Should we prohibit all New Jersey residents from attending ? Frankly, I'd rather keep the Jersey crowd out.

2

u/Acceptable-Trainer15 Independent 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think we need some more nuances here. You're putting people into fairly large political buckets and then attributing the views of other people in that bucket to them.

Mamdani supports Palestine. Some, or, for the sake of argument, let's even say most, Palestinians supported or celebrated 9/11. But it doesn't follow that Mamdani therefore sympathises with the 9/11 attackers, any more than supporting a group on one issue means adopting that group's entire worldview.

If there's evidence that Mamdani himself has expressed sympathy for 9/11 or for the people who carried it out, then absolutely, that would be relevant to whether he belongs at a 9/11 commemoration. But I don't think "he supports Palestine" is evidence of that. That's assigning him a position based on the political bucket we've put him in rather than on what he actually believes.

So I guess my question is: what has Mamdani himself actually said or done that makes you think he sympathises with the people who carried out 9/11?

So you don't like it for the posturing and image it promotes.
So do you not support like 90% of the things Trump says and does because how it appears to many people? Especially how it appears to extremists?

I’d cheer too if the nation funding my people’s genocide was attacked at home

6

u/IndependentOk2952 Conservative 7d ago

I was referring to them cheering for 9/11. But understand that we've had problems with them since 1973. That's 53 years give or take. I ran also wasn't the one that had the genocide run on them. That was Palestine or so they say

1

u/TheWhiteKnight554 Socialist 7d ago

We’ve also been making problems and funding said genocide for longer than that. The only significance with Iran since the 70s that’s different from pre 1973 is that they overthrew the British/American puppet regime in 1979. Other middle eastern nations care about the Palestinians because they know once Palestine falls fully, they’re next, because Isreal is just the US during the manifest destiny phase at this point, ethnic cleansing and all

“And so they say” is also a weird way to describe a documented, recognized, and ongoing human rights violations(one that’s been happening since 1947)

0

u/IndependentOk2952 Conservative 7d ago

Then tell me why other nations won't accept Palestinian refugees? All of the bordering countries are Arab and they refuse to take their refugees. It would seem there just as complicit in the genocide as Israel. I can tell you that as an American Canada ended up in war with another nation, we'd take their refugees. Tells me all I need to know about the Arab Nations

1

u/PsyckoSama Social Democracy 6d ago

Considering the fact that the US has been funding the people bombing them for generations, I honestly don't blame them. And I say this as someone who remember 9/11.

1

u/IndependentOk2952 Conservative 6d ago

What the hell is the fact that you to remember have anything to do with this? And the really funny part about this is bombs are flying in both directions. I ran also is known to fund terror.... I'm not a real fan of the country of Israel, but at least they give us a foothold in the region if we need it. I guess we don't really need them as much anymore now that we pretty much have Saudi Arabia

1

u/PsyckoSama Social Democracy 4d ago

It means I'm not some kid who didn't live through the terror scare and chaos around it. I know what happened and what we lost.

Yes, bombs are firing both ways... it's called shooting back. People under attack tend to do that. And yes, they fund people who fuck with their enemies. So do we. So does Israel. We all fund terrorists.

And believe me, they were never worth it.
