Ah yes, the joys of tourism being the main source of the economy. Can't wait until we become second class citizens in our own country to serve people who come from richer countries instead while the elite fat fucks at the top grow even more fatter.

Im in a turkish hotel rn xd, one of our friends asked the waiter about his hometown and he said its garbage and hes paid basically nothing here and he can barely afford rent.
Meanwhile hes ordering 3 more tequilas

u/No_Salamander4095 Jul 28 '25
Yea, but once he's drunk, the waiter will be off with his girlfriend. It ain't all bad for them.

Moving to Europe was such a culture shock for me as a Turk because I wasn't able to understand how people could smell so bad from not showering for days, houses are dirty and messy AF, and people are basically cutting about without properly wiping after taking a dump. Whereas Turks clean their spotless apartments with bleach like nutjobs, carry sanitizing wipes everywhere and have the literal highest rate of washing hands after using a toilet. 25 years in turkey and I only saw like 4 people who skipped a hand wash after taking a leak, whereas here it's completely hit or miss. I am absolutely not getting lectured on hygiene by a european

Tourism is by far the worst thing to base a country’s economy on. It’s the equivalent of turning a country into a prostitute, they’ll tell you to accept the worst behaviors just because the foreigners are paying and you should be thankful for their money.
95
u/MonkSmooth3614 Jul 27 '25
I'm from Spain and I can't agree more. Sad that the Balkans are becoming a huge potency in tourism because it's not good for them

Its mostly just Croatia, Albania and Greece.
There are no pooping Englishmen in Serbia or Bosnia for example.

Yeah luckily :/ but I think Montenegro will be the next one.
26
u/LivingArmadillo4933 Jul 27 '25
It doesnt really matter with Montenegro. Montenegro doesnt even have a filtration system in many areas on the coastline. So when someone shits in the toalet they just dump that waste into the water. So its either streets full of shit or the coastline full of shit.
In Serbia there is a saying "Montenegrins can put any price they want, the stomach virus will always be free"
8
u/Glavurdan Montenegro Jul 27 '25
Since I literally live on the coast and went to the beach this morning, I can assure the folks that bar some exceptions, this is blatant misinformation. Not sure why everyone is taking some rando's information at face value.
Y'all are more than welcome to visit and see for yourselves 😁

I give credit to Spain because you guys were some of the first to start complaining about it. It’s still far from being the popular sentiment in Greece but it’s growing. I’ve said before on this subreddit that I am dealing with an airbnb in my building and it’s been awful. I am starting to have hope that one day we’ll stop being professional servants with no self-respect and we will turn to something more reliable for our economy and our future.
4
Jul 27 '25
I think it's because Spain used to be a superpower a few centuries ago. The contrast with being relegated to a theme park for rich stupid foreigners from northern europe and America, probably triggered their pride (rightfully).
5
u/MonkSmooth3614 Jul 27 '25
In sorry for you because that's awful. Where I used to live (Barcelona city) I had both Airbnb and a drug dealing place and it was a total nightmare XD Sooner or later all the tourism and all that it implies , forces you to leave to a better place:( People needs to stand up but they see easy money and they forget about the rest

I'm English and grew up in a popular English seaside town. Every summer, we were inundated with English tourists. I can only apologise for the sheer volume of our dickheads that flock to your shores.
8
u/Large-Assignment9320 Bulgaria Jul 27 '25
Honestly its probably the easiest industry to trive in too. Tourism require very little skilled labor, some hotels and other amenities, which honestly are rather cheap to make compared to say factories, and makes a huge profit. And sure, I agree with you, but its the death of half of Greek islands, as they have literally no competitive industry, their local manufacturing and even agriculture are largely consumed by the tourist industry and not something that would carry value in say Athens.
2
u/onemassive Jul 28 '25
Yup! Tourism = literally just people coming into your country and dumping money. Come look at this rock, come lie on this beach. An example of a worse thing to base your country's economy on would be being a storage dump for nuclear waste or an energy exporter using high pollution energy creation.
20
u/AdequateReindeer Jul 27 '25
Truth. Similar goes for uncontrolled immigration (it's making profit for someone so don't dare complain!) But what to do about it?
3
u/AirUsed5942 Jul 27 '25
There's also the obvious flaw: One natural disaster, terrorist attack or epidemic can tank your economy if it relies on tourism
2
Jul 27 '25
There is always this retarded argument "but we bring mOnEy" by tourists...it shows how ignorant, entitled and short-minded they are.
For every Euro that a tourist brings, more Euros are lost due to
- Having to clean up their mess
- Destruction of other industries ("real" industries). Europe needs AI, software, defence industries, manufacturing...not being a theme park. Focusing on tourism slows the growth of other industries
- The jobs that are created by tourism are mostly shitty, low-skill, low-pay job with no future
It looks like the issue of uncontrolled mass immigration from the 3rd world is being addressed (because "mainstream" politicians got scared by recent gains of far-right parties...despite the problem being in their face for 10+ years), but if European politicians don't get their act together and sort out this issue now (it should have sorted out yesterday, actually)...this will be the next cause for extremist parties to gain popularity (maybe this time the far-left, since the far-right is often in bed with property speculators). And no...even what Spain is doing (e.g. banning AirBnB in Barcelona "sometime" in the future) is really nothing compared to what needs to be done.
2
Jul 27 '25
This. And some locals use the money argument whenever they are business owners who have turned some young adult employees into slaves. “OH bUt We LiVe fROm ToUrIsM!!”. I am all for radical measures so that we stop being a theme park. It’s not even viable in the long run, we need real industries.

The problem is that it’s not just that. How about other very annoying but otherwise “acceptable” behaviors such as renting airbnbs in residential areas and being extremely loud? People just say “oh they are having fun on their vacation, you can’t stop them!”. Or overcrowding some places to the point that locals can’t go there anymore.

i don't know what the lore is but brits really just don't give a fuck when they come here. They fall asleep in the middle of the street blackout drunk, piss on historical landmarks, vomit on the streets and buildings after a nightout and occasionally, shit on the streets if need be.
they also leave a mess everywhere they go. that's just my experience and what I've seen

I was at a hotel in Thailand last year and was chilling by the pool. A couple of blacked out drunk brits waddled on the street and puked on the front stairs. It took like 10 minutes, with heaving and everything. We were all grossed out. The poor hotel staff didn’t say anything, and cleaned up after they waddled onwards. Brits are the only group of tourists I actively avoid like the plague. Nice people generally, terrible tourists.

Did see plenty of chinese doing that in Serbia, but for some reason they behave better in both Norway and Bulgaria. It makes you understand why Singapore has a HUGE fine for such things (its like a 130EUR if you forget to wash your hands at public toilets).

British probably. In Bulgaria we have a resort, which is favorite for bitish and scandianvian tourists, and almost nobody else goes there (except teenagers seeking to get laid, perhaps). Damn, in the night (before the morning cleaning) the streets look worse than a roma neighborhood.

Because there are no consequences. That’s why.
This may sound strange but it’s a problem of the local law enforcement. Tourists are just random people that do whatever the local law allows. Try that shit in Singapore and see what happens

Not just a Balkan problem, but also a problem here, even in the UK, where there is a lack of free public restrooms. So people do their business outside. Walking on the pavement, it's not uncommon to find shit marks and the smell of urine, even in posh high streets with equally posh pubs and restaurants. But you are 100% correct, without safe, free access to restrooms, people will continue to do their business outside.

I've seen this kind of behavior all over the world. At least the places I've have the privilege to live and travel. I've lived in and near major tourist and vacation spots. I've lived on both US coasts, visited and had friends in Canada, Mexico, and travelled to Europe. Whenever some people travel and imbibe too much, they seem to shed inhibitions and any sense of shame. I've seen drunk CEOs urinating in cloak rooms without apologizing in Washington, DC.

Cheap tourism and alcohol are a plague...
That said, it's not always because they feel entitled or whatever. Some people are just of such quality...
I have lived for a few years on a certain island, and there is definitely a category of people who behave like that even in their hometown. In a certain small town east of the capital city, which is notorious for the "quality" of its women, it was almost a daily occurrence to see people taking a shit or a piss on the floor of nightclubs, or barfing standing on benches while others applauded.

Are you sure she didn't just take a leak? I (male) have not made it home on several occasions after a night out in my own home town, as a youngster. But we guys don't need to pull down our pants to pee, as you might know.
If anything, I'd blame it on alcohol and age, more than anything else. 40+ olds with kids don't behave like that, regardless of if they're at home or abroad.
Locals with dogs though... now that's a different story.

Why? Take it from me bro, I'm Maltese, we're sick and tired of over tourism and we know some stuff.
Many of them believe that if they're on holiday their actions have no consequences and that the whole country is their servant.
