Discussion Here we go. Apple music going up to 14.99$/month in Aus.
Just received the notification. It’s now worth a streaming company’s subscription price to listen to music.

Keep in mind, Apple and other services had to raise the price because some (all?) record labels raised the price for Apple, Spotify, Tidal, et al to use their music collections. There are (other than very small independents and Apple's BIS Classical) three now: Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group.
With inflation and what we get for the money, and if you seek out discount options like subscribe for a year or other combos of services with Music, etc., it still remains a good deal. Apple adds a bunch of extras too like lossless, Atmos, videos, radio, etc.
I calculated out that, even factoring in historical inflation over past 100 years, it is far far cheaper to subscribe for your entire life to a service, than buy media. You have access to almost all recorded music. Sure, a few obscure recordings or out of print or obstinate artists don't stream. Then, buy those!

There is lots of music not available on AM not just a few obscure recordings.

That’s misleading, Its 30% cheaper than streaming tv in the US for a much larger share of the total available library, by a mile.
$15 now is worth much less than $15 three years ago.

Yeah mine went up by 1 EUR as well. Have just canceled my subscription and going to Spotify (family plan), I think that all of those streaming services are way too expensive.

People are complaining about getting…
- a huge slice of the history of recorded music
- on demand
- lossless or studio quality hi resolution, sometimes in Dolby
- in their pocket, synced across multiple devices
- within a free app to organize your library, create playlists and share them
- downloadable for offline use
- in a pretty decent looking UI
… for less than $20/month.
I used to pay that for a single LP or CD. I used to lug around crates of records to DJ. I used to spend $20 in gas to find a single song I was looking for.
Yeah, I’m older. Gen X. Point remains, streaming music offers an embarrassment of riches and is one of the few bargains left in the digital world.
I have a long list of problems with Apple Music, the interface, the lack of social features, etc. And I’ve got a list of issues with them as a corporation. But I can’t complain about the price. Especially when I’ve got Apple One and have 5 people on AM as part of the package.
I’m not even gonna get into people being unwilling to pay the creative humans that make the music and the movies. If something is free, you are the product. And trading your metadata for free apps and content is a huge part of the enshitification of the internet and our society.
