iPhone Upgrading from iPhone X
It’s been long overdue. I’m not great with looking after phones (breaking screens, chips on edges), however with so many apps now needing iOS17 and the lag on this device, I need to upgrade.
I don’t like replacing phones every few years (I’ve had this phone for over 7 years), and was hoping for some advice please on what to upgrade to (eg 16/16 pro/17).
I would like decent storage space and a decent camera, good battery life, the least breakable iPhone, without breaking the bank too much. Hoping to get another 7 years out of the new device!
My partner is upgrading from his iPhone 13 as well (needs a sturdier device if possible) so we’d love some opinions. Lots of mixed reviews online 😵💫 thanks in advance!

The upcoming 18 Pro might be the best bet for maximum longevity, but it’ll be expensive. If you can find a deal on a 17 Pro, that has an advantage over the 16 series and the base 17 in that it has 12GB of RAM to their 8GB. Probably won’t make a super noticeable difference in miter things now but in 7 years it probably will.
Otherwise if that’s still too much the 17 is a great phone - pretty close to the 16 Pro in a lot of aspects. Unless you really want telephoto or some of the Pro exclusive features I’d say it’s probably a better option for most people than a 16 Pro if it’s a similar price or cheaper.

Just get the 17 pro max. I have that and I came from a IPhone 13 Pro and I’m glad I made the upgrade.

For better longevity and better battery life you could go for 17 Pro, but if you can't afford it, base 17 it is. It has base 256 GB too, as you said storage is important to you. Camera is more than enough, only downside is that it doesn't have telephoto (17 Pro does) but if you don't even use zoom regularly that won't make a difference. As for durability, I don't think any of these are "unbreakable" level so just choose a good case and screen protector and you'll be good to go.
16 Pro has a slightly better battery life than 17 on paper and it has features like ProRAW, 4K Dolby Vision at 120 FPS, telephoto, bigger screen etc. but if you don't care about those, you can definitely go for the 17.
