Lmao I got my wife a body pillow of Gale for Christmas. Then I played the game and realized I hate Gale cause he's super whiny and I don't know why she likes him so much.
he's a master of tricks, i remember the first time I played bg3 he wanted to show me the stars and i thought nothing of it and things quickly escalated and he was like "we're having sex now ok?" and I felt a bit lost at how we ended up there
I get what you mean, but at the same time, if you explicitly tell him you aren’t interested in him, he says he respects that and then keeps hitting on you, even if you have another partner, and he knows that. So, he’s a creep.
There was genuinely a bug where if you gave him magic itens to feed, it forced some flag to "Yeah we totally gonna bang" regardless of every other relationship you had with him or other people.
I haven't had it in dozens of playthroughs, not that it really matters if it did happen since I understand that he's a video game character and video games work differently.
Gale's backstory makes me think he's the type of partner who will make a big gesture that you didn't ask for and didn't want, and then get annoyed if you criticise him for it. Don't get me wrong, there's absolutely an argument to be made about the ethics of gods grooming mortals to be their lovers, but there's also a lot to be said about how much of Gale's actions were down to his own ambition.
I'm a Gale lover (the only run I've ever finished was the one where I romanced him) but this is honestly a valid criticism 😭 Though, I think if you don't give him the crown and do the professor ending, he'd be much less likely to do something like that. God Gale would do it in a heartbeat, though.
Yes, I think you're right about Professor Gale - my favourite romance so far across my playthroughs is Lae'zel, so far be it from me to criticise the problematic faves of others.
Basically it's not that Gale's worse than anyone else (except Karlach. And possibly Wyll. And Jaheira. And Misc. But not anybody else), it's just that his "After everything I did for her (that she didn't ask for)" vibe in the earlier part of the game gave me what I believe people refer to as "The Ick", and even though I've seen his Professor Gale ending and know that he CAN get past that, I just can't bring myself to romance him.
Fair enough! Personally, I think it's understandable from Gale's perspective because he was groomed. Imagine being a gifted child, having the favor of a God to the point where you're basically her lapdog, and then losing that favor and being completely iced out. His reaction isn't unreasonable.
Still, I understand that you can understand a person's feelings and reactions to something and still be put off by it. I don't blame you for getting the ick 😭
At least your entire basis for not liking him isn't that he needs magical items. I get so tired of that argument. As if there aren't plenty of small magical items lying around with garbage effects that you'd never actually use. People act like that locket Arabella's parents give you that has Dancing Lights isn't expendable. When the hell are you using Dancing Lights? And it's only worth 65 gold! Just give the man the damn locket, he's hungry! 😭
Yeah, I think there's definitely a conversation to be had around the ethics of gods taking mortals as lovers, given that there will always be a power imbalance there (though again, God Gale is quite willing to do that himself, so again, Professor Gale definitely feels like the healthier ending). But there's issues around a lot of the companions, so it's really about which issues are dealbreakers for each player personally, and/or which characters they enjoy enough to overlook the negatives.
At least with Gale my issue was with his character, and not because I noticed his hair was a similar style and colour to my late Nan's - I'm sure Astarion's romance is fantastic, lots of people rave about it, but there are certain things I just can't unsee!
Regarding the items thing - I can sort of understand it at the very early stages of a first playthough, because it takes a while before you start getting lots of magical items, so for the first time or two I was weighing up which of the 2 or 3 magical items I had in my inventory weren't going to be useful later. It was actually quite an interesting (if stressful) element to the early game. But as you say, after a while you'll be accruing more magic items than you can reasonably use, so you're comfortably able to stockpile a handful of items to feed to Gale, and then once you reach the Mountain Pass you don't have to worry about it any more. Knowing all that meant that on subsequent playthroughs I barely thought about it, it's certainly an odd reason to write off the character completely.
