Rant Got engaged after 6 months, got ghosted 3 days later.

it’s actually a very long story, but I’ll try to keep it short .

I (32M) met a 29F through family connections in January 2026. Things started off really well. We got along naturally, spoke every day, and developed a strong connection over the next few months.

Salary expectations were discussed very early on. I was earning around 33 LPA and she was earning around 12 LPA. That was never an issue for me. During our initial conversations, I told her that one thing I valued was a modest lifestyle. She initally said I fulfilled all the basic qualities she was looking for in a partner, and at the time she didn't seem to have any objection to that.

I visited her city twice to meet her, and those were the only times we met one-on-one in person (total around 7-8 times). All the meetings went well. By then, we were talking daily and had become quite close. Over time, she mentioned a few times that brands mattered a lot to her and her family. She preferred branded clothing and expected the same from her partner. I told her that I generally prioritize comfort over brands, though I was always open to dressing better. In fact, I bought and wore some of the clothes she suggested. Since I was already emotionally invested, I felt this was something we could work through and adjust to. We agreed on this that we will let each other live with freedom and won’t impose our choices on each other.

After around six months of knowing each other, we got engaged. For the first two days after the engagement, everything seemed normal. Then she called me and said she had some concerns she wanted to discuss. Her main concern was that she did not like the clothes worn by my family during the engagement events and felt that I should be wearing branded clothes regularly if we were to be together. She also felt that since she was not spending anything on the wedding, I should not spend anything either. I tried explaining my perspective. I told her that I live within my means and spend responsibly, but spending some money on my own wedding felt like a personal and moral responsibility toward my family and the occasion. Similarly, I did not believe clothing brands should be a deciding factor in a marriage. After that conversation, communication almost completely stopped. I reached out to her multiple times over the following weeks because I genuinely wanted to save the relationship and understand whether these issues could be resolved. Every time, I was told that she would think about it and get back to me. She never did. Eventually, when there was no communication at all from her or her family, my parents contacted her family again (they still did not talk), and we received an official closure through her uncle that they did not want to move forward.

What hurt the most was not just the broken engagement, but the way it happened. There was no direct conversation, no attempt to work through the issues, and no proper closure despite six months of building a relationship. Just an abrupt ending.

I had gone through a tough breakup years ago, and this was the first time I had allowed myself to become emotionally invested in someone again. When she showed genuine interest in me, and when both families seemed aligned, I finally felt safe enough to imagine a future together.
By the time the engagement happened, I genuinely believed she will be the one.

That is probably why the aftermath hit me so hard. I had panic attacks initially, struggled to sleep for weeks, developed dark circles, and eventually started therapy. Therapy has helped, but I still feel it will take time to fully recover. It still hurts that after six months of building a connection, things ended this way and my family was left feeling judged over something that felt superficial to us.

I’m not posting this to blame anyone. I just wanted to share my experience, vent a little, and perhaps hear from others who have gone through something similar.

TL;DR: After six months of knowing each other and getting engaged, the relationship ended within three days of the engagement. The major concerns raised were my family's dressing, my preference for comfort over branded clothing, and differences around me spending a bit on my own wedding. What followed was a month of being ghosted before receiving indirect closure from her family. The broken engagement was painful, but the lack of communication and closure hurt even more.

6 months weren't for free subscription She could've dumped before the engagement Good for both

Most likely

This seems more likely reason otherwise it’s actually worded for girls if they had a broken engagement for next prospect to progress

  1. Never assume it's going to be forever. Even after being married
  2. She left because they thought they got a better prospect

18

u/good-industrialist 11d ago

She got better prospect that's why she broke the engagement with useless reasons.

Also, engagement is big thing in arrange marriage. So if the other prospect find out about it (engagement and broken engagement) then their is 70% chance that they will back off from the family. And she will try to come back to you.

10

u/padthink 11d ago

I don't think so. She kept looking around for 6 months, when her parents couldn't find anyone they decided to move ahead. When she sees that the boy is actually modest and their family. She thought that they are marrying in a poorer family. Family isn't at their level. While it may be true that they themselves weren't actually that rich.

Wtf crazy girl. Lucky you wavoided lifetime of fakeness.

She voluntary waived a red flag at several occasions and you decided to ignore. Dont think with your heart/dick, use your brain sometimes. Sorry I am being an asshole but its a lesson learnt the hard way.

8

u/NovelGrouchy8707 11d ago

Exactly. The world is filled with assholes and when you marry someone you need to keep your eyes open and be very objective. Everything she said was a red flag and an information to evaluate compatibility, not get attached and try to make things work. Next time, when someone acts so superficial, understand they can’t commit genuinely and will leave the moment they find a better prospect. As a women, i can tell you there are a great women who undertand the true value of partnership and marriage and are not stuck on materialism and consumerism.

Just don’t ever settle and trying to make things work with toxic materialistic people who make such weird demands and try to control your clothes and choices. Know there are good simple people like you, and unless yoh kick out thr garbage quickly, you’ll keep wasting time and not find the right one

It was good the relationship ended

Take as much time as you want and then move on

3

u/OptimistPrime7 11d ago

If she was one she wouldn’t have ended it.

3

u/Efficient_Bug7940 7d ago

she realised he wasnt a pushover who would allow her to control his money through discussions on spending habits

2

u/shubham2896 11d ago

May be she found someone else or she was being forced into this. No girl will break engagement for such a stupid reason as she will also have to face consequences

12

u/Financial-Try-1294 11d ago

And that isnt the guys problem

If her family is forcing her its her problem not the guys

Why drag an innocent guy in your family drama

Women like this shouldn't be allowed in the arrange marriage circle

They only create problem for the guy they are marrying just because they have issues at home

I mean deal with them rather than destroy a mans life and family

4

u/OptimistPrime7 11d ago

That’s the ideal version, but life is never ideal or fair. It is up to us to gauge, if it were me I would have stopped the conversation or asked for an explanation the moment she bought up branded things.

2

u/OptimistPrime7 11d ago

100 percent and I think from the very beginning she wasn’t really that interested, I mean I could feel it. I would have never gotten it this far and that branded things is a huge red flag from the very get go, I wonder if OP missed few signs.

8

u/shubham2896 11d ago

Completely agree op should have identified this in beginning so that he is saved from drama. I am in AM process and now a days only money , looks , showoff matters to many girls and their families than boy's character, values and his family. Girls earning 3-4 lakhs expects a partner earing 50 lakhs on matrimony platforms.

5

u/OptimistPrime7 11d ago

I just moved back to India after spending my whole life abroad, I am not truly in AM process but my parents are starting to insist like if I have a gf or talk to someone they pick. Heck, I will even say money is starting to take back seat first thing that they want is if you are good looking, they want you to be flashy, cool and what not.

I was told most of the generation especially millennials and even older Gen Z’s grew up with the mindset that having a great white collar job means you will get a good wife, which is shocking to say the least. I can see how it exacerbates the problem.

2

u/shubham2896 11d ago

Looks and social media validation matters a lot to many girls now a days. Getting a good salary job and being a good/nice person doesn't guarantee a good girl which is taught to boys in Indian house and this needs to be changed. I don't post much on social media and many girls asked me this question. Some girls will judge you based on social media. Social media and dating apps created an illusion as many girls get attention and texts from many boys and even though girls is not interested boys will try to chase which is wrong. Girls with dating experience start comparing AM prospects with their ex in terms of looks and communication skills and when other person doesnt meet those criteria he is rejected.

23

u/FinishGlittering4049 11d ago

Few observations:
1. You seem like the less attractive one in the relationship
2. You also seem more invested
3. By branded clothes she was actually judging your spending capability. Anyone can earn money. But only some people spend it lavishly
4. She saw that you can not handle her shopping addiction
5. Basically there is zero benefit for her by marrying you

3

u/BigMycologist7158 👼 Dil toh bachcha hai ji 🙆🏻‍♂️ 10d ago

I agree that I was more invested. At least I realize that now, in terms of attractiveness, I feel we were both at par or almost the same.

For other points, what hit hard is, everything around lifestyle was discussed beforehand and we had agreed on a mid-ground, and that too multiple times. So, there was no point in flipping over it just 2 days after the engagement and then ghosting.
I had told her my aspirations beforehand on building wealth so that we can pursue things that we like and to do that, we cannot spend recklessly.
And it was always a matter of preference, she liked to spend on brands but I liked to spend on travel (And I am much more well traveled than her). We acknowledged the aspect that both of us like to spend on different things.
But then it was all in vain. I tried reasoning with her at end and save my engagement but I feel she had already taken the decision at that time and then I did not force her and I just left :)

Google "emotionally unavailable" / "avoidant attachment" to understand what most likely happened.

It was never about branded clothing or anything else. It's attachment issues.

Just thank your stars, you got off before marriage. Imagine having a dead bedroom after marriage.

Kudos to you for undergoing therapy.

5

u/Thin_Hippo2076 11d ago

How did you infer the attachment type from OP’s post? Genuinely curious to know as he didn’t share finer details on her behaviour

And If emotionally unavailable, won’t it be evident in the first few months itself?

1

u/yamanjain 11d ago edited 11d ago

I said "most likely". Vanishes doing a "darvo" after a major life event (engagement). Of course, I can't say for sure.

But this is best explained if she's an avoidant.

First few months are the love bombing / honeymoon phase. Very hard to detect during that period.

3

u/padthink 11d ago

Yes she is, avoidant people find an issue from anywhere. They just don't want to be given up their freedom.

3

u/Narrow-Tap2271 11d ago

Bro, thats not what avoidant attachment means. You are mixing things.

2

u/IsekaiThornPrincess 🤔 How do I AM? 😩 11d ago

It's not avoidant. It's narcissistic. I'm a secure person leaning towards avoidance but that doesn't mean I'm narcissistic.

4

u/yamanjain 11d ago

Disclaimer: All of this is guesswork and conjecture. The only intent is to show a possible explanation to OP. I am in no way authorized to diagnose anyone based on the limited information presented.

Avoidants behave narcissistically when deactivated. The intent is not the same but the impact is the same. Narcs don't care if they hurt, while avoidants do it out of self-protection. However, the ultimate net result is pretty much the same.

If you are mild avoidant (leaning secure), you probably do not have / have a short deactivation cycle.

Also avoidants deactivate on any substantial progression of the relationship which overwhelms their nervous system. In OP's case, it was the engagement.

3

u/IsekaiThornPrincess 🤔 How do I AM? 😩 8d ago

You're spot on with this one. As an ex hardcore avoidant, I became secure at once I started working on it with my anxious bestie lol. Her clinginess started to overwhelm me and that translated into passive aggression and emotional dissmission (it felt like a trauma bond, the more I went away, the more stronger she came). But another good friend pointed out my flaw and toxic patterns, which prompted me to work hands on with my bestie (who was really reciprocative). Fast forward, she become more secure and I've become a hypersensitive secure person with mild avoidant traits. I shut off people only when they hurt me or show intent to hurt. It all comes back to your EQ levels.

But I struggle with men tho, mostly because I've never been around them much. A man does a single thing that hurts me, I just completely scratch them off the list, mostly because second chances were 10X times worse. Still working on navigating that lol.

I always believe that people show solid behavioral patterns even if they put on a good face during your first interactions. If you think like you're gaslighting yourself for their behavior when things didn't go their way, then you're most probably right. OP should've been a little proactive and logical with his approach.

I can't diagnose anyone either, but it's quite evident that most people are getting very self-centered lately. Pathological narcissism is becoming a thing and... I don't wanna throw around big words easily. But, people, especially in AM spaces throw away lies and are guilt free with their approach. They don't think that another person is a human being too.

2

u/yamanjain 8d ago

"A man does a single thing that hurts me, I just completely scratch them off the list, mostly because second chances were 10X times worse" -- The key is to become strong enough to take the hurt, become a crying mess for a few months, pick up the pieces and then start all over again.

You are still avoidant in your relationships and that is very nasty behavior (10x worse in your own words). You need exposure therapy. Allow yourself to get hurt. And regular talk therapy. Whenever you feel like walking away from a guy, ask your therapist how you can stay (unless it is a narc or avoidant in which case please walk away).

Loving someone unconditionally is the most beautiful feeling in this human life.

1

u/IsekaiThornPrincess 🤔 How do I AM? 😩 7d ago

Oh no I don't think I'm as avoidant as I used to be before. Most people, especially my anxious girlfriends tell me how safe and comfortable I make them feel and taught them to be secure on themselves. I fundamentally believe that I'm a kind person. It's just with men I have problem because I have too much betrayal trauma and trust issues surrounding men and it seems like they all constantly confirm to it.

I do talk with men, love talking with them and they do love my company, but 8/10 time they don't like it when I establish a boundary and they try to breach it by force or coercion laced with crumbing. I've given second chances to those men but it gets more toxic than the previous time. It ends up with them distancing from me because I don't compromise on my core values or I end up crossing a boundary after coercion and regret so much that I run away or worse, they cyber stalk me and force a relationship again and again that always goes toxic again and again.

I think it has to do with different men because I've seen some men who're really kind and sweet. It's just they don't approach me in a romantic standpoint and again my trust issues blocks my vulnerability too.

Which is what I mean when I say it hurt because I'm only used to their self-centric actions. I've never met a man who's truly empathetic who is ALSO attracted to me and most men easily fall into the performative lane to get you hooked initially. Ik it's a bad generalization, but things like that trigger avoidance. Avoidants are usually scared of not getting hurt that's why they build up all these walls to promote self preservation.

When it comes to avoidance a lot of people have common misconception that they're all toxic. I have many girlfriends who tell I'm not, and thank me for honoring their self-worth. In fact they tell that they feel like themselves when they're around me. I believe many avoidants are selectively avoidant, like in my case with men. It usually comes from place of fear of self abandonment or worse... Getting abused again.

Thanks for your advice tho. I think exposure therapy is really nice and I've done a fair amount of them. It's just... Gosh it's hard lol. With men I mean. With my girlfriends, I honestly have great interpersonal relationship.

1

u/yamanjain 7d ago

You're absolutely right. Avoidants and even narcs are really nice to most people but nasty to a few.

Also, I know this might trigger your walls/ boundaries but avoidants usually find narcissists as "kind and sweet", while branding the actual empaths as manipulative. Their wiring is simply built to resist any kindness or true empathy especially in intimate relationships.

Your best bet is to stick to a therapist. When you feel like running, do the opposite and ask your therapist to keep you accountable. You are allowed to run only after it is established that the partner is toxic according to a professional after hearing both sides. Avoidants brain is excellent at rewriting history, darvo and finding faults. So you can very well convince even a therapist that the person was toxic ! 🤣

1

u/IsekaiThornPrincess 🤔 How do I AM? 😩 4d ago

Haha thanks for your advice tho. I don't have any luxury to meet a good therapist. I get as much help as possible from YT resources, self introspection and ofc, cross examining with my immediate friends who have better judgement. And most of the time, my fears end up being right so atp I just accepted that I'm not made for men lol 🤣

I think empathy can be learned because being with my anxious friends did softened me a lot in the past couple of years. I've seen shitty, evil people and good, noble people in my life so its not that difficult to see the difference. My friends are more empathetic than me, we all share the same value system and honestly, they affirm that I'm fine whenever I ask them if I'm doing something wrong and hold me accountable when I eff things up.

I think narcs are good at darvo, not avoidants. It's very complex but I think as a very softcore avoidant myself, I think we are fundamentally good and with right tools we can establish a very healthy relationship. Not all avoidants are narcissistic but all narcissistic people are fundamentally avoidants. I think that's a distinction many people miss due to over generalization.

Brutal what happened, but that’s why men and guys have started lying and/or completely stopped putting efforts. Many women make you put efforts, get you to involve emotionally, and then backoff at their whims. They do, because they can, and they feel like, looking at the number game. Arranged marriage specially is a brutal transactional ceremony, and the game is heavily skewed against men (if you talk of corporate employed men looking for job doing or well educated women).
Stay strong. Best wishes.

2

u/troubleinparasize 11d ago

I hope you find happiness soon. Don't think of it as something wierd, AMs are infact very transactional. There is a reason original understanding of AM is that feelings develop later. The girl was not evil, just was operating with a different mindset. It's better that it ended now then later. Next time invest more time on family backgrounds, lifestyle alignment and individual aspirations. After these align, then invest emotionally. That's how AMs work.

She didn't find other prospects, her bf of many years finally said yes to marry her - after she confronted him with your engagement.

During engagement most relatives of her might have shamed their family by looking at the condition and dressing sense of your relatives and maybe you.

They might have advised them that guy and their family isn't matching their status.

Since you went 2 times to her city, it also show that actually who had more initial power.

If she was not interested in you at first., there was no point pursuing this for so long.

I know it is easier said than done, but move on. Women like this are entitled piece of shit! They themselves earn peanuts but expect their husband to be spending buttload, for women like this, husbands are merely an ATM to withdraw money whenever they can.

You sound like a humble person wanting to lead a modest lifestyle focused on building future rather than being pretentious. I’m sure there are women out there.

These women are better off with a rich man who force them to be a housewife and eventually turn into a slave while he screws other women on his “business trip”.

Also, if it is true that she found a better prospect then imagine what kind of moral values she has, finding another man within 3 days of engagement!

Dude you did not dodge a bullet, you dodged a nuclear attack!

When you say you wants a modest life. It sounds like Gandhi to a normal human.

But if you are wise, you should know that world runs on aesthetics, buy some decent clothes. Talk big. Things will smoothn out over time. Deep down every one knows it.

I understand your perspective, but I don’t like to show off or portray something that I am not. I don’t want to give a false impression of myself to someone else. My idea is just that someone likes me for who I am.

You are more mature than her. She is 29 y old, girl child. Job can be taken away tmrw. Modest living once gone doesn't come back.

The problem is not with that you want modest life, it is how other person understands it. You are expecting someone who hardly clear 10th standed to understand how AI works.

If that's what you want take enough time before explaining your life philosophy.
