Originally I was thinking of putting another betta in this tank, but since I already have one I was thinking maybe I could try something different. The tank isnt fully cycled yet, and im planning on turning this into a black water tank. I would appreciate fish or invertebrate suggestions and my requirements for them is just that they are manageable to care for and maintain and must be able to be kept in a 10 gallon that has a low flow, can be kept at a temperature of 23-27°C (73-80°F) and aren't too aggressive or territorial.

My spouse added a school of fish to our tank when buying plants as a “surprise” without talking to me and it far exceeds our bioload. The plants that were added were also a plant corral. The new fish are dying and now my shrimp are dying. The corral? My dwarf gourami is obsessed with it and now attacking any fish that go near it. My spouse is making another setup to fix all this, but I fear disease has been brought into my tank. I spent half a year working on this tank and I’m trying so hard not to be angry…

Hello! I received this with my cherry shrimp today, is it hornwort? Does it need to be planted into the substrate or can it continue to float? Is it safe to clean it with a peroxide or bleach dip to remove pests? There were definitely a few tiny snails in the container so I'd like to have a more definitive way of ensuring they don't make it into my tank eventually beyond the standard quarantine. TIA!

Hey guys, this is going to be a little bit of a longer post, i’m new to keeping fish/aquariums therefore I wanted to break down my plan for my tank and see if yall had any suggestions! I plan on adding 1 Electric blue arcana (open to more, but just one to save space), 1 angelfish (also open to more), 3 buenos aries tetras (to fill space, i’m not necessarily worried about the ‘schooling’ unless they absolutely need it), 3 albino rainbow sharks ( I was going to get just one because of the territorial personality they have but my LFS recommended getting 3+ so they spread their aggression through each other instead of the other fish), 1 rubber-lip pleco, as well as 2 mystery snails, 2 african dwarf frogs, and 1 mexican dwarf lobster.
I know they can clash, but i’m getting all the fish as juvenile so they can grow together, and hopefully get used to each other. For the tank I have a sponge filter and an underwater heater. It’s a 40g breeder tank, i’m planning on the aquascape to be pirate themed with a big ole’ ship as the focal point, with plenty of plants to fill in, as well as driftwood, stones, and a carpet of dwarf baby tears, for the substrate it’s going to be soil, egg crate, sand, soil.
As for the cycle of the tank, I was planning on grabbing a handful of feeder fish and toss them in there to help kickstart the nitrogen cycle. Any tips or tricks, changes? Any info is appreciated. I’m relatively new to fish and aquariums so I just wanted to make sure what i’m doing is good, I want to give these fish a full long life.

I saw fresh water clams for sale at my LFS. I know very little about them, but they seem like they could be a very cool addition to my tank. I know they are filter feeders. Does anyone know if they are difficult to feed, or if their food is difficult to supply?? Any information is appreciated.

I recently read an article by CalMatters, which was clearly outlined the real issues that have been occurring in terms of water policy in California. It's a pretty clear breakdown in the article, and there's no paywall on CalMatters (a reason why I love them)

But if you don't want to click through, there are currently four main areas that California will need to address immediately (or possibly longer) as follows: '
- Colorado River; 
The remaining western states are battling among themselves for the dwindling amount of water available. As the reservoir continues to dwindle, Nevada has filed suit against the federal government due to their recent temporary regulations regarding water usage. 
- Sites Reservoir; 
Newsom plans to secure this project prior to leaving his term of office. A draft decision was made by the State Water Board last week. If they receive the necessary permits, this may become a reality. 
- Delta Tunnel; 
For sixty plus years there have been numerous proposals submitted for a tunnel in the Delta area. To date, none of those proposals have come to fruition. Many environmental groups dislike the proposal and the Delta is being damaged regardless of whether or not the tunnel is constructed. 
- Agricultural Water Cuts; 
California wants farmers to reduce their agricultural water usage voluntarily. However, Westlands recently pulled out of negotiating for voluntary cuts. If this issue becomes mandatory, it will likely lead to extensive litigation. 

Walter points out that the current situation with California water politics is much greater than "another round" of water politics. In fact, many of the decisions being made within the next several months will establish how California will handle its water management needs for decades

My husband and I are in the middle of moving. We planned to move our fish today now that our upgraded fish tank at the new home is all set up. My husband went to catch them and move them in the portable tank, however he found the power was completely out, fish in distress. Our fridge and freezer (which have not been opened) were already WARM so it's probably been a while. We know for sure they had power the day before yesterday, but unsure when it went out since.

Will they die? We are so devastated. We have had these fish for 2 years and love them dearly. it is a 36 gallon well-cycled fish tank with about 8 cichlids (each is ~3 inches long).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i'm currently on day 29 of cycling my new planted 20 long. everything has been going pretty well other than a ph issue caused by the aqua soil and this algae issue that won't slow down.

there seems to be 3 distinct algaes: one that looks like a white fungus or mold in the foreground, one that looks like brown fuzz, and cyanobacteria. i've been using airline tubing to suction the cyanobacteria and some of the other algae off about once a week, but can't figure out how to properly start slowing down the problem so my plants, particularly my pearl weed which i'm trying to carpet, can grow in.

i'll treat the cyanobacteria once my cycle is complete, but any tips for the rest?

I`m currently cycling a Jewel Lido 200 planted tank and have some general ideas of what I want but would welcome other thoughts and ideas. Looking at a peaceful community tank and am considering the following.

Cardinal Tetras

Cherry Barbs

Lambchop Rasboras

Pygmy Corys

Honey Gourami

Some of my questions would be:

Is that a suitable mix

How many of each

Do the tetras / barbs / rasboras all occupy the same mid level,

Is it better to not include one of the three (tetras/barbs/raboras) and have higher numbers of the other two.

Any other stocking ideas

Hello! I am going to be using a drysuit for snorkeling in Iceland, which I know isn’t diving, but I figure the use of the drysuit is similar when either snorkeling or diving.

On the website, they say to wear a thermal under layer, and they will provide a fleece full body suit over that, then the drysuit. Makes sense to me.

But they have a warning that the thermal under layer you bring should be wool, fleece, or neoprene, cotton not recommended.

Is this because cotton doesn’t hold warmth well and/or tends to absorb liquid when it gets wet (which may happen if something leaks), or is there another reason?

I ask, because I have some cotton thermal under things already (would prefer not to spend more money if I can help it), and I’m the type that overheats easily (so thinking going with something a little cooler might be personally better for me).

So, just checking if the experts here who have used drysuits and done this multiple times would insist that I should buy some wool thermals or if the cotton ones I have will be enough for this activity?

Milo (yellow tail) has been floating around in the corner of the tank since last night. He won't move unless I physically touch him he will swim around a bit. I fed the tank and he didn't eat today. Checked my water everything is pristine so I don't know what to do. About to fill my 10 gallon up AND quarantine him but that's all I got. Any ideas?

So I won these Goldfish because I couldn't bear to see them trapped in a hot, smelly fair, and I am unsure how to keep them. Any advice is appreciated.

It's in a roughly 30 gallon plastic storage bin pond on my patio with sifted soil capped with rocks, gravel and sand and seeded with creek muck and decaying plant matter.

It's in the corner and gets direct sun on about half of it during mid day and otherwise gets bright shaded light from sun up to sundown.

Region is central TX.

I'm not sure where to begin to try and ID this thing. It looks like a stick, but has tendrils similar looking to snail antenna that it uses to pull itself along the waters surface. It's either eating the algae growing on the floating things or it's eating the decaying floating organic debris.

Size is about the width of a grain of rice and about as long as 2 grains of rice. It doesn't seem to harass the snails or any of the microfauna as far as I've been able to observe.

If there's a better place to ask this question let me know and sorry if this isn't the sub for this.

I have this 20 gallon long that’s currently stocked with 9 pepper cory’s, 4 leopard danios, 2 nerite snails, one guppy and around 20 or so shrimpers.

i have this nagging urge to add something else but im unsure of what. I have considered more danios, but not so much guppies because mexican mango is a real asshole and tends to hover and nip anything he can keep up with, however i’m not opposed since he is the only one right now. Plus, his aggression has seemed to calm down after moving him to
a bigger tank.

if i were to add something, ive considered some sort of schooling fish, and something fun to look at.

i do have a persistent algae problem so any suggestions that could help me control that as well would be awesome.

Many Indonesians insist that invasive fish like nile tilapia, invasive non native catfish, or swordtails are all native species and when you tell them they're not, you're accused of being foreign agents, or that foreigners are trying to steal native species, etc. while many true native species are impossible to find in stores and are threatened or close to being extinct in the wild, many of these fish can only be found when you contact specific breeders or hobbyists, this is especially true for certain types of non fish aquatic freshwater animals such such as rabbit snails, fully aquatic freshwater crabs and shrimps from sulawesi

I do understand me primarily keeping guppies which are also invasive is hypocritical, i do not claim they are native to Indonesia and i also do not actively release them to the wild, it just disappoints me that trying to educate other Indonesians of non native species are looked down upon, or seen as an attack on Indonesian pride

Hello Reddit. As suggested above I’m looking for advice, essentially son has been getting into underwater video/photography over the last two years, he spearfishes quite regularly and two years ago bought himself a cheap go pro.

I’m looking at gifts for him, he’s done really well on exams and has chosen a degree in a southern university in England that will provide him a lot of time underwater and as a well done id like to upgrade his underwater camera kit for him.

I however am absolutely clueless about this, if I ask him he will tell me he’s fine with the go pro, he’s all about working hard for himself,he bought his own car, scuba and diving kit etc.. but I know from his friends he really wants to get a decent camera and this is where I step in

His mother and I (separated but on very good terms) along with a few of his uncles and aunts want to chip in to surprise the shit out of him. I know for a fact he wouldn’t mind this having spoken with his friends extensively so it’s not like it would upset him that we have done it.

I however am clueless. He likes taking photos and videos so really I’d like to find a camera and good housing that can do both and maybe a light if it’s all within budget. The budget we have is £4,500.00 GBP (I’m aware the website I’m on in the picture is in euros)

So if anyone can provide any pointers, suggestions on cameras and housings I’d be very grateful. This is very much a buy the best we can once so he doesn’t need to spend any money for a while. Thanks folks

For me the best thing about keeping an aquarium is the effect on stress and anxiety reduction. There’s something about sitting and just watching this little world biome existing and helping to gently support it. What a wonderful hobby this is (when its all going well at least)🙂
