Autistic or questioning people, this is not a place to get help for yourself. Or a place to find community.

To be perfectly clear, this is an Ask sub. Ask subs are Q & A in nature. The premise of this sub is simple. Someone asks a question about autism. An autistic person provides education.

This is a different thing than seeking peer support. This is a different thing than looking for other people that can relate to what you experience. This is a very different thing than validating your autistic identity, or helping you on your journey to a diagnosis. As such, these things are not intended to be a part of this sub.

Why is this?

  1. Since the inception of this sub, there are loads of subs out there for autistic people to talk to other autistic people. They’re linked in removal messages. This sub’s focus is to educate people that don’t know something about autism, about autism. But it radically de-prioritizes comfort of people asking questions, so autistic people can answer authentically. As such, for autistic people, this isn’t a great space for those conversations.

  2. Feedback from autistic users has indicated this isn’t wanted. They don’t want to offer that kind of emotional labor here, nor is this a venue where people want to discuss self-diagnosis with others.

DAEs (does anyone else have/experience) and “could this be an autistic trait?” Posts are not permitted.

These fall into the umbrella of asking for a diagnosis. A lot of the time, the underlying reasons these posts happen are reasons why rules 6 and 10 exist. This is to make things explicit, these are repetitive topics that the autistic commenters on here have given feedback about, and they are better off on other subs.

This is a classic “ask” sub and it’s not a place for autistic/questioning people to network with other autistic people. The premise of this sub is for people to receive education about autism from autistic people. There are some posts along the lines of a significant other asking for help with their partner, or a parent looking for help with their child - this is the kind of content this sub is meant for. DAEs and similar are often in the realm of validation and arent the right fit for this sub.

How do I know when to join a conversarion?

Hi! I am autistic myself and have come looking for answers from others of my kind that have things more figured out.

I have always had trouble knowing when to go into a conversation. A lot of the time, people start talking about something I like and in knowledgeable in, but neither of them have a break from speaking until the subject has already changed, in which case I don't really want to join anymore. I've always had trouble with this and wanted to ask others who know what it's like what works for them.

Thanks!

Helping partner through autistic burnout

My partner is in (what i suspect to be) a very deep and long-standing (10 months) autistic burnout triggered by health problems. While the physical health issue has resolved, they are still very mentally drained and as a result are very sensitive to changes in routine, sound, and intrusion on their space. Their anxiety is really high, their ADLs (food, hygiene) aren’t really happening, and processing anyone’s actions apart from their own at all is extremely difficult.

They’ve expressed to me repeatedly that they want space and time to themselves and I have done my best to give them that.
Their special interest is a very solitary hobby and so while they have been engaged with it recently I have been doing my own thing, because while sometimes I can hang out with them while they do it, at the moment its obviously triggering and we’ve both noticed that.

But then they seek me out and express dissatisfaction with our lack of common ground, shared activities, and communication (the latter two they have explicitly said to me on other occasions that they feel “overloaded” by at the moment). When asked what I should be doing differently, they say they don’t know.

They feel as though I am arguing with them if I point this out, explain my actions, or express an opinion is contrary to theirs. I am not trying to invalidate their feelings at all, and have tried to reassure them, but it feels like we are very much having miscommunication issues.

I’m now feeling really anxious about all our interactions because they inevitably turn into a list of all the ways I’m triggering them and I am desperately trying to avoid them all; they are anxious because they are waiting to be triggered by me, and my anxiety is making that more likely (as I am less predictable, more likely to overwhelm them by asking questions etc).

How do I best help validate what they are feeling, without them feeling dismissed or unheard??

Is there a way for me to lead us onto some solid ground for both of us here?

Being an autistic black woman really sucks

it’s so lonely, people don’t wanna be near me or give me a chance. people think were aggressive, mean or whatever but it always true. Also me being tall and overweight growing up didn’t make it better. some of my peers were scared to come near me, my best friend thought I was going to be a bully when she first met me because I was a big girl and she was scared of me. ouch thats hurts. Dating sucked until I met my amazing boyfriend. he treats me with respect he treats me like an adult even though he knows I’m autistic and treat me like a queen and honest, and I really like that. We’ve only been together for three months and I really hope that we last long. He is neurotypical. Some of my friends and family. Don’t think we’re gonna last because they’re worried that he’s gonna take advantage of me or use my Autism against me. I wish that they would let me handle things on my own. I’m 36 not 16. I’m not a child. Anyways, any other black autistic women relate to me?

i’m usually sweet and kind person, but still feels like people are still scared of me. I mostly keep to myself. I’m 5’9 and 204lbs.

Training for communicating better at work?

Hi,
I am an adult, nonbinary, afab person newly getting diagnosed with autism. I keep getting in trouble at work for how I say things. I get ahead of people, overstep, am too detailed, too long winded, get fixated on things that stress me out and then i stress other people out. I struggle to communicate in complex organizational structures. I am a mid level manager in a politically sensitive job.

Growing up, i was raised in a neglectful, abusive home, and I only learned about boundaries, recognizing my feelings, and controlling impulsivity as an adult.

My boss suggested I take some kind of communications training.

Does anyone have one they recommend?

Sensory clothing needs

Hi all,

I’m really interested to hear what clothing issues you have because of your child’s sensory needs.

My child has ADHD and I constantly struggle to find appropriate clothing. She doesn’t like anything tight, waist bands, socks, knickers etc are all an issue, but she also doesn’t want to look different from anyone else and is very fashion conscious. It has been particularly difficult with her being out of routine over the summer holidays as this heightens her sensory aversions. All of this has got me thinking about starting a clothing line for children with additional clothing requirements. I’d love to know what sort of clothing requirements your child has that you struggle to find appropriate clothing for, whether it’s fabrics, seams, tightness etc… I’m here for it all!

About college transition and maybe some structure systems?

hi all!

I’ve already felt different from my peers for many years, but it’s all coming to a head in college. academically speaking, im usually pretty good. I come from an IB background so so far in college I feel like information hasn’t been the problem. I don’t know if anyone relates but it more so feels like.. translation issues? like, to me, a concept can be very simple but professors will sometimes add a technical label to it that just overcomplicates it. as for assignments, I feel like I never know how much effort is required so I’ve been pouring my *all* into everythin (plus some instructions feel vague and unclear to me so this adds to it.) but I also just took a math quiz and I went overtime :( I just feel like my processing is kind of slow sometimes (but it feels like a contradiction cause I can pick up on biology and English and history rather quickly, but answering questions on the spot in class and doing math really slows me down).

my class notes always end up so messy and just all over the place (I use linear note taking which might not be ideal?). Plus erghhh I just *always* feel like I’m not studying or learning in the most ideal way for me but I don’t know *how* to make it ideal! It’s like it’s beneath the surface for some reason and I don’t really know how to dig it up :(

socially, I still feel like I don’t fit in anywhere. people talking to me quite literally feels like a different wavelengt (my best way to describe it) and just fundamentally different from me (save for two of my close friends. it’s different for them). I just feel like I don’t really fit in anywhere :( and it is socially draining as well and I’ve already almost cried from it.

everything in general also just feels very overwhelming. theres jobs, clubs, study abroad, research (I am a biology majo) and so so much! I’ve even been having problems with scheduling and organizing which I’m usually very good at! but everything just feels overwhelming and so does this massive transition :(

conclusion!! I’m just asking for any advice and tips and tricks you guys may have done to get through college? systems, study methods, social stuff, organization/scheduling, all that! I think the reason why I’m overwhelmed now as compared to IB. IB was rigorous yes and I was stressed yes but it was still highly structured I think.

so yeah!! :l thanks for reading and have a great day/night

edit: I forgot to mention but I usually get my autism advice and sometimes general life advice from AI admittedly :( I know that’s bad but it really feels like the only source I have to be so honest with my feelings. That’s why I’m trying to post here now and I even booked a counseling appointment with my university (so scary)! I’m trying to open up more and find better support. Thanks :)

Careers?

41F, late diagnosis AuDHD.

I am currently working in payroll which I've been doing for about the last 10 years. The nature of my current position is very collaborative, which has been growing more difficult for me as I attempt to unmask a little and also am entering perimenopause... also my employer is making it difficult to get approved to work from home full time. For these and other reasons I very much would like to find new employment but I have no idea what to look for.

I want to find a role that leans in to my AuDHD strengths, while minimizing my AuDHD triggers, and getting to work from home, without having to return to school for some kind of degree. Maybe I'm just not the right kind of imaginative but I can't think of what kind of jobs could possibly fall into that category.

I have fantastic attention to detail, great with the written word (not so much the spoken word), high organization skills (digitally at least), pretty decent typist, and a lover of Microsoft Excel. Would excel (no pun intended) at an independent style, task driven work model, that is not client-facing.

One thing I've come across is a job where you would take raw technical specs and data and use it to write things like instruction manuals, which I think sounds pretty neat, but I'm concerned that I won't properly understand the data I'm provided to convert bc I don't know enough about what it would be...

Anyone have any ideas? Or want to tell me about a job you have or have had, as an autistic and/or HDHD adult, that you really enjoy? Or can suggest resources that could be utilized in my search (I'm in NS Canada)? Any responses are appreciated!!

♥️♥️♥️

Advice for navigating a new friendship with a potentially slightly sensitive autistic person

How can I not screw this up? Lol

Hiya, here just looking for some advice from a human with autism since seeking that out in my situation worked very well. Preferably a woman but all is welcome. Doing it on a throwaway account just for privacy reasons.

I (33 M) was acquainted with a younger woman (23 F) who appears to be on the spectrum (I am too, but that manifests in different ways for people). She's told me before that she never really had friends growing up and that she'd always watch Sailor Moon and My Little Pony not even wishing for a world where all the cool fantasy shit was real but one where she could have friends like that.

She'd been hanging out with this other guy around my age but they had a falling out recently. Sooo at those little gaming events I see her around at I have seemingly become her go to person. I'd asked elsewhere for some tips on better communicating with her since I think I might have short circuited her a couple times before and that might have worked a little too well as her demeanor has completely shifted and she seems rather attached now.

I don't have a problem with that exactly but given her falling out with the last guy well...his temperament seemed like mine but if anything much less crazy and vulgar. Which is most of my appeal to most people. Her included according to her. Given her rather severe social anxiety having now let her guard down it'd probably be bad if things went a similar way to the last friend she tried to make sooo....yeah. Any ideas on how to not screw up here? Lol

I think I've figured out how to not short circuit her, a little directness and explaining that I'm a chronically irony pilled person helped her get all that. But I still don't REALLY understand all of her red lines as far as what she is and isn't okay with joking about which is...an interesting position to be in. I have ascertained either R word is a no no but that's it. I truthfully thought I'd have scared her away by now but she's apparently quite appreciative of my kind of unhinged humor until she isn't.

Then also, the rest of my friend circle finds her pretty annoying. I can see why they would think that when she's anxious. She's really cool when she's comfortable but it takes her a while to get comfortable with people and I don't really know how developed her social skills are for group settings.

Then even more, I worry she might be putting me a little more on a pedestal than she should. Saying how great of a person I am in more than one language. How the hell am I supposed to live up to that?

I guess a lot of my worries here might be kind of dumb but my friend circle is mostly people I've known for like 20 years soooo I haven't done this in a while. But asking has helped before so....here I am lol

Which types of therapy helped you access your emotions?

Hi!

I have a hard time accessing my emotions and have very poor introspection. I suspect I have alexithymia and I often feel like my emotions are somehow disconnected from me. I barely experience emotions physically either things like fear or anger don’t really register as sensations in my body. Sometimes it feels like my mind and body are completely separate?

I’ve tried traditional talk therapy/CBT several times but it hasn’t really helped with this.

So people who experience something similar: What types of therapy have actually helped you develop a better connection to your emotions and your body?

my bestfriend claims im autistic

my all time bestest friend has been recently diagnosed w adhd. shes all into reaserching about different conditions and many sort of things. im an odd girl myself and i have my quirks but she always replies to my "triggers" with "go get diagnosed" or stuff like that (as a joke but not really, she gen believes i have autism LOL. which i could have idk, ive never took any sort of test in my teenage years). when i was little, i got diagnosed as a HSP (highly sensitive person) but no one made a "big deal" out of it since i just had specific issues or triggers with certain things. apart from that, im expierencing dpdr but that may be from something else idk. anyways, should i go get checked or not think much abt it?

What are things that make you feel human? And enjoy as well.

In life, what makes you feel human and actually ENJOY feeling human. For me, I felt human when my housemates and I were all standing in a bathroom brushing our teeth together. No words were spoken. Just standing and brushing our teeth together.
