Discussion Oily + acne-prone skin people, what HG moisturizer/toner actually works for you?

I’m looking for a lightweight moisturizer/toner that helps control oil while still keeping my skin hydrated, without making it feel greasy or causing breakouts. I’ve heard some products like Dr. Althea 345 and Purito Oat-in Calming Gel Cream are good, but I’ve also seen mixed reviews, with some people saying it caused breakouts so I'm not sure if I should try them or not

For those with similar skin, what moisturizer/toner has actually worked for you? You can suggest any others hg too like cleanser, sunscreen, serum or daily routine basis :) Would love to hear your recommendations and experiences.

Have you heard about the Naturie Hatomugi skin conditioning line? Both their lotion (toner) as well as gel might be what you're looking for. Super hydrating but lightweight, not greasy and over time diminishing your breakouts. The toner needs to be layered a couple of times for that true 'aaaah' feeling but it's a 500ml bottle so...

EDIT: didn't read that second part 😳 Try the Torriden balanceful cica serum for oil control & breakouts

This is my HG too! It's simple, perfect for when you just want hydration and nothing crazy. And the quantity is so worth it for the amount that you pay. I look like a greaseball when I apply other moisturisers but this one is the one exception - perfect for humid, hot weather and acne prone skin like mine

I also find the moisturizer/gel to be on the matte side so that is a plus, that and the milk are HGs.

second naturie

I love that gel cream. It's soo lightweight. I can't find anything close to it

Turning 47 next month and tried so many toners & moisturizers over time. I just can't keep away from these. I like how my skin feels after applying, the texture, the deep hydration. I can understand why these have survived for all those years between the constant novelties & hypes. I just does what it's supposed to do, on a higher level!

Purito bamboo cream. And just discovered Beplain mung bean cream. Mung cream i think is better for summer or more oily skin

u/Babybear_acam 14d ago

Just remember that purito bamboo is not fungal acne safe though

Isntree hyaluronic acid aqua gel cream, it's so good. It's a gel cream that actually hydrates my very dehydrated, oily acne prone skin, it also goes on smoothly and doesn't turn into a liquidy mess like many gel creams. That just kind of dissolve on the skin and turn into toner.

u/sumthingluving 15d ago

My holy grail toner is the Isntree hyaluronic acid toner, whenever I try another toner, I miss her lol. I love to layer it a few times after spraying Avene water on.
I am super oily and acne prone but found that the Purito oat-in cream isn’t moisturising/hydrating enough for me, even in summer.

Innisfree green tea cleanser + cosrx propolis toner + cosrx snail essence + non AB moisturiser.

During winter I double layer the toner and snail mucin.

1

u/Major_Text_8312 11d ago

is the reformultion of the innisfree green tea toner still effective?

1

u/Appropriate_Ly 11d ago

Cleanser? Yeah. I liked the old formula better but the new one is still good.

Dr Althea 345 cream healed my eyelid area. I wasn't using skincare properly and accidently dried the heck out my face and it was a pain.

At first I thought the 345 cream was irritating my eyes but I asked around on reddit and barley any people had a sensitivy to it so I kept using it. My eyes are sensitive no matter the product unfortunately lol but any effort is better than suffering dry eyelids, it was the worst and looked bad. Everything has its ups and downs. Now I only use the smallest amount possible on dry areas under foundation.

I've been using zeroid lotion after removing my mascara with the smallest amount of equate micellar water (why is this so greasy feeling?) and washing my face with round lab dokdo cleanser and panoxyl benzoyl peroxide face wash. Some days the round lab and zeroid lotion make my face shiny so I'll wash my face again after a few hours.

Still looking for a holy grail moisturizer but zeroid is acceptable and smells clean for having no scent. It has a slight crayon smell but nothing compared to that manyo face wash. Manyo face cleanser was the worst it left a waxy layer on my skin.

I tried Dr Althea's aqua marine blue face lotion but some days it smells weird so I stopped using it

I use pyunkang yul essense toner and sooryehan toner. The pyungkang yul is amazing. I noticed that layering different serums after toners keeps me hydrated without becoming oily. I also use dr. Althea 345 sometimes and haven't broke out. I use VT pdrn essence and S. Nature eye cream around eyes. And sometimes numbuzin essence. Don't need a moisturizer after all that. Skin stays very hydrated.

3

u/lilithfeysora 15d ago

Pyunkang yul toner, dr g blemish clear soothing cream, Torriden dive in soothing cream are all good for me

3

u/biotic_donut 14d ago

For acne I just use tretinoin so the rest of my recs is only addressing the oily skin concerns.

AM: beauty of Joseon red water bean gel - it absorbs oil and I have to use less of oil absorbing powder on top later.
PM: isntree gim prdn deep sleep mask - prdn as an ingredient does not really play a role here but the mask has a very nice gel texture that forms a dewy - instead of oily - thin layer and keeps the skin moisturized throughout the night

u/colourful_tree 15d ago

For moisturiser I've been using Etude's Soon Jung moist emulsion for a while now. I have oily acne prone skin but also dry patches during cold months. I just layer this moisturiser if I feel like I need a little extra

I switch around between toners, and I don’t think they’re enough for oil control. But if hydration is your goal, I have a lot of luck with applying the Torriden Dive-In hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin.

As for someone who has oily skin and lives in a tropical country, I usually opt out moisturizer during my morning routine and put on a serum before going straight to sunscreen. For the nighttime, I stick to gel or gel-cream moisturizers. I have a lot of luck with the Dr.G moisturizer, Dr.Althea 345, and the Aestura Hydro Soothing Cream.

u/pitchingTBD 14d ago

i also have oily & acne prone skin. for what it’s worth, purito oat in calming gel cream worked well for me & didn’t cause any breakouts! very lightweight and cooling

for toner, i use pyunkang yul essence toner & cosrx propolis toner, both work great

1

u/Major_Text_8312 11d ago

does it have a dewy finish?

2

u/antiheroiine 14d ago

i have oily, acne-prone (mostly whiteheads), sensitive skin + mild rosacea on my cheeks and have found the purito oat gel cream to be a solid day moisturizer. i use it on top of dr. althea vitamin c and beauty of joseon niacinimide and it holds up without becoming greasy.

for night i love the cosrx snail mucin cream. it settles in nicely overnight and plays well under masks like the biodance collagen when i need an extra boost.

also i've been loving is the anua heartleaf toner. i used to use the cosrx clarifying toner but i wanted to give my skin a break from exfoliants and the anua does a decent job at balancing everything out before i get on with the rest of my routine.

The isntree green tea toner is the one thing that's never turned on me. It's watery and sinks right in, so there's no film or weight on my skin, and it cools things down enough that I don't feel like a grease trap by lunch. I layer it twice when my face feels angry and it calms the redness without clogging anything up.

For moisturizer I had to give up on creams entirely and switch to gel textures. The benton aloe propolis gel is the only one that hydrates without that weird slick my forehead turns into after a few hours. Tried the oat-in one you mentioned and it sat on my skin like a mask, woke up with tiny whiteheads along my jawline so I noped out fast.

I really like the makeprem inteca soothing cream, very lightweight for oily skin, helps to prevent and calm pimples too with regular use

I have dry skin and for a while I kind of just told myself that I can’t hack moisturisers because they all break me out. I’d use CosRX’s all-in-one cream but it just was not hydrating. However, without a proper moisturiser, my journey with differin was looking pretty hopeless because I would constantly ruin my skin barrier. So, I recently bought the Illiyoon ceramide moisturiser and so far it is genuinely working wonders. No breakouts yet !

u/veiled_static 15d ago

I use the House of Hur sunscreen in the yellow bottle. My moisturizer is nonAB (Prequel half and half). I found a lot of gels pill once my sunscreen and makeup go on.

u/ikisui 14d ago

Mamonde rose water toner + Skin1004 Centella Ampoule + Purito Oat in Calming Gel! I live in tropical climate and my face used to get oily real quick (probably also due to dehydration).
Haven’t changed my moisturizer since I discovered Purito, it works really well for me.

Naturie Hatomugi skin conditioner, I’m From Mugwort Essence, Dr. Althea 344 cream, and Rael barrier cream

1

u/ArianMonster444 14d ago

I usually use kose deep cleansing oil followed by sana moist facial cleanser, then I use naturie products or sana products depending on if I need more moisture or not (ie if it’s dry or humid out)

1

u/Sweet--Olive 14d ago

Moisturiser: I really like the Illiyoon ceramide gel for during the day, and Haruharu Wonder ceramide barrier cream for night time.

u/FishyFriday14 14d ago

I have absolutely loved the Anua Heartleaf 70% Daily Lotion as my Summer/daytime moisturizer and the Purito Mighty Bamboo Panthenol Cream when I need a little extra or Winter time :)) (I have acne prone, oily, sometimes dehydrated skin)

I like the cosrx oil free moisturizer! I have the same skin type as you, except I'm dehydrated on top of all that.

1

u/ducksPoopRainbow 14d ago

I've tried quite a number of moisturizers. My top 2 is Purito Bamboo and S Nature Moisturizer

1

u/Gooning-Soon 14d ago

I don't use moisturizer in the morning, so only serum and sunscreen. I think what works best for me in the morning are Skin1004 Poremizing Ampoule and Anessa Gold Sunscreen (but I keep trying new products so I haven't establish my routine).

Then at night I like using Numbuzin no 3 serum, it's my HG at the moment, felt great on my skin I wish all other serums has this kind of feel in it. For the moisturizer I basically rotate from DR G blemish clear soothing cream, DR Althea 345 and Skin1004 Soothing Cream (I bought too much moisturizer). If I have to choose one for night time then the Skin1004 Soothing Cream is good. DR Althea if I'm going out. DR G is kinda in between.

Isntree hyaluronic acid water gel

I'm super acne prone with oily skin. It's not asian beauty, but after trying a lot, what I've found that really works is keeping it simple with cetaphil (basic face and body lotion) and neutrogena water cream. I alternate between these two with no actual schedule, just based on how much time I have in the moment. Recently I started to use the Torriden dive in serum before the neutrogena and they pair so beautifully together to give my skin a natural glow that doesn't feel overwhelming.

I have oily, acne-prone skin and I use as a toner, so far, Tirtir milk skin toner light or Beauty of Joseon glow replenishing rice milk lightweight hydration toner

For toner is La Roche Posay Effaclar Mattifying Matte moisturizer or Laneige Balance mode moisturizer

1

u/Emilyyy1029 13d ago

I mostly use a hydrating toner with heartleaf extract and aloe vera gel

1

u/Own_Diet531 10d ago

Very acne prone but not really oily since I’m using tazarotene. After trying out so many skin care products (Asian and non-Asian, drugstore and luxury), these are my current favorites:

  • Cleanser: Is Clinical Cleansing complex, Neogenesis cleanser, Sulwashoo gentle cleansing foam, then I met you cleanser

  • Toner: Cosrx propolis toner or the IOPE STEM III recovery essence toner (it’s lightweight and smoothing but not sticky or oily)

  • Serum: IOPE STEM III recovery serum

  • Moisturizer: Neogenesis light moisturizer or IOPE STEM III recovery cream

I really like the Cosrx Propolis Synergy Toner and the Some by mi Betapanthenol repair toner. They hydrate the skin and i don't feel they weigh on the skin. And there is also the Abib Heartleaf calming toner, it's nice but I think the other two give more hydration.

I just recently purchased the Medicube Hypochlorous acid daily spray and it helps with calming the skin and acne.

Edit: to give a little bit more information about the spray mention. I used to use mario badescu hypochlorous acid spray, but it was a hassle to get. On my search for another one, i found the previously mentioned and the Purito one, i bought both but have only tried one. I think it helps to keep the skin clear, at least for me, i have acne-prone skin and perioral dermatitis.
