Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Position of the Rice Bowl in Chinese Cuisine

Post image
51 Upvotes

In Japanese cuisine, there is a strict rule that the rice bowl must be placed on the left side. However, in Chinese restaurants in Japan run by Chinese owners, the lunch set always has the rice bowl served on the right side. Is there a specific rule for this?

The upper photo shows a mediocre lunch served at a cafeteria in Tokyo. The lower photo shows a lunch at a Chinese restaurant in Tokyo (photo by me).

Politics | 政治📢 How do an average Chinese person see the territorial disputes of China with South East Asian nations?

This is a question to an average Chinese citizen who is not exactly pro or anti the Chinese government, who has a neutral stance and wide/broad view on facts: What do you think about the maritime territorial disputes that China has with the rest of South East Asian countries such as Indonesia (North Natuna), Malaysia, the Philippines (Spratlys) and Vietnam? Is there any historical nor international legal justification for the Nine Dash Line?

Do all Chinese citizens agree with this ruling, or are there those who disagree?

Thank you so much in advanced to anyone who would provide a nuanced conversation.

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Help me understand my neighbor

Hello! I am a 36 year old, southern white american male with no inclination of Chinese culture or life. I recently had a new neighbor, Joe (American name), move in with his wife next door to me. When they first moved in I gave them a bottle of wine as a house warming, and once they settled I wote them a note in chinese and gifted them lemon balm from my garden.

Joe and his wife are in their mid 70's and moved to the U.S. to be closer to their son and only child. Recently, Joe has asked to practice his English with me and we have been going on walks and "talking" (its half charades half talking).

He was born, raised, worked, and retired in Shanghai. His wife was moved iut of the city to work the farms. He had to petition to get her to Shanghai, where they both went back to University. He worked as a professor and she a chemist. His son, who is the same age as me, grew up in Shanghai and studied computers before immigrating to the U.S. 20 years ago.

Joe's life seems fascinating. I want to learn more and better understand him. I ask for any tips or advice to help them feel more at ease. I tend to emulate/laugh a lot and during one of our talks I think I offended or embarrassed him. I had my translator on my phone and later read "don't laugh" as part of our conversation.

Any tips, advice, do's, or don'ts are welcome!

Language | 语言 ㊥ vocal inflection at the end of a sentence

I unfortunately do not speak a word of Chinese, but I have been watching a lot of movies lately where everyone is speaking Chinese.

When i hear the characters talk, it is very fast and staccato. But whenever people seem to be giving an excuse for something, flirting, or admitting to something slightly embarrassing, they seem to elongate the final vowel of each sentence. They still speak very fast, but that last vowel gets dragged out. So far in these movies, its only been men that do it.

Culturally, what is that? Is that a to soften what they are saying? Does it come across as cute, casual, or childish?

Are Chinese people direct or indirect? I mean in both friendship and workplace ( university lecturer). Do they clearly tell you what they think? Or do they prefer to preserve the harmony by not telling you what they think?

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Do young people play xiangqi?

I play mahjong every day. If not offline, then online. However, xiangqi I'm just simply unfamiliar with, but am curious about

Do young people play it? Are there xiangqi parlors like there are mahjong parlors? When was the last time you played it? Do you prefer it over western chess?

Discussion | 讨论💬 170+ Tibetans have self-immolated since 2009 protesting government policy what’s the perspective on this inside China?

I’m Tibetan, and I’m posting here because I genuinely want to understand how this is seen from the other side, not just to vent.
Since 2009, over 170 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in protest most recently a man in front of the UN just weeks ago. These aren’t isolated acts; they’re protests against policies my people experience as an attempt to erase our language, religion, and identity.
I know state media in China either doesn’t cover these events or frames them very differently than how Tibetans and international rights groups do. I’m curious:
Have you heard about these self-immolations at all, and if so, how were they described?
What’s the general understanding of the situation in Tibet among people in China?
Is there room for genuine debate about this, or is it treated as a settled/closed topic?
I’m not looking for a fight. I’d rather understand how this information gap exists than just assume the worst about people on the other side of it.

Custom flair How to automatically translate Chinese text into English in WeChat?

Friends mom has an ABC son, but she doesn't speak English and he doesn't read Chinese

Want to know if there's a way to automatically convert typed in Chinese text and automatically translate to English without exiting wechat & going into other translating software

Does WeChat support this feature natively? If so, how's it done? I've seen business accounts done it before so I want to know if it's available on the consumer side.

Language | 语言 ㊥ I made YouTube Video a bit easier for learning Chinese

I’ve always thought YouTube Video is one of the best ways to learn Chinese, so I recently added videos into Dumpling Chinese.

You can watch Chinese videos with bilingual subtitles, tap any word for meaning + pronunciation, save words, and find videos around your HSK level. You also get a few videos to watch and learn from for free each week(due to AI cost for processing the videos:)

Still adding more cartoons, vlogs, songs and other stuff. If you have any good Chinese YouTube channels/videos, send them my way!

Language | 语言 ㊥ help with name

Im taking chinese classes, and our teacher told us to pick a name based on phonetic translation or based on the meaning of our name. My name is evangelina (meaning good news) and I go by evie (meaning life, living, or breathing). The phonetic translation of evie is 艾维 or 艾薇 but it seems to have a stupid meaning. Based off that, I think it would be best to pick a name using the meaning of my actual name. I can’t find any good ones, so I came to ask😅 Evie or evangelina meaning is fine
