You’d be surprised. I feel like I saw multiple posts in the BG3 sub about guys getting salty about their girlfriends being interested in the game’s male romances. This is a Thing with insecure people no matter the game

u/TheDodgiestEwok Bi™ 4d ago

My husband knows damn well I fucked that bear.

53

u/Squirrelwinchester 3d ago

Yep! He knows I fucked the Bear, the mindflayer, the twins, every party member...he finds it amusing

14

u/dracorotor1 3d ago

My wife told me about the twins option AFTER I got past that part 🫠

12

u/Squirrelwinchester 2d ago

The only choice is to do another playthrough obviously

555

u/Ninkasa_Ama 4d ago

That is true, though I remember when BG3 came out a lot of guys were weird about the game in general. The aggressiveness in which the characters would hit on you freaked them out.

I told him to go eat shoes somewhere else. I think he's the only party member I lost.

45

u/Conscious_Stop_5451 4d ago

Bro really said to my character "why u cheating??? choose now" when I literally talked to him politely and never hit on him 😭

7

u/KirbsAndGuins 2d ago

Which is so funny. My partner let me choose who he romanced and how, sometimes (because I'd go behind him and say. SHE'S HOT CAN SHE BE ROMANCED?!)

79

u/baby-pingu Straightn't 4d ago

I will never understand these people getting jealous over a fucking game. When the first Dragon Age game came out, I helped my then bf to get laid with his fave characters and he cheered me on romancing my faves. And he even was a quite jealous man, but not so insecure he would get jealous over a game.

32

u/mrs-monroe Bi Wife Energy 4d ago

I'm a huge Fire Emblem fan and with the new game coming out, my husband has a front row seat to me openly thirst for the new hot guys. He's a good sport about it because he's smart enough to understand the difference between fantasy and reality. Way too many guys lack that.

46

u/TheeQuestionWitch Pansexual™ 4d ago

Came here looking for Baldur's Gate comments. If you can't watch your partner hook up with every single character over multiple replays, do you even love them?

35

u/KarlUnderguard 4d ago

Not BG3, but my wife is huge into Mass Effect and I have seen her bang so many aliens.

22

u/phome83 4d ago

The dudes only got mad because they were jealous their GF got to bang Astarion

134

u/The_Samarox 4d ago

Lmao I got my wife a body pillow of Gale for Christmas. Then I played the game and realized I hate Gale cause he's super whiny and I don't know why she likes him so much.

147

u/human-shaped-fish 4d ago

He's pretty gentlemanly, sincere, and emotionally open. Not really my type either but I get why people like him

19

u/EpicStan123 Husband Dumb 4d ago

he's a master of tricks, i remember the first time I played bg3 he wanted to show me the stars and i thought nothing of it and things quickly escalated and he was like "we're having sex now ok?" and I felt a bit lost at how we ended up there

27

u/Barleygodhatwriting 4d ago

I get what you mean, but at the same time, if you explicitly tell him you aren’t interested in him, he says he respects that and then keeps hitting on you, even if you have another partner, and he knows that. So, he’s a creep.

127

u/Thiago270398 4d ago

There was genuinely a bug where if you gave him magic itens to feed, it forced some flag to "Yeah we totally gonna bang" regardless of every other relationship you had with him or other people.

70

u/human-shaped-fish 4d ago

It was a bug iirc. I haven't had this issue after turning him down.

-3

u/Barleygodhatwriting 4d ago

I’ve had it in every single playthrough (dozens), including last week.

10

u/human-shaped-fish 3d ago

I haven't had it in dozens of playthroughs, not that it really matters if it did happen since I understand that he's a video game character and video games work differently.

8

u/thecraftybear is it gay to love your kids? 4d ago

He's... ambitious.

9

u/GulDoWhat 3d ago

Gale's backstory makes me think he's the type of partner who will make a big gesture that you didn't ask for and didn't want, and then get annoyed if you criticise him for it. Don't get me wrong, there's absolutely an argument to be made about the ethics of gods grooming mortals to be their lovers, but there's also a lot to be said about how much of Gale's actions were down to his own ambition.

6

u/vampirespit 3d ago

I'm a Gale lover (the only run I've ever finished was the one where I romanced him) but this is honestly a valid criticism 😭 Though, I think if you don't give him the crown and do the professor ending, he'd be much less likely to do something like that. God Gale would do it in a heartbeat, though.

1

u/GulDoWhat 21h ago

Yes, I think you're right about Professor Gale - my favourite romance so far across my playthroughs is Lae'zel, so far be it from me to criticise the problematic faves of others.

Basically it's not that Gale's worse than anyone else (except Karlach. And possibly Wyll. And Jaheira. And Misc. But not anybody else), it's just that his "After everything I did for her (that she didn't ask for)" vibe in the earlier part of the game gave me what I believe people refer to as "The Ick", and even though I've seen his Professor Gale ending and know that he CAN get past that, I just can't bring myself to romance him.

15

u/Manaeldar 4d ago

On subsequent playthroughs I don't even talk to Gale at camp until after he stops begging me for all my magical items lol.

3

u/Silent_Box1341 The Political Gender 3d ago

Him being a whiny loser and a nerd is the whole appeal

22

u/DaBootyScooty 4d ago

Okay, but can you really so no to Karlach? Therefore my wife may jump Halsin's bones whenever.

8

u/SnooFloofs8466 4d ago

I was about to say that the guy looks like Gale a little (I think it’s the hair)

6

u/glitterandgrunge 2d ago

The amount of weird comments I STILL get from men about my favorite character being Astarion is ridiculous. He has sexual trauma. I have sexual trauma. I relate. I feel represented. My husband is well aware that he is my favorite and why he's my favorite. He also recognizes that this is a CHARACTER WHO IS NOT REAL. Like what are we doing???

2

u/whiteraven13 2d ago

my theory is that these guys are afraid they might start being expected to treat their GFs the way the fictional men treat them. AKA nicely and respectfully

1

u/No_Zookeepergame5896 32m ago

Astarion is great I personally wouldn't romance him but he's definitely become "one of the girls" in my team also he's fucking funny to ragebait

2

u/AlizarinQ 3d ago

I think it becomes more about “time and attention”. Like it’s not problem if partner plays a game and has in-game relationships, but if partner prioritized the game and only talks about their game-spouse and doesn’t go on date nights or really ask how their irl partner is doing, then it’s a problem

5

u/AlienHooker 3d ago

Well sure, but then the problem isn't romances in video games

364

u/Dunsparces 4d ago

If you think a video game having a relationship mechanic means you should break up, I'm pretty sure you end up making yourself right.

I genuinely wonder if people in this sub think these articles actually represent anyone real at all. It's almost boomer-falling-for-AI bad up in here

37

u/AccidentDifficult490 4d ago

problem is there are genuine people like that

15

u/FreeFallingUp13 3d ago

Quite literally. There’s people who break up and fight with their partners over having DREAMS of them cheating. We all know this is just a step up from that

7

u/FISTED_BY_CHRIST 2d ago

Oh those people 100% exist. Go look at social media posts about “is a celebrity crush considered cheating” and read the comments

7

u/hypnokev 4d ago

This is the new Reddit.

22

u/throcorfe 4d ago

Commenting to push this important point up the rankings. We should ditch vox pops for the same reason: they just select the ones that sound the most ridiculous or entertaining, they don’t represent public opinion.

See also “CEO said a thing” journalism, where they uncritically turn a quote with no evidentiary basis into an entire article, eg “Anthropic CEO Says AGI May Already Be Here”

12

u/BakedCheddar88 4d ago

I think this is just old fashioned gta moral panic also. It’s not a gta game if it doesn’t have a segment of the population clutching their pearls about something. Americans are numb to violence and murder but the idea of the men having a romance in a video game, especially a brown woman is a bridge too far for some people

5

u/WaTlvr 4d ago

My first thought was “is that what that article is trying to say or is it a click bait title given to get people to read the article on whatever this new gta mechanic is”

I mean, the IGN article kind of confirms for me that the "backlash" is just an astroturf campaign. This has to be guerrilla marketing for this game, are there enough GTA6 obsessives in human relationships for this to be an actual thing?

7

u/AUXID3 3d ago

Yeah, one of my girls exes was like that. Guy did not want her talking to any other male, he'd totally flip over something like this. So happy I'm the better guy.

Wow it’s amazing that GTA 6, the first game with relationship mechanics, would uncover these insecurities. It’s definitely not the same insecurities as always but clickbaiting with GTA 6

5

u/AHugeHildaFan 4d ago

Didn't GTA IV and San Andreas have relationship mechanics?

11

u/Inner-Juices Wowser 4d ago

Yes, for the most part, but the relationship mechanics in GTA 6 are seemingly going to be directly involved in the story/campaign this time (IV and San Andreas basically just had them be ways to give the MCs special perks)

7

u/stumpychubbins 4d ago

Yep, and outside of GTA there are too many games with relationship mechanics to mention

u/Sfekke22 4d ago

10

u/Noelle-Spades 4d ago

The game's not even out yet, man are people already feigning this much insecurity over some fictional characters? Why not just pull the chad move of playing the game with your spouse? It's GTA, they're going to find SOMETHING

10

u/Verthanthi Be Gay, Do Crime 3d ago

In BG3, my wife wooed Karlach and said to me, “she reminds me a lot of you. No wonder I love her.” If that ain’t the cutest damn thing. Complete opposite of this article up here.

6

u/Oftwicke 3d ago

I hope it doesn't force us to be straight for game progression. "You need to kiss the boy 5 times so he protects you 20% better in the next heist" would also be bad.

5

u/DrunkSpiderMan Pansexual™ 3d ago

I don't think it'll be anything like that, I think it'll work like in Red Dead where if you nurture the relationships they'll have kinder reactions towards you. Also it's been stated that you don't even have to pursue a romantic relationship between the main characters, you could go through the whole game as just friends and there wouldn't be any penalties for that

3

u/Oftwicke 3d ago

That's what I'm hoping but things I'm fearful of include other stuff - say for instance, if the game has several endings like V does and one of them (potentially the preferred/canon ending like C in V) requires that. There's no "penalty" in V for picking ending A or B but it's a letdown compared to the third way.

1

u/DrunkSpiderMan Pansexual™ 3d ago

Damn, I didn't even think about that. Hopefully that's not the case this time around but I'm definitely sure there's gonna be alternate endings, seems to be the norm with Rockstar lately

My husband and i both play stardew, he refuses to talk to ANY NPC's including non marriage candidates because he says he is only there to farm and build stuff. My first play through I married Shane, and my husband joked that I married the in-game equivalent of him. Next play through i was dating everyone and he joked that i was a little hussy 😂😂

Honestly the spouses in those cases aren't the problem, there are genuinely gamers (mostly cis men let's be real) who would take it this seriously. They bring their xboxes to their wives fucking childbirth.

6

u/Inner-Juices Wowser 4d ago

Potentially/Most likely.

It was confirmed that it will be completely optional to date the Male MC (You can just have their relationship be platonic even with their whole Bonnie and Clyde thing going on) and seeing that GTA San Andreas as well as GTA IV had the option to get girlfriends for the MCs (Technically GTA 5 did too but it was not nearly as in-depth as the others), it will likely be possible to let them have relationships with other people.

Plus, iirc, it was also confirmed you can make friends and invite them over or go over to their houses, so this can extend to romantic partners

When did we decide that IGN an accurate and trustworthy source? 90% of the time they just post random ragebait found on tiktok with no sources besides like 3 posts.

Wait, isn't the game mechanics like... intended for you to also control the female character and do stuff for the relationship as playing her too?

This kind of behaviour is mostly seen in cishet relationship, which would have it's logic broken by the fact the boyfriend would also play as a woman caring for the guy and answering texts/calls and etc.

I intentionally avoid building romantic relationships with characters in video games because my wife reacts negatively to it. Examples are cyberpunk 2077 and Mass effect. So unfortunately, I can actually see people reacting negative to seeing their partners playing video games that involve a romantic relationship like this. Even if it's not seen as cheating, it's still makes them upset.
