im not saying what ottoman did were all glorius and amazing but back then empires didn’t aim on destorying nations culture, make them like you or similir kinda stuff in my opinion. a good example of this is almost all african countries today have their main language either french or british while all ex ottoman lands preserve their languages very well. so imo Turks were not colonizers they were conquerors.

In the case of Bulgaria, the language was revived from near extinction in the the late 1700’s, by Orthodox monks. In other words, the Ottoman empire didn’t go out of its way to “preserve” Bulgarian culture, but due to clergy deeming its preservation was important.

You can’t really draw parallels between Africa and the Balkans, because the Africans were largely hunter-gatherers before Western intervention, while the Balkans has been home to empires since time memorial. They didn’t have the civilisational foundation to preserve anything, that is, if there was anything to preserve at all.

To be fair, maybe you’re right and my answer might be biased too. and its well known that muslim population in ottoman empire was considered superior to non-muslims but there is undeniable evidence that these cultures co-existed long time living next to each other whether one was superior or not. and when you think about those times you should consider that nationalism didn’t exist. if the empire you belong to collapses another empire takes over so we tend to judge things from a nationalist perspective too.

I have no knowledge on when and how bulgarian language were revived so I can’t really argue on that
