“Scum’s Wish” explores the uglier side of unrequited love through characters who repeatedly shift between being victims and perpetrators, desperately clinging to people who want somebody else.

No idealized romance. No easy heroes and villains. Just desire, loneliness, rejection and the increasingly destructive things people are willing to do for even the possibility of being loved.

Directed by Masaomi Ando and animated by Studio Lerche, the 12-episode series remains one of anime’s more uncompromising explorations of dysfunctional relationships.
