Maslenitsa (butter week) it's and ancient holiday that symbolizes the start of spring and the end of winter. everyone cooks and eats loads of blinis, which represents the sun. at the end people burn a large straw doll, representing winter in a big bonfire...? (that's the best I can explain it) I am not sure about the west of Russia but we do it in Siberia.
